<strong>MEDT</strong> <strong>301.</strong> Medical Terminology (2). Fall, Spring. Vocabulary and terms used by medical<br />

personnel; prefixes, suffixes, word roots and their combining forms, usage and spelling;<br />

specialized terms by body systems. Prerequisite: sophomore standing.<br />

Objective<br />

<strong>MEDT</strong> 301 consists of two components - a series of self instructional<br />

quizzes that are designed to teach the meaning of commonly used<br />

medical terms by repetition and drill and a series of lectures that apply<br />

those terms to related content in a manner that emphasizes understanding.<br />

To provide sufficient knowledge of the use of medical terms, to enable the<br />

student to understand the scientific language of medical practice and<br />

communicate with those who use it.<br />

Specific At the completion of the course the student will be able to:<br />

Objectives 1. State the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes<br />

2. Analyze medical terms to derive their meaning<br />

3. Properly use medical terms in practice to communicate precisely<br />

4. Understand and use abbreviations commonly used in medicine<br />

5. Understand terms and notation commonly used in pharmacy<br />

6. Understand and interpret clinical reports<br />

7. Understand journal articles dealing with medical practice<br />

Dorland's, or Blackwell's is acceptable. If you have one, don’t buy a second.<br />

Assignments The computer assisted component of the course is taken by independent study<br />

on BlackBoard. There are 15 vocabulary lessons that must be completed by the<br />

dates in this syllabus.<br />

Each vocabulary lesson is worth 2.0 % of the course grade<br />
