m a t u r i n g , w i t h low y i e l d p o t e n t i a l . T o
e l i m i n a t e these s h o r t c o m i n g s , an attempt
was made at JNKW, J a b a l p u r , I n d i a , d u r i n g
1971-1972 to i s o l a t e a d e s i r e d mutant from
r a d i a t i o n t r e a t m e n t . The mutant recovered
had much b i g g e r pods, l a r g e r f l o w e r s ,
and l a r g e r seeds as compared to t h e normal
d i p l o i d , T - 2 1 . The m u t a n t , besides m a t u ­
r i n g e a r l i e r , gave h i g h e r y i e l d s t h a n T - 2 1 .

Using marker p l a n t s , the degree o f o u t ­
c r o s s i n g was measured in a pigeonpea popul
a t i o n . O u t c r o s s i n g was l i k e l y t o occur
w i t h a 3% p r o b a b i l i t y beyond 43 ft (13 m);
seeds h a r v e s t e d from w i t h i n t h i s d i s t a n c e
should conform t o s t a n d a r d p u r i t y r e q u i r e ­
ments. I t was recommended t h a t i n a d j a c e n t
p l o t s of two c u l t i v a r s , 27 ft ( 8 . 2 m) of
guard rows i n each a d j o i n i n g p l o t would
p r o v i d e a n adequate b a r r i e r .

The present area under t o g a r i (Cajanus
indicus) needs to be t r i p l e d or t h e y i e l d
r a i s e d by 300%, to meet t h e requirement of
pulses of t h e s t a t e . Pusa s e l e c t i o n s have
g i v e n h i g h y i e l d s . T-51 has g i v e n the
h i g h e s t y i e l d of 800 l b s per acre (896 k g /
h a ) ; T-41 and T-16 come next w i t h y i e l d s of
666 and 533 l b s per acre (745 and 597 k g /
h a ) , r e s p e c t i v e l y . The o t h e r types T - 8 0 ,
T - 8 2 , and T-50 have a l s o been t e s t e d . Some
of these produce heavy tonnage of green
m a t t e r and a r e w e l l s u i t e d as green manures,
e s p e c i a l l y where the sannhemp crop is b a d l y
a t t a c k e d by m o t h .

Cajanus cajan Kanke-9, d e r i v e d from a cross
between BR-60 and p e r e n n i a l C. c a j a n , is a
s e m i e r e c t , medium-maturing, h i g h - y i e l d i n g
v a r i e t y o f good cooking q u a l i t y . I t i s
r e s i s t a n t to Fusarium udum. Kanke-3 is a
s e l e c t i o n from a cross between BR-183 and
p e r e n n i a l C. c a j a n and has a bushy, s p r e a d ­
i n g h a b i t . I t matures s l i g h t l y e a r l i e r
than Kanke-9 and is of go d c o o k i n g q u a l ­
i t y . I t i s h i g h - y i e l d i n g and m o d e r a t e l y
r e s i s t a n t to F. udum and f r o s t .
