Local farmers bring their wares Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to sellin bulk to ambitious homepreservers and vendors who generally turn around and resell at farmer’s markets and roadside stands. Anyone with a bidding number obtained on site can buy. Best advice is to get there a little early (the auction begins at 10 a.m.) to get a number and scout the lots. The auction moves pretty quickly and is usually over by noon. The auction is located at 10292 U.S. Highway 68 E., officially in Pembroke. One Todd County plant and produce stand that regularly sells goods from the Fairview Auction is Tiny Town Produce, open 8 a.m.-7 p.m. spring-Halloween. That place sells in much more reasonable quantities and again, like a lot of the Tiny Town businesses, attracts people from across the state line. Robert Penn Warren Birthplace/Museum The favorite son of Guthrie, and, for that matter, one of the favorite sons of the Pulitzer Committee, was born in a brick home in Guthrie between Third and Cherry streets. A delightful museum well-maintained by the Robert Penn Warren Committee, it houses Warren memorabilia and other pieces of Guthrie history. Warren was the country’s first poet-laureate and winner of the Pulitzer for both poetry (twice) and fiction. Hours are normally 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday- Saturday and by appointment on Sunday. Call (270)- 483-2683 for more information or to make an appointment. The RPW Committee also owns Guthrie Railroad Museum, which is home to a lot of L&N memorabilia. It is open by appointment only by calling the above number. Helen’s Place and J.R.’s Place: Those eating, music and dancing meccas are the cornerstones of Kirkmansville, owned and operated by two of the nicest people you’ll ever want to meet. Helen and J.R. Jones have been the proprietors of Helen’s for many years, with food and good music, but no place for dancing. This year, they opened J.R.’s Place across the street to add dancing to the Kirkmansville bill of fare. Helen’s is open from 6 a.m.- 7:30 for food and—when the mood strikes local pickers— music. Mondays, Helen’s closes at 3, on Saturday at 2. Dancing across the street at J.R.’s happens at from 7-10 p.m. on Tuesdays, with the Benny Pryor Band playing good, old-fashioned country music covers. Once a month on Saturdays, there is a potluck with dancing. For further information call (270) 269- 7447. Jefferson Davis Monument The third largest obelisk in the nation was dedicated in 1929 in Fairview, built by the United Daughters of the Confederacy as a memorial to the President of the Confederacy. Davis, who served in that office during the War Between the States, was born in a log cabin on the property in 1808. A lifesized monument is in a room at the base of the sculpture. Located at 258 Pembroke/Fairview Road, it is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week between May 1- Oct.31. Call (270) 889-6100 for more information about entry fees and to book tours. Pilot Rock The highest point in Western Kentucky at 200 feet, Pilot Rock, located between Allegre and Hopkinsville, is said to have been sacred to the Cherokee, likely used as a smoke-signaling site. In later years, the huge rock has traditionally attracted many sweethearts, some of whom felt compelled to leave their names behind. Today’s youth just might spot the initials of their grandparents and greatgrandparents. Yes, kids, we were all young once. Buzzard Ball Field (or Barn Yard, depends on who is telling the story) In the cliffs of Clifty, north of Elkton and south and east of Clifty, is an area that is notable if for no other reason than its name. Once a spot of hiking trails, Buzzard (whatever) is said to have some of the most beautiful vistas in the county. And yes, buzzards gather by hundreds for whatever reason these buzzards gather. Trenton has a mayor-commission form, with mayors elected every four years and commissioners every two. Todd County has two committees in conjunction with the City of Elkton. The Elkton-Todd County Recreation Commission (Park Board) and the Airport Board are comprised equally by county and city representatives. The Airport Board manages Todd County’s airport, while the park board manages countywide sports such as youth baseball or adult softball. Elkton also has a planning commission and a board of adjustments that manages zoning and land use and related permits or changes. The Todd County Community Alliance also assists with events like Christmas in Elkton. Guthrie has a Planning and Zoning Board appointed by the mayor and four full-time policemen; Trenton has a planning commission by mayoral appointment. ELKTON Nancy T. Camp is the Elkton mayor.
