Hildesheim ist die Stadt, die dem Besucher in kultureller,
historischer und wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht vieles zu bieten hat.
Der Historische Marktplatz mit dem berühmten Knochenhauer-Amtshaus
bildet das lebendige Zentrum der Innenstadt
und wurde von Wilhelm von Humboldt einst als „der schönste
Marktplatz der Welt“ bezeichnet. Das Ensemble der Fachwerkhäuser
und gemütlichen Cafés und Restaurants schafft
eine einzigartige Atmosphäre und lädt zum Verweilen ein.
Besonders berühmt ist die Stadt auch für ihre Kirchen und
Kulturdenkmale. Der Dom, an dem der sagenumwobene
1.000-jährige Rosenstock rankt, und die St. Michaeliskirche
gehören seit 1985 als Meisterwerke kirchlicher Baukunst zum
Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO und ihre Kunstschätze sind weltbekannt.
Auch St. Godehard und die anderen romanischen
Kirchen sind beeindruckende Zeugnisse der Stadtgeschichte.
Die Hildesheimer Museen beherbergen Kunstschätze von
Weltrang. Das Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum lockt mit seinen
bedeutenden Altägypten- und Alt-Peru-Sammlungen und
der Ausstellung zur Entwicklung der Erde. Regelmäßig finden
spektakuläre Sonderausstellungen statt. Im Knochenhauer-
Amtshaus befindet sich das Stadtmuseum Hildesheim, das
die lange Geschichte der Stadt dokumentiert. Das Dom-
Museum zeigt Schätze von hohem Wert wie den Domschatz
mit dem Marienreliquiar Ludwigs des Frommen.

Amtshaus is the vibrant heart
of the city centre and was
once described by Wilhelm
von Humboldt as ‘the most
beautiful Market Square in
the world’. The ensemble of
quaint halftimbered houses
and inviting cafés and restaurants
creates an irresistible
atmosphere – an invitation to
relax and wind down. The city
is also particularly famous for
its churches and monuments.
The cathedral, whose garden
includes the legendary
1000-year-old rose bush, and
the St. Michaelis Church are
recognised masterpieces of
ecclesiastical architecture
containing world famous artistic
treasures. They rightly
joined the ranks of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites in 1985.
St. Godehard Church and the other Romanesque churches are
also impressive reminders of the city’s proud and long history.
The museums in Hildesheim house first-class artistic treasures.
The Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum has major ancient Egyptian
and ancient Peruvian collections, as well as an exhibition on
the earth’s geological history. Spectacular special exhibitions
take place at regular intervals. The Knochenhauer-Amtshaus
houses the Hildesheim City Museum which tells the story of the
city’s long history. The Cathedral Museum displays invaluable
treasures including the cathedral hoard with the Marian reliquary
of Kaiser Ludwig the Pious.
