Penick guesses that the largest the population of Allensville has ever been is about 350, the number on the street sign Penick grew up with and now owns. After World War II the town started to decline, Doug Penick recalls. Few places are open for business these days—a convenience market, a city park, post office and some churches are about all that’s left. Vacant lots and storefronts mark where that bustling town once stood. Now Penick owns “all them old store buildings” where he houses an amazing collection of antiques behind windows papered to keep the contents safe. While he has enough treasures to open several museums, he has no plans for that. “I’d be the oldest thing there,” he says with a laugh. Serving the area for more than 50 years Old storefronts serve as reminders of Allensville’s past. His collections spill to several sheds and barns at his farm, just a few miles away from town. There a visitor would see 20 antique tractors, eight or 10 vintage cars, such as Studebaker, Hudson and Packard, scores of dinner bells, things that could be anybody’s guess and “every kind of old farming implement that was made, just about,” he says. There is even a kitchen sink. KIRKMANSVILLE COME ON DOWN FOR FOOD, FUN AND DANCING BY MEGAN SISCO TODD COUNTY STANDARD Kirkmansville was a once thriving city. The city, founded in 1882, was named after Peter Kirkman, a co-founder of the city. It was an active place and home to four churches, several doctors, a hotel, a bank, a post office, a funeral home, a jail, four general stores and a school. It was larger than modern day Elkton by far. This thriving community did well until a series of fires destroyed the promising burg. In 1944, the first fire swept through, taking with it the bank, post office, and a residence. The town attempted to rebuild, but every rebuild was brought down by more flames. Out of the ashes a new generation is born. Maybe it came many years later, but Kirkmansville is finally recieving attention again. The new dance hall, tentatively named JRs Place, located across the street from Helen’s Place, is drawing crowds in from the surrounding areas offering both adults and children a fun place to relax and have fun on a lazy Tuesday afternoon and a great way to kick off a weekend on Friday nights. JRs Place offfers local music talents such as the Benny Pryor Band and Rocky and the Pond River Boys. As well as offering a place for people to sing karaoke. The talents keep the dance floor jumping all night long with dances such as the twist, line dances, the electric slide and the waterfall- a dance designed to allow people to make acquantainces swiftly Helen’s Place hosts a popular weekly dance. “I come to have fun and dance, And to eat.” and easily. Helen’s Place was where the bluegrass music was generally played, in a room that the Jones’ had built on the store specifically for that reason, neither of them were expecting the crowds that would show up for the show. “We had to expand the store [further]. On Fridays, when the music was playing, it was so crowded in here that no one could move,” says Helen of the recent acquisition of the building across the street. The overcrowded dining area of Helen’s was an almost desperate situation, so when the building went up for sale they bought it. The brightly lit dance hall presents a place for people to go to just have fun. “I come for the fun, the excerise, and I get to meet new people,” Flo Powell of Kirkmansville explains when asked about what draws her to the dance floor. “I come to have fun and dance,” stated Calvin Shemwell of Sharon Grove, “And to eat.” Indeed, when asked why people flock to Helen’s Place of Kirkmansville, the first answer would be the food. Helens tantalizing menu that features mouthwatering burgers, teasing cakes, and an ever-changing line-up of food draws many a person to the small town of Kirkmansville. The second answer would be the atmosphere. In both Helen’s Place and Kirmansville alike there is a true sense of friendship. It’s that 1950s hometown feel. Merely meandering down the streets of Kirmansville will afford you a smile, a wave, and a happy, genuine greeting. The people here care about one another. It is a community in which children roam because the entire neighborhood looks out for them. Helen’s Place is no different.
