A fact book around for when you need it
This is my home. Todd
County — and my hometown
of Allegre — is the place I tell
people when they ask where
I’m from.
Now, mind you, they
sometimes say, “Where’s
that?” and I give them the
general directions we all have
given from time to time when
telling people where Todd
County is located ...
• Hour north of Nashville.
• Near Ft. Campbell.
• Garden of Eden.
Still, often people ask me
to tell them about Todd
County, and being the smartin-heimer
that I am, I tell
them there is no explaining
Todd County, you have to
see it for yourself.
There are rolling hills that
some mornings, when the
sun is just right, that will take
your breath as the light starts
to beat through the fog.

There are the fields of
wheat and corn that will
make you think you stepped
into one of those scenes they
play on TV during the 4th of
July celebrations while fireworks
and “America, The
Beautiful” boom in the background.
There is the history:
Robert Penn Warren and
Jefferson Davis and don’t forget
Donnie McGehee.
(If you don’t know who
Donnie was, then go down to
Helen’s Place, look at the
wall and stay for some pickin’
and dancing.)
There is the way of life
here that can only be felt and
never explained.
There are also the sacred
spots those of us who grew
up here — and even those
who went away for a time —
can sit and enjoy, some time
on their porch or in a backyard
swing, and take in the
beauty, the pace of life and
be just fine.
Still, there seems to be
more on the horizon for
Todd County. With huge
industrial opportunities both
near and in this county,
there is a chance that when I
(or whoever) write this column
for the next fact book, I
might have to first mention
the tremendous growth —
especially in the southern
part of Todd County.
While all of that and more
may happen in the years to
come, right now Todd
County is a peaceful place
full of people who are kind

The purpose of this book
is two-fold: It will be to sent
to all postal customers in
Todd County and it will also
be given away to the cities
and the county in hopes it
helps lure people to this area
and its different tourist draws
like the old
courthouse/museum, Robert
Penn Warren birthplace and
Jefferson Davis Historical
Site.
So sit back and enjoy this
book, but also set it somewhere,
and when you need
information about Todd
County, before you strain to
find it on the Internet, be
sure to check this fact book
and you will be surprised by
just how much information
we have assembled about the
place we love.
