Four classic Edmond Hall albums as leader and sideman, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered double CD. ‘Petite Fleur’, ‘Rumpus On Rampart Street’, ‘ Teddy Buckner and the All Stars’ and ‘ Jazz at the Savoy’ plus selections from ‘Jazz at Storyville’ and ‘Edmond Hall in Buenos Aires’. With a few short spells running his own band along the way, the late 1950’s finally saw Hall go freelance and form his own band. He was considered one of the great clarinetist in the New Orleans tradition. According to great supporter Nat Hentoff in his liner notes for ‘Rumpus On Rampart Street’, ‘he is playing the hottest clarinet in contemporary jazz’. A gentle and polite individual off stage he became a deeply swinging and intensely emotional improviser once he had his clarinet in his hands. A long time sideman, Hall was happiest as his own leader where his love of improvisation could take full flight. Four classic Morgana King albums including original LP liner notes finely re-mastered on a double CD set. ‘For You, For Me, For Evermore’, ‘Sings The Blues’, ‘The Greatest Songs Ever Swung’ and ‘’Let Me Love You’. These four classic, hard to find albums, recorded between 1956 and 1959 all allude to the emergence of a bright new singing star that was Morgana King. With a four octave voice, Morgana was hard for critics to categorize, was she jazz or something else. These early albums show what a great singing talent Morgana was and (indeed still is) as she moves with consummate ease from jazz classics to blues to standards from the Great American Songbook. This album finds Ann Margaret at the very beginning of her career. This album was recorded in Hollywood in January of 1964. Ann Margaret and Al Hirt winkingly breeze through this CD’s fifteen cuts, which are culled from Bear Family’s 1999 5-CD Ann Margaret box set. Bear Family has captured a musical side of Kitt all to often overlooked - the soulful singer of formidable artistic versatility and heart. [Item Code: 66368 CD: $24.00] BGP 218 FLORA PURIM STORIES TO TELL Stories To Tell • Search For Peace • Casa Forte • Insensatez • Mountain Train • To Say Goodbye • Silver Sword • Vera Cruz (Empty Faces) • O Cantador- I Just Want To Be Here (Collective Personnel: Carlos Santana, Airto, George Duke, more) [1974] Stories To Tell was Flora Purim’s second album for the Milestone label, made in 1974, which featured a heavyweight line-up from the fusion world that included Weather Report’s Miroslav Vitous, George Duke, Earl Klugh and her husband. BLUE MOON 1618 BENNIE GREEN SWINGS THE BLUES Been Walkin • Blue Mambo • Love At Last • Penthouse Blues • Hop Skip And Jump • A Bun Dance • Pennies From Heaven • Change Up Blues (Personnel: Jimmy Forrest, Sonny Clark, George Tucker, Paul Gusman) [1959] This LP from the long-defunct Mount Vernon label does not give the personnel or dates, kind of an odd omission considering that tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest was a much more commercial name in 1959 than leader•trombonist Bennie Green. The quintet set (which also features pianist Sonny Clark, bassist George Tucker and drummer Paul Gusman) does not quite stick to the blues, since there is a ballad and a couple of numbers based on other chord changes (including the familiar ‘I Got Rhythm’ pattern). The door closes and it is dark again. In the clammy silence there is the quick click of a woman’s heels on the cobblestoned street. A rustle of silk petticoats and a scent of cheap perfume. The heels move briskly along… then falter… then stop. There is a moment of struggle, another of agonized resistance, a third moment that spans the dreadful sound of a knife tearing through silk, then flesh, and a scream of terror. Jack the Ripper has struck again! No one knows how many women were murdered by the most fiendish killer of all time. We do know that the victims were all young, poor yet attractive women who earned their livings as dance hall girls, barmaids and streetwalkers. They were all killed in the same dreadful manner… slashed with a scalpel wielded by a maniacal monster who well understood female anatomy. The musical score of the film “Jack the Ripper” authentically recaptures the special flavor of turn-of-the-century London. The exciting mood of the film is brilliantly reflected in the powerful, spine-chilling music by Jimmy McHugh and Pete Rugolo. A word of warning: before you drop the needle into the groove, I suggest you lock and bolt your door, look under the bed and behind the sofa.
