recordings (JSP 7770) concluded with eight tracks from a Playboys’ April 1940 session. This second collection begins with the remaining three titles
from that date. Things were about to take off for Wills and company. San Antonio Rose had come to the attention of the Irving Berlin Incorporated
company. Here’s the 1940 line-up - numbering seventeen - more than a match for big bands like those of Goodman, Miller and the Dorseys. And
here’s the amazingly successful New San Antonio Rose and Big Beaver showing that Bob could compete with the best on any level. These tracks
- some recorded during Bob’s successful stay in Hollywood - show how he established himself as one of the era’s leading entertainers - and how
he stayed there. [Item Code: 66570 4-CD: $30.00]
cover- ing nearly six years. Despite the Depression, they had vis- ited the studios every year except 1933. A small coterie formed, which included
pianist contemporaries Peetie Wheatstraw and Walter Davis. Only Carr’s untimely death in early 1935 brought their run to an end. Here are Carr’s
later recordings, which show he maintained his inimitable style to the end. Also included are a selection of recordings from his circle - showing
that talent was not confined to the master alone. [Item Code: 66292 4-CD: $30.00]
Tomorrow In the days of the Big Bands there were many bandleaders who fancied themselves as vocalists
as well as instrumentalists. But without doubt Vaughn Monroe was the most successful of them all. Although
a prize-winning trumpeter, when fame came to him it celebrated his talent as a singer. Affectionately once
tagged The Mellow bellow, his rich baritone voice scored a string of hits through the decade of the forties.
This new release from Flare offers a handful of those hits, giving us the chance to hear again Ballerina, Cool
Water, Riders in the Sky et al – and what superb tracks they are. In addition, however, the collection also offers
a number of fine recordings that are much less well known. And what a great collection we have – from
the haunting opening At the Crossroads, to The Phantom Stage Coach and Legend of Tiabi, they are all treasures. [Item Code: 66593 CD: $18.00]
