GEAR GUIDE 2012 Pack Chart We’ve LISTED manufacturers alphabetically, with models sorted by capacity, then by price. Listed products The charts include 2012 models, with notes on many that we’ve tested. Complete, searchable listings for the entire product lines of all manufacturers here can be found at backpacker.com/gearfinder. Capacity One person’s weekend pack may be another’s weeklong model. Manufacturers use both cubic inches and liters to measure volume (1 liter equals 61 cubic inches). Less than 2,500 cubic inches (40 liters) Find daypacks in this range. The biggest models are great for winter or mountain outings, or even ultralight overnights in warm weather. 2,500 to 3,999 cubic inches (40-64 liters) You’ll find this size ideal for three-season weekend trips. It’ll hold your essentials, clothes, and provisions for a couple of days. 4,000 to 5,999 cubic inches (65-98 liters) If you own only one pack, this is your size, suitable for a winter weekend or for a week or more on the trail the rest of the year. 6,000-plus cubic inches (99-plus liters) These monster packs are best for multiweek treks or gear-intensive winter outings. They’ll tame big-trip loads and are also useful for strong parents who plan to carry most of a family’s load. Frame Type External frame (E) The name “external” comes from the rigid metal or molded plastic frame attached to the outside of the packbag. Advantages include superior ventilation and a more natural upright walking stance.

for the entire product lines of all manufacturers here can be found at backpacker.com/gearfinder.
Capacity
One person’s weekend pack may be another’s weeklong model. Manufacturers use both cubic inches
and liters to measure volume (1 liter equals 61 cubic inches).
Less than 2,500 cubic inches (40 liters)
Find daypacks in this range. The biggest models are great for winter or mountain outings, or even ultralight
overnights in warm weather.
2,500 to 3,999 cubic inches (40-64 liters)
You’ll find this size ideal for three-season weekend trips. It’ll hold your essentials, clothes, and provisions
for a couple of days.
4,000 to 5,999 cubic inches (65-98 liters)
If you own only one pack, this is your size, suitable for a winter weekend or for a week or more on the trail
the rest of the year.
6,000-plus cubic inches (99-plus liters)
These monster packs are best for multiweek treks or gear-intensive winter outings. They’ll tame big-trip
loads and are also useful for strong parents who plan to carry most of a family’s load.
Frame Type
External frame (E) The name “external” comes from the rigid metal or molded plastic frame attached to
the outside of the packbag. Advantages include superior ventilation and a more natural upright walking
stance.

Internal frame (I) An internal frame keeps the load closer to your back, which generally makes the pack
more stable and better balanced in difficult terrain. Many new models have much improved ventilation
with “trampoline-style” backpanels that allow greater airflow.
Rucksack (R) A packbag with shoulder straps and sometimes a hipbelt; the frameless rucksack is a
light pack best suited to light loads.
Features
Adjustable torso length (AT) To fit a variety of torso lengths, some packs feature shoulder straps and/or a
hipbelt that move up and down. In most cases, the adjustable components create a less stable ride than
you’d find on a well-fitting fixed-suspension pack because adjustable straps aren’t locked into the frame
as securely.
Divider between main and sleeping bag compartments (DI) Bigger packs often offer a fabric shelf near the bottom
of the pack. Your sleeping bag stuffs below the shelf; an outside zipper provides access.
Daypack conversion (DP) A removable lid or front pocket often converts into a fanny pack or small daypack.
Hydration sleeve (HS) A port or sleeve is built into the pack for reservoir storage.
Hydration reservoir included (HY) The pack has a sleeve, port, and reservoir included.
Interchangeable suspension parts (IS) The harness system (shoulder straps and/or hipbelt) comes in various
sizes.
Shovel or shove-it pocket (SI) Originally designed to hold a snow shovel on the outside of a pack, this convenient,
open-top panel allows easy storage for bulky items.
Spindrift collar (SP) This lets you overstuff the main compartment.
Water-bottle holster (WB) A pocket designed to hold a water bottle (typically liter-size) close at hand, and
allows you to take a drink without removing your pack.
Women’s components (WC) Hipbelts and/or shoulder straps designed for women can be exchanged for
the standard-issue unisex components. Packs marked with f are women’s specific or available in a
women’s model.

