It all started in 1897 with
one bed. The Mercy bed.
We have grown
dramatically since
then, with 314
licensed beds today.
But our mission has not changed
since Katharine Berry Richardson,
MD, and her sister Alice Berry
Graham, DDS, took in that first
patient.
We are committed to providing
the highest quality care to every
child, regardless of the family’s
inability to pay.
Each year we provide more than
$14.8 million in charity care.
Care for which we know up front
that we will never receive financial
reimbursement. Millions more is
provided in care for which families
cannot afford to pay beyond their
insurance coverage.
Yet each of these children
receives the same, high level of
care and attention as every other
patient at the hospital. Because
at Children’s Mercy, we only have
one level of care. The best.
Community support has enabled
us to fulfill our mission of
providing the highest level of
care for every child. As city, state
and federal funding and other
support sources have diminished
and reimbursement rates have
dwindled, the community has
stepped forward to bridge the
gap.
Thanks to the support of
thousands of individuals and
corporations, we were able
to serve more than 500,000
families this past year from
charity care
throughout Missouri, Kansas
and beyond. That support is one
reason we are recognized as one
of the top children’s hospitals in
America.
