A new inpatient unit, 5 Henson, was opened in January 2005<br />

in the six-story Paul <strong>and</strong> Betty Henson patient tower. The new unit<br />

features 14 private patient rooms complete with a daybed for<br />

parents to spend the night, TV, VCR <strong>and</strong> refrigerator.<br />

Children’s <strong>Mercy</strong>, in collaboration with the University <strong>of</strong> Texas, became<br />

<strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> only two pediatric centers in the nation to test<br />

home hemodialysis equipment for children.<br />

The Children’s <strong>Mercy</strong><br />

Health Management<br />

Department was established<br />

to help guide providers in<br />

delivering <strong>care</strong> that emphasizes<br />

prevention, evidence-based<br />

guidelines <strong>and</strong> patient<br />

empowerment. Initially focused<br />

on asthma, the program plans<br />

to address childhood<br />

obesity/weight management<br />

<strong>and</strong> ADHD in the future.<br />

A new neonatal/pediatric equipped helicopter<br />

solely dedicated to the Children’s <strong>Mercy</strong> Critical Care<br />

Transport team arrived in December. The new helicopter is<br />

based at the hospital <strong>and</strong> can be en route within 10<br />

minutes.<br />

Children’s <strong>Mercy</strong> continued to exp<strong>and</strong> clinic<br />

<strong>of</strong>ferings with the opening <strong>of</strong> an ENT clinic at the 5520 College<br />

Boulevard <strong>Clinics</strong>, Endocrine <strong>and</strong> Ophthalmology clinics at Children’s<br />

<strong>Mercy</strong> Northl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong><br />

dedicated Orthopaedics clinic<br />

time for sports medicine.<br />

Two new Endoscopic<br />

Surgery suites opened<br />

in April to further support our<br />

minimally invasive surgery<br />

program. Each suite, equipped<br />

with ceiling mounted booms,<br />

plasma screen televisions,<br />

viewing screens <strong>and</strong> recording<br />

devices for teaching <strong>and</strong><br />

documentation, can set up<br />

two-way video conferencing for<br />

collaboration with other hospitals<br />

nationally <strong>and</strong> internationally.<br />

Children’s <strong>Mercy</strong> started three<br />

new outreach clinics:<br />

Orthopaedics in Jefferson City,<br />

MO; Gastroenterology in Salina,<br />

KS; <strong>and</strong> Cardiology in Topeka,<br />

KS.<br />

Children’s <strong>Mercy</strong> welcomed three physician scientists in clinically<br />

important areas in 2005. Lanny Rosenwasser, MD,<br />

joined the hospital as the Dee Lyons/Missouri Chair in Pediatric<br />

Immunology Research. Dr. Rosenwasser’s research is focused<br />

on the genetics <strong>of</strong> asthma. Chris Harrison, MD, Infectious<br />

Disease, was brought on board with a research emphasis on the<br />

immune system response to certain common childhood viral<br />

infections. Kathleen Neville, MD, Hematology/Oncology <strong>and</strong><br />

Clinical Pharmacology, came to the hospital with a research focus<br />

on the pharmacogenetics <strong>of</strong> pain treatment in pediatric sickle cell<br />

disease.<br />

Research saw a marked increase in technology transfer activity<br />

as license negotiations began to bring new discoveries<br />

with practical applications for therapeutics <strong>and</strong> diagnostics to<br />

medical practice. The hospital is currently negotiating a number <strong>of</strong><br />

agreements with corporations in the US <strong>and</strong> Europe that will result<br />

in new diagnostics <strong>and</strong> treatments aimed at improving the health <strong>of</strong><br />

children. Six new patents were disclosed during the year.<br />
