Die historische Altstadt und
der Rattenfänger ziehen
Touristen wie Magneten an
Hameln (60.000 Einwohner) ist das wirtschaftliche, kulturelle
und touristische Zentrum des Weserberglandes. Durch die
Rattenfängersage wurde Hameln weltbekannt. Ihren Reichtum
erwirtschaftete die Stadt allerdings als verkehrsgünstiger
Handelsplatz an der Weser. Diese wirtschaftliche Blüte ließ
prachtvoll verzierte Häuser entstehen, die wohlhabende Kaufleute
errichteten, um ihren Reichtum zu bezeugen. So konnte
sich Hameln zu einem Juwel der Weserrenaissance entwickeln.
Über viele Jahre wurde die Altstadt vorbildlich saniert und ist
so zu einem großartigen Baudenkmal von internationalem
Rang geworden, das als besonders sehenswert gilt. Dicht
aneinander gereiht lassen sich hier Gebäude im Baustil der
Weser renaissance bewundern, wie z. B. das Rattenfängerhaus
von 1602 mit der Inschrift vom Kinderauszug, das Dempterhaus
von 1607 und das Leisthaus von 1558 sowie zwei
mittelalter liche Stadttürme mit Stadtmauer. Das gesamte
Zen trum der Stadt wirkt mit seinen reich verzierten, farbenprächtigen
Bürger häusern wie ein einziges großes Freilichtmuseum,
ist aber auch zugleich der lebendige Mittelpunkt der Stadt
geblieben.

The Pied Piper of Hameln and the historic Old
Town are huge tourist attractions
Hameln (60,000 inhabitants) is the commercial, cultural and touristic centre of the Weserbergland,
the beautiful hilly region flanking the broad Weser river. The story of the Pied Piper has
made Hameln world famous and a major tourist attraction. The city’s historic wealth however
came from its favourable transport and trading location on the navigable Weser river. The economic
heydays endowed the city with numerous richly decorated houses built by wealthy
merchants to advertise their prosperity and standing. This largesse enabled Hameln to develop
into the pearl of the Weser Renaissance. The Old Town has undergone an exemplary renovation
programme since 1968 to become an impressive historic showcase of international architectural
importance and a major tourist attraction. Each with a different face, the picturesque buildings
stand shoulder to shoulder, proudly documenting the decorative hallmarks of the opulent Weser
Renaissance style. The buildings include the Pied Piper House (Rattenfängerhaus) built in 1602,
with an inscription recording the legendary exodus of the children; the Demter House built in
1607, the Leist House built in 1558, as well as two Medieval towers in the city wall. The whole
centre of the town with its richly embellished and colourful
town houses looks like a huge open air museum. But no dusty
atmosphere here – the whole Old Town is still the most lively
and vibrant part of the city, and the heart and soul of Hameln.
