plants and the Prizes.<br />

The total strength <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> staff is 178, in which 69 are scientists and the<br />

rest include technical and administrative staff, and five <strong>Birbal</strong> <strong>Sahni</strong> Research Scholars.<br />

In the Sponsored Projects there are 8 members including scientists and technical<br />

personnel. Three appointments and promotions have been made during the year. Five<br />

staff members retired after the superannuation including two scientists.<br />

On-Going Efforts: 19<strong>97</strong>-1998<br />

The year <strong>1996</strong>-<strong>97</strong> is the last year <strong>of</strong> VIII Five Year Plan. Being the last year <strong>of</strong><br />

the VIII Plan the targets <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> the programmes by and large have been completed.<br />

The next plan, i.e., IX Five Year Plan proposed during 19<strong>97</strong>-2002 is prepared according<br />

to the guidelines and advice <strong>of</strong> the sub-committee constituted by the Research Advisory<br />

Council. It includes following projects with one to many components.<br />

studies <strong>of</strong> Tertiary sediments and search for Cretaceous-Tertiary<br />
