Especially when you can move as you wish, between eras and epochs; the fifth to seventeenth centuries. So the 20 sixth form students of Isis Academy, took a learning excursion, through sub Saharan Africa; time travelling, via the African School travel agency. They went to Tanzania, to marvel at the Indian Ocean trade, using a human map. Westwards into the Congo, visiting the Kuba Kingdom, re enacting a tribute ceremony. Then east into Rwanda, they danced to drum accompaniment role playing the First Fruits Festival. Going west into Mali, miming scenarios; depicting the craft lineages, of metal working, pottery and tanning. Finally, after Muslim Mali, they went north east to Christian Ethiopia – dramatising sacred choreography, ancient movements of priests and pilgrims. This band of travellers, celebrated Black History Month and each other using interactive tools, such as exercises, anagrams and quizzes. Eternal gratitude goes to Christine Hatwell, member of the Isis senior management, for introducing this travel offer, into the Isis Academy. A thank you goes to the sixth form teaching assistants also, Audrey Woodcock and Matteo Nasi for their enthusiastic interaction, throughout the tour. As well as studying history, the students also made history; for this is the first African Studies accreditation, designed by African News from Brookes Bridges By Sobia Afridi ANOTHER busy month again, where does the time go!
