SUMMER CAMP GUIDE 2014
Dear Friends and Families,
Can you believe it’s time to think summer? Get the girl in your
life excited about Girl Scout camp! Personally, I can’t wait to
welcome girls to a new season of camp fun and activities.
Last year, thousands of girls had the adventure of a lifetime.
With four resident camps, nine day camps and two family
camps, we offer something for every type of outdoor
adventurer. Sailing and swimming, horseback riding and
hiking, challenge courses and creative arts—you can find a
program to suit any interest among the hundreds featured in
this guide.
Girls and parents who make Girl Scout camp their camp of
choice find themselves saying things like:
• “What I liked most about my counselors at camp was
that they never gave up on you and were super nice!”
• “My daughter is afraid of heights. Her biggest
accomplishment and proudest moment of camp
was when she climbed up and did the zip line. She
loved it!”
• “My daughter was excited to make new friends
and, for a shy seven-year-old, this was a fantastic
opportunity. She had a great experience her first two
weeks and can’t wait to go back.”
Don’t miss out on the fun! According to Boston Parents
Paper, Girl Scout camps are a top “Family Favorite” summer
experience. We can’t wait for you to join us and make summer
2014 the most memorable yet.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts’ camp programs offer girls opportunities to explore their personal
interests, creativity and the environment under the guidance of caring, trained adults. Imagine a summer full
of visual and performing arts, sailing and swimming, hiking and biking, technology and much more!
From white sands to green hills, Girl Scout camp is a place where girls can spend the summer discovering the
wonders of the great outdoors. Register anytime at hercamp.org. Prior Girl Scout or troop membership is not
required. We can’t wait for you to join us! See our property map on page 6 for locations.
CAMP BUDDIES
A camper may request one “buddy” per session. Both buddies must
register for the same camp, program and session, and must list each
other’s name on the registration forms. The camp director has final
say on camp placement.
CAMP LIVING
Campers are placed in groups of 5 to 30 girls, with 2 to 5 staff per
group. At resident camp, girls stay either in cabins (6–12 girls),
yurts (6 girls), tent-a-los (5 girls) or platform tents (4–6 girls). All
cabins, tents and yurts are supplied with cots/beds and mattresses.
The program, number of girls, and camper’s age determine the
living arrangements. Each unit has shelter for rainy day activities,
bathroom facilities and storage.
PROGRAM CANCELLATION
If a program is cancelled for lack of registrations, every effort will
be made to place each girl in a similar program. Camp sessions will
be held regardless of weather, but the program may be modified in
extreme weather conditions.
CAMP PRESENTATION VISITS
Camp staff are available to give presentations about camp at
local events. Our staff will bring camp activities and songs, and
answer questions from parents and girls. Registration materials and
updated program information will be available. To schedule a visit,
contact camp@girlscoutseasternmass.org.
EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT
Each camper who registers for a 2014 Summer Camp program and
enters the promo code EB2014 before April 1, 2014, will receive $25
off their total summer camp fee. This discount does not apply to
Day Camp Assistant, April Vacation Journey or Family Camping
programs. The promo code must be entered during the registration
process and expires on April 1, 2014 at 11:59 PM.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of every camper.
Our camps follow all safety and risk management guidelines set by Girl
Scouts of the USA, the local, state and federal boards of health, and
the American Camp Association (ACA), a national camp organization
that sets high standards for both the health and safety of campers and
staff, and the delivery of quality programs. All camps in Massachusetts
must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department
of Public Health (105 CMR 430.000). New Hampshire camps are in
compliance with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental
Services Rules (Part Env-WS 1120.00). In addition, the board of health
in the town in which the camp is located licenses each camp. All our
camps are ACA certified.
HEALTH INFORMATION
A health care supervisor (HCS) staffs the camp health center and
a health care consultant (local physician) is on call. All campers are
required to have a physical examination within 12 months prior to
arriving at camp. All health forms must be completed and signed by
a physician each year (including inoculation update) and submitted
no later than May 1, 2014. Health forms are sent to you with the
confirmation packets and are available online at hercamp.org.
No child may attend camp without submitting the health form.
CARE OF MILDLY ILL CAMPERS
Staff is responsible for reporting any signs of illness to the health
care supervisor (HCS), who assesses each situation. The HCS may
administer over-the-counter medications she believes are warranted
if they are authorized by the parent/guardian. If the HCS determines
the child should be sent home or seen by the health care consultant,
she informs the camp director and arrangements are made. In both
situations, the parent/guardian is contacted as soon as possible.
Not responsible for typographical errors. Program dates and
prices subject to change. Please visit hercamp.org for the most
current date, pricing and availability details.
GENERAL INFORMATION
CAMPERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts makes every attempt to offer
summer camp opportunities to all girls. If you have a camper with
special needs, please call 617-350-8335 to discuss how we can
make your camper’s experience one that is exciting, appropriate and
fulfilling. The information you share with us about your camper will
be held confidential, shared only as HIPAA allows, and in accordance
with your wishes.
HORSEBACK RIDING PROGRAMS
The horseback riding program allows campers to develop riding
skills and learn about equine care and barn management. All girls
registered for the riding program must bring long pants or jeans. If
your daughter has a Pony Club-approved riding helmet with chin
strap or one-inch heel boots, she may bring them to camp; if not,
camp will provide an approved riding helmet and boots.
For safety purposes, all girls will be skill-tested and the riding director
will place girls in programs/lessons that reflect their skill level.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
Horseback riding and water activities may be cancelled when
weather conditions are unsuitable. Alternative activities will be
provided. Refunds are not given when activities are cancelled due to
weather conditions.
STAFF
Our camp staff are selected for their interest and ability to work with
young people, to teach and share skills, willingness to be part of a
team, and commitment to the values of honesty, respect, caring
and responsibility. All staff are at least 18 years of age or are high
school graduates. Criminal background and sexual offender checks
(C.O.R.I. and S.O.R.I.) are conducted on all camp staff. To comply with
the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and to be licensed
by the local board of health, we inform you that you have the right
to request proof of background checks, camp health care policies,
discipline policies, as well as policies for filing grievances.
All staff attend pre-camp orientation where they learn or review
camping skills, risk management and safety procedures, Girl Scout
program, human relations, and communication skills. Many of the
staff return each year and travel from all around the world to join us.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS
Directions to camp will be included in your confirmation packet and
can also be found on the Properties page of hercamp.org.
CAMP TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is included in the cost of day camp. Bus stop location
details are included in this book and in your camp confirmation
packet. Bus service to resident camps will run from Boston, Braintree
and Burlington for $50 each way. Cancellation of bus registration
by parents must be given seven days prior to the pickup date to
receive a refund of bus fees. Buses may be cancelled by GSEM due to
insufficient enrollment.
WEAPONS, DRUGS, SMOKING POLICY
Campers and staff are not permitted to bring drugs, alcohol, pets,
tobacco products or weapons of any kind (e.g., Swiss army knives,
scissors, etc.) to camp. Prescription medication should arrive in its
original container with the camper’s name and be turned over to the
bus monitor or health supervisor upon arrival at camp.
ACCREDITATION
American Camp Association (ACA) Accreditation
means that the camp you are considering for your
child cares enough to undergo a thorough annual
review of its operation—more than 250 standards
from staff qualifications and training to emergency management.
ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of
Pediatrics, the American Red Cross and other youth service agencies
to assure that current practices reflect the most up-to-date,
research-based standards in camp operation.
