battle re-enactments, the Miss
Confederacy pageant, time
period music, a re-enactors
ball and historical impersonators.
People came from all
over the region with many
wearing time-appropriate
clothing.
Most recent news in
Fairview is that of the possible
closing of its post office.
Nearly 80 people gathered at
Bethel Baptist Church in late
June to hear a postal service
representative speak and
voice their own opinions.
For a town like Fairview
with a few businesses and the
historic site, its citizens feel
the post office is important to
the liveliness of the community.
“I think it would be a great
loss to the community here,”
said Margaret Taylor, Fairview
resident and Fairview P.O.
Box user, during the meeting.
“This is a historic community
and the post office is the center
of things. That’s our identity.
We have a zip code.”
The postal service representative
said because of the
historic importance of
Fairview, several options
would be explored that are
looked at in communities of
similar size. Closing small
post offices is one of many
ways the postal service,
expected to go bankrupt in
October 2011, is looking to
cut expenses.
The postal service planned
to complete the survey of the
post office by July 2011. If
the decision were made to
close the operation, it would
happen by the end of the
year.
