Dear Visitors,
First the good news: according to a survey by Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK), published in February
2012, in their minds half of Germany’s citizens have already packed their bags and are planning to go on
vacation for at least fi ve days. To do so they are willing, if necessary, to tighten their belts and spend less
elsewhere. At present the euro debate has not infl uenced consumer spending behaviour in Germany.
Nearly everywhere in Europe consumer confi dence has declined even further compared with last year. The
political upheavals and changes affecting society in North Africa have unsettled travellers and pose huge
challenges to tour operators.
Against this backdrop there is a special signifi cance to the ITB Berlin Convention, which this year awaits
more than 14,000 visitors. From 7 to 9 March 2012 the global travel industry’s largest think tank provides
delegates with more than just inspiration for the future. The programme looks at current developments,
promises concrete solutions and highlights examples of today’s relevant best practices.
As the travel industry’s networking event the ITB Berlin Convention is based on a tried and tested concept:
the Travel Technology Conference PhoCusWright@ITB, whose reputation has spread far beyond the borders
of Europe, is being co-organised by us and this leading US consultancy. The ITB Future Day, ITB Hospitality
Day, ITB Marketing and Distribution Day and the ITB Destination Days discuss the changes in politics, society
and the economy which impact on the travel industry. This year the ITB CSR Day again looks at barrierfree
travel and human rights in tourism. At the ITB Mobility Day the focus is on renewable fuels and smart
alternative transport for the future. The ITB Business Travel Forum looks at the world of business travel.
Once again our team has been able to attract high-ranking speakers and has organised discussion rounds
with a unique line-up of participants who are ready to debate travel industry topics. We are confi dent
that this year we can offer you a programme that lives up to the high standards of previous years, and
one that will quite literally have a long-term impact.
On behalf of Messe Berlin and the team of the ITB Berlin Convention I wish you an informative and fascinating
time at the convention.
