Review Committee<br />

In accordance with Article 4 <strong>of</strong> the Memorandum <strong>of</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> the B irbal<br />

<strong>Sahni</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Palaeobotany</strong>, the Department <strong>of</strong> Science and Technology constituted<br />

a Review Committee in September 1994 under the Chairmanship <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

W.G. Chaloner, FRS to review the work and progress <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />

The terms <strong>of</strong> reference <strong>of</strong> the Review Committee were as follows;<br />

I. To review and report on the quality <strong>of</strong> research by the scientists <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong><br />

with emphasis on its appropriateness to Indian needs, its impact, scope and<br />

timeliness.<br />

2. To suggest the new directions in which the science <strong>of</strong> palaeobotany and the<br />

scientists <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> should address themselves in the future for the proper<br />

development <strong>of</strong> palaeobotany in the broadest sense.<br />

3. To suggest and recommend ways and means <strong>of</strong> evolving suitable conditions<br />

necessary for achieving its objective.<br />

4. To examine the organization and the management <strong>of</strong>the BSIP's scientific work<br />

with emphasis on interdepartmental and cross-disciplinary collaboration, and<br />

collaboration with other organisations, both nationally and internationally.<br />

5. To advise generally on any matter that in the opinion <strong>of</strong> the Committee is <strong>of</strong><br />

importance for the proper development <strong>of</strong> the science <strong>of</strong> palaeobotany.<br />

The Review Committee submitted its report to the Central Government in<br />

January 1995. The Governing Body in March <strong>1996</strong> considered the recommendations<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Review Committee on Recruitment, Training and Promotion; Communication<br />

(Internal and External); Structure; Publications; Equipment; and Future Directions <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Institute</strong>. Most <strong>of</strong> the recommendations <strong>of</strong> the Review Committee as accepted by<br />

the Governing Body have been implemented and the remaining few are in the<br />

process <strong>of</strong> implementation.<br />
