between Ray Charles and one of the most celebrated arrangers in jazz history, Quincy Jones, prior to 1961 (Charles wouldn’t make another
recording with Jones until 1965). Charles’ performances on Jones’ various arrangements are particularly noteworthy, as is their magnificent interplay
when Ray joins the Quincy Jones orchestra for the first half of the LP ‘The Genius of Ray Charles’. Also
included here are most of Charles’ collaborations with the also celebrated arranger Ralph Burns, with whom
Jones wouldn’t work again until 1988. This set includes three complete original albums: ‘Genius + Soul =
Jazz’ (Impulse AS2), ‘The Genius of Ray Charles’ (Atlantic LP1312), and ‘The Genius Hits the Road’ (ABC-
Paramount ABCS-335), as well as two interesting instrumental sessions arranged by Quincy Jones. Featured
throughout these recordings are such important jazz soloists as Clark Terry, Thad Jones, Paul Gonsalves,
Zoot Sims, Urbie Green, Bob Brookmeyer, Jimmy Cleveland, Budd Johnson, Frank Foster and Roy Haynes,
among many others. ‘The Genius Hits the Road’ features Charles with his most legendary regular band ever,
‘Far Cry’ (Prestige•New Jazz 8270), featuring Eric Dolphy in a quintet format with another star who passed
away before his time, trumpeter Booker Little. Among the many highlights are an outstanding version of the
Billie Holiday-Mal Waldron ballad ‘Left Alone’ and Dolphy’s unaccompanied alto sax reading of ‘Tenderly’.
As a bonus, two tunes originally issued under the name the Jazz Artists Guild, both of which were recorded on the same date on November 1,
1960, and each featuring one of the stars of Far Cry: Dolphy on ‘T’ain’t Nobody’s Business if I Do’, and Little on ‘Cliff Walk’. [Item Code: 66491
entirely quartet album ever. Also here are various single quartet tracks from sessions that otherwise featured
additional horns. ‘Blakey’s Blues’ featuring Morgan as the only horn with various percussionists has been
added as a bonus at the end of the set. [Item Code: 66505 CD: $16.00]
19401 HOWARD ALDEN I REMEMBER DJANGO Who Cares • Up Jumped You With Love • I Remember
Django • Jubilee Stomp • Insensiblement • Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea • Nuages • Bernardo • For Django • Nagasaki • I’m
Confessin’ That I Love You • I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles- I’ll See You In My Dreams • Tears (Personnel: Matt Munisteri, Jon Burr, Anat Cohen,
Warren Vache) [2009] It’s little wonder that guitarist Howard Alden chose ‘I Remember Django’ for the title
of this CD. Alden famously coached Sean Penn on how to play guitar and soloed on the guitar soundtrack
for Penn’s role as a Django-style guitarist in the 1999 Woody Allen movie, ‘Sweet and Lowdown’. The association
has followed him and spawned more than one Django-themed tour for Alden. Beyond this, Alden
remains the consummate keeper of the flame for traditional jazz guitar. [Item Code: 66481 CD: $16.00]
19407 INTERNATIONAL HOT JAZZ QUARTET HAVIN’ A BALL Havin’ A Ball • Linger A While •
(Personnel: Duke Heitger, Engelbert Wrobel, Paolo Alderighi, Oliver Mewes) [2010] The International Hot
Jazz Quartet is a terrific band with some internationally known all-stars, tight but with a sense of ease and a
great deal of spirit. Popular New Orleans trumpeter Duke Heitger is joined by German clarinetist Engelbert
Wrobel on reeds, Italian rising star pianist Paolo Alderighi, and Oliver Mewes on drums. These musicians
perform with the comfort, conviction, and cohesiveness that results from working together for many years.
The CD flows like a well-programmed concert, covering musical territory from the early 20th century roots
of jazz up into the 1950s. [Item Code: 66345 CD: $16.00]
