Each Timex program was hosted by a “name” person who would introduce the performers as well as tie each musical segment together with a narrative. The material here is from the first show with host Steve Allen. Guests ranged from veteran instrumentalists like Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa and the big bands of Woody Herman and Duke Ellington to the modern sounds of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Small group jazz in the swing idiom was also provided by the Gene Krupa trio and trombone legend Jack Teagarden fronted an all star group to take care of the dixieland portion of the proceedings. Carmen McRae backed by her trio and June Christy aided by the studio orchestra demonstrated the art of jazz vocalizing. The second show was hosted by Gary Moore and included the Lionel Hampton Orchestra as well as The Gerry Mulligan Quartet and George Shearing Quintet. The dixieland portion was delivered by the Dukes Of Dixieland. At the time of these recordings in 1953 the Stan Kenton Orchestra was a well oiled musical enterprise comprised of both star soloists and strong section players. Throughout the four broadcasts on this 2-CD set each soloist was called center statge by stan to solo on a feature. Also, during this period the Kenton band book continued to evolve with fresh new compositions and arrangements mostly penned by Bill Russo and Bill Holman. The surprise appearance by the Four Freshmen on the first program was due to the double booking policy of Birdland when the vocal group shared the billing with the band. The artists featured with Condon on this CD would also fill many pages in a whos, who of jazz luminaries. The recordings were made as a moral boosting initiative by the United States goverment for troops based in overseas theatres of war from 1941 until 1949 and the recordings on this disc were early examples and also rarer later 1948 editions from the time when Condon was recording with Bobby Hackett and His Dixeylanders.
