BY ELIZABETH JOHNSON TODD COUNTY STANDARD City Hall, restaurants, a bank, a hair salon, a gym, law offices and other businesses fill the buildings surrounding the heart of Elkton at the public square. Kids park their bikes outside the newly opened L&R Soda Bar to grab an ice cream cone. Women circle the sidewalk together for early-morning or late-afternoon exercise. Men wake up early to grab breakfast while they sit and talk about the weather. People crowd restaurants on their lunch breaks, catching up with family and friends before heading back to work. And on sunny days you can hear a man spouting the gospel from the old courthouse lawn. It’s the epitome of small town living. “I think that Elkton still has that hometown feel to it,” said Mayor Nancy Camp. “When people come in we treat them as though they have always been here. We try not to make anybody feel like they’re a newcomer. We just try to accept them as they are.” Camp said she thinks having such a lively square is a vital part of the town, sitting almost in the center of Todd County and acting as the county seat. “We’re just hoping that we’ll never lose that, that the square will always be the center point of the city and I feel like it will be even though there’s going to be some urban sprawl,” said Camp. “We’re just trying to keep them here.” While many businesses call ELKTON: SMALL TOWN LIVING AT ITS FINEST The Old Courthouse adorns the center of the Elkton Square. lots and buildings away from the square home, those housed in the town’s center consider themselves lucky. Vickie Latham, who opened Latham’s Fabrics & More 11 years ago, knew if she wanted a successful business she would need a location on the square. After purchasing a building on the southwest corner of the square, Latham spent three months cleaning and renovating the shop. “I always stayed home with my kids,” said Latham. “After they started going to school I decided I wanted to open a fabric shop. I knew I’d come nearer doing Elkton business on the square because it hurts you a little bit if you’re off of the square.” Robyn Poynter has been serving food on the square for nearly nine years at Town Grille and now The Pizza Place. She said the location brings a lunch crowd of people who work on or near the square. “We’re from here,” said Poynter. “It’s our home. We get a lot from the schools and churches. The county and the city have always supported us.” After working with their husbands in the funeral business, Sharon Shemwell and her business partner, who died five years ago, decided to open a gift shop on the Elkton Square nearly 20 years ago.
