THE OTTAWA STUDENT EXPERIENCE
Fasken Martineau's new Ottawa office continues the
excellence of Johnston & Buchan LLP in communications,
trade and business law. Our Ottawa office offers a friendly
and supportive place for our students and provides them
close working relationships with lawyers and staff.
The Ottawa office usually engages one articling student each
year. Due to the size of the office and the nature of our
practice, students do not follow a formal rotational program.
You will, however, gain direct exposure to, and develop skills
in, our principal practice areas of broadcasting,
telecommunications, copyright, trade, competition and
corporate and commercial law.
Our students are compensated at rates competitive with other
major Ottawa firms. Students will receive their salary while
attending the Bar Admission Course. All related registration
and course fees will also be paid, regardless of hire-back. In
addition, articling students will receive a pre-articling bonus.
Our goal in working with students is to provide a
constructive and friendly environment in which students
learn the practice of law and become directly engaged
in work for clients. We also encourage participation in
continuing legal education initiatives. Students in the
Ottawa office are also welcome to participate in training
programs conducted by the Toronto office.

THE TORONTO STUDENT EXPERIENCE
Summer Students. An important way to spend your
summer.
Our Toronto summer student program provides a stimulating and
challenging learning experience prior to your final year of law
school. You’ll have plenty of opportunities and a lot to do in just
a few short months.
As part of our collaborative approach, we consult with our
summer students prior to their arrival at the firm to discuss their
goals and objectives. A summer program can be tailored to
match each student’s expectations and interests. Summer
students have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of
areas or can choose to focus on an area of specific interest.
Under the guidance of experienced lawyers, you will
improve your drafting, problem solving, negotiation and oral
advocacy skills.
Our formal mentoring program provides each of our students
with three supervisors. Supervisors assist students in all aspects
of their summer program, including integration into the firm,
monitoring workload and providing feedback.
We recognize that knowing and understanding the business of
our clients is fundamental to delivering effective legal services.
Working in tandem with our clients, we’ve therefore instituted our
Client Service Initiative. Under this program, summer students
are given the opportunity to tour client facilities. These visits
provide students with the chance to meet with members of the
client's senior business and legal teams to discuss issues faced
by the client in running its business operations and to hear what
they look for from their legal counsel.
Each of our summer students can also choose from an exciting
variety of external secondment opportunities. Such
opportunities include working in our other offices, clients,
government agencies and public interest groups. We’re also
open to your ideas. If you express an interest in a secondment
experience other than those historically offered, we will work with
you to facilitate a placement.

Our articling student program ensures that your articles reflect
the experience you will receive as an associate with our firm.
We have an extensive orientation and professional
development program. You'll also have the opportunity to
participate in our continuing legal education program and
various practice group meetings.
Your interests shape your articles at Fasken Martineau. Our
flexible program provides you with the freedom to modify your
rotations during the articling term. This flexibility also allows you
deeper involvement with the files that you are working on.
The strength of each of our business law and litigation
sections, and the variety of practice groups within those
sections, allows you to gain experience in your areas of
interest and to explore other fields of practice as your
interests evolve.

assisting and advising students during the articling term, each
student is formally mentored by at least two of our lawyers.
Your mentors, together with the Student Development
Committee, are responsible for providing the support,
guidance and constructive feedback necessary to ensure the

As an articling student, your performance will be evaluated
and discussed with you on a regular basis. And, of course,
we’ll want to hear from you on how we measure up to your

Our Toronto students are paid at a level comparable to that
offered by other major law firms in Toronto. Our firm pays the
salary of all our students while at the Bar Admission Course,

organized into two principal sections:
litigation and business law.
Our team of litigation lawyers is one of
Canada's largest and most respected
groups of barristers and is retained on a
wide variety of sophisticated, high profile
matters. Our litigators provide services in
all areas of the law, including commercial
and securities litigation, class actions,
product liability, insurance, banking,
administrative law and appellate litigation
to name just a few.
Our involvement in business law matters
goes far beyond structuring and
negotiating deals. We devise creative
solutions to meet the business and
litigation objectives of our clients with the
expertise of over 35 specialized practice
groups, including:
Securities, Mergers & Acquisitions
– we handle a range of sophisticated
transactions for a variety of clients. We
advise bidders in planning acquisition
strategies, developing appropriate and tax
efficient structures, arranging financing
and implementing all aspects of a
transaction. We also assist target
companies in preparing for and defending
take-over bids, including implementing
shareholder rights plans and other
defence mechanisms in hostile situations
and negotiating support agreements in
friendly situations. Additionally, we advise
our clients on a broad spectrum of
corporate finance matters.
Global Mining
– we regularly advise some of the world's
largest and fastest growing resource
companies, investment banks and
financial institutions on mergers and
acquisitions, equity and debt financing in
the Canadian and international financial
markets, and project finance. The group
also has specialized expertise in joint
ventures, permitting and closure plans,
litigation, resource taxation, environmental
compliance and aboriginal issues.
Labour, Employment & Human
Rights
– we frequently appear before federal and
provincial labour relations boards,
arbitration boards, various other tribunals
and the courts. We advise clients on
effective labour relations and personnel
practices, in addition to all aspects of
workplace regulation and pension

Technology & Intellectual Property
– we assist companies with their
intellectual property and outsourcing
needs and work with technology
companies (IT, e-commerce, life sciences

property transactions in Ontario and

Antitrust/Competition & Marketing
– we have extensive experience in all
areas of competition law, including
mergers, criminal matters and
reviewable practices (e.g. conspiracy,
pricing and distribution issues,
marketing and advertising), as well as in
competition law litigation.
Privacy & Information Protection
– we advise a broad range of clients on
all aspects of federal and provincial
privacy law and access and freedom of
information legislation, and related

CHUM Limited: advised on the $1.7 billion

Addax Petroleum Corporation: advised
on the $1.605 billion acquisition of
subsidiaries of Pan-Ocean Energy.
Air Canada: advised on groundbreaking
outsourcing agreement with ITA Software
for new reservation management system.
International consortium including
Caisse de dépôt et placement du
Québec: advised on hostile $24.7 billion
take-over of BAA plc. Caisse de dépôt’s
equity participation was $2.54 billion.
Gammon Lake Resources Inc.: acted in
its $1.6 billion business combination with
Mexgold Resources Inc.
Special committee of the board of
directors of Fairmont Hotels: advised the
special committee in the $4.5 billion
acquisition of Fairmont Hotels by Kingdom
Hotels and Colony Capital.
DaimlerChrysler: advised on the sale of
the Chrysler Group to Cerebrus Capital
Management in US$7.4 billion deal.
Represented an Ontario businessman and
his company in a libel trial against the
Toronto Star. The damages award of
approximately $1.5 million is one of the
largest in Ontario history.
Commercial Alcohols Inc.: successfully
defended a proceeding brought by the
Canadian Corn Producers before the Canadian
International Trade Tribunal and subsequently
before the Federal Court of Appeal.
Kerry Canada: successfully represented
Kerry Canada in a landmark ruling in the
Ontario Court of Appeal that will have a
significant impact on the management of
employee pension plans. The respondents
are currently seeking leave to appeal to the
Supreme Court of Canada.

- John Campion is a bencher of the Law Society of

- Elena Hoffstein is an OBA Award winner for