“The pack’s slim design was essential when down climbing rotten, sketchy rock, where you need to be certain that your bag won’t
catch on anything and knock you to your death,” wrote one tester on return from an adventure in Tibet. “The load never shifted even
when it was fully loaded with 60-plus pounds, scrambling up a bouldery, slippery stream bed while ducking and twisting through tree
limbs.” he said.
In 2010, this pack won our attention as a “killer deal.” We still love its eye-popping price, especially our tester who carried it on
Alaska’s North Slope with a burly 55-pound load. She loved its “quick shrink” option for lighter loads and great stability when packed
to the gills.
One of our testers used this minimalist pack hiking and climbing in Castleton Valley. He liked the streamlined daypack for a water
bladder, camera, energy bars, and keys, but wished for room for extra clothes. It’s a handy summit pack (on warm, reliable days)
with a long bungee that’s nice for attaching a camera.
For those who prefer a straight-no-chaser approach to hauling gear, the Trio Pro 50+ delivers. The pack is essentially a sturdily constructed
haul bag with immense capacity (everything you need including the kitchen sink) with just the right extras like trekking pole
carriers, and an internal water reservoir pouch. Add in a lightly padded waistbelt and shoulder straps and even monster loads are
balanced and comfortable on dicey ridges and arêtes.
Uli Steck Project 45
For summit bids and ultra-light overnights, the Uli Steck Project satisfied even our most dedicated gram-pinching testers. A lightly
padded suspension transfers loads of up to 40 pounds. Shave off 8 ounces with a removable pad, framesheet, and hipbelt. A drybag
roll top closure negates the need for a lid.
This small but richly featured ski pack is the ideal capacity for shovel, probe, lunch, and a layer. In snowless months it works great
for longer mountain bike rides (bladder not included). Bonus: Our Tahoe-based tester credited the removable ultra-thin rain shield for
keeping his iPhone, camera, and GPS dry on a wet, early season skinning session in the Sierra Nevada.
A classic case of how a hydration pack can double nicely as a daypack. The main compartment houses the easy-to-fill wide mouth
reservoir with an extra long hose that’s fronted by a large enough space for carrying a lot of gear. Add in an outside zippered valuables
storage pocket, mesh “Airspace” backpanel with superb breathability, and beefy foam hip blocks and this pack works for dayhikes
and epic trail runs.
“This daypack has exceptional suspension and comfort,” said one tester who hiked in the Indian Canyons in triple digit weather. He
credited his post-hike dry back to a moisture wicking, padded backpanel and raved that the low-profile packbag was perfect for
tight squeezes. “I loved it as an overnight pack for low-volume loads,” he said, but wished that the top “pull over” pocket allowed for
expanded capacity.
The perfect trifecta: great price, enough pockets for organizers, and room for an ultralight long weekend. The top loader has a
removable lid with zippered pouch, three zippered exterior pockets, a stuff-it pouch that doubles as compression straps, and a long
front zipper that reveals contents from top to bottom. Testers applauded the pack’s organization, but felt the stuffed-mattress hipbelt
was overkill.
This top performer got top marks as a go-to daypack for hiking and climbing. After 100 miles on the trail, one Yosemite tester
called the streamlined, top-loading pack the best-fitting she’d worn in years. “The hipbelt wrapped snugly around my hips with no
hotspots,” she attested, adding that even loads of 25 pounds felt “really stable.” Caution: Mesh water bottle holders developed small
holes from brushing rocks and trees.
Roomy enough for an ultralight weekend, the pack has a sleeping bag sleeve that unzips to reveal a cavernous main compartment,
just in case you’re tasked with carrying the bear canister. The porous lumbar pad and shoulder straps wick sweat, and an easy-tooperate
velcro swathe makes torso adjustments from 18 to 22.5 inches a snap.
