Survey of pigeonpea f i e l d s around Pusa
showed 15% i n f e c t i o n by Fusarium w i l t .
Some w i l t is a l s o caused by Rhozoctonia
s o l a n i , i n o c u l a t i o n w i t h w h i c h gave about
80% p o s i t i v e r e s u l t s .

C r o s s - i n o c u l a t i o n experiments showed t h a t
the s t r a i n s of Fusarium vasinfectum c a u s i n g
w i l t s of sunnhemp and pigeonpea were s i m i ­
l a r , s i n c e c r o s s - i n f e c t i o n c o u l d b e caused.
The c o t t o n s t r a i n w i l l n o t i n f e c t these
c r o p s , nor w i l l t h e i r s t r a i n s i n f e c t c o t t o n .
Fungus o f t e n c a r r i e d o n seed. Minor w i l t ­
i n g f u n g i are Rhizoctonia s o l a n i and
Neocosmospora vasinfecta.

Fusarium udum B u t l e r , w h i c h causes w i l t of
pigeonpea, forms abundant spore masses on
t h e s u r f a c e o f i n f e c t e d p l a n t s . I t was
found t h a t t h e spore masses occur o n l y on
branches of i n f e c t e d p l a n t s at a p o i n t
c o n s i d e r a b l y below t h a t which the fungus
has reached i n t h e t i s s u e , and i t i s c o n ­
c l u d e d t h a t t h e spore masses do n o t form as
a r e s u l t o f p r i m a r y i n f e c t i o n i n t h e a e r i a l
p a r t s , b u t a r i s e a s a r e s u l t o f t h e outward
spread o f t h e fungus from i n t e r n a l l y i n f e c ­
t e d b r a n c h e s . The fungus was never found
t o b e c a r r i e d w i t h i n the seeds.
