an ear-friendly, infectious, absorbing listening experience. David Miller keeps it real on his fifth recording<br />

as a leader with a recording that gives the standard jazz trio sound a punch and a fresh feel. The artists in<br />

this trio are rich in experience and have played with the likes of Art Pepper, James Moody, Maynard Ferguson, Joe Pass, Benny Goodman, Jules<br />

Brouusard, and Sly Stone, to name a few. Bass player Mario Suraci has played with Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley.<br />

Redd, Brooks Tegler) [2010] Critically acclaimed, with great reviews for his last recording due to his Phil<br />

Woods-like skills on the saxophone, Marty Nau proved to all to be the real deal. Here, he presents a multiclarinet-led<br />

recording with new compositions from the great Phil Woods. Nau is a clarinet master (and a<br />

damn good saxophonist) who has recorded a masterpiece. He takes the clarinet through its paces from A to<br />

Z, employing four or five clarinets through the re-recording process—but this is not a gimmick. It works as a<br />

bona fide musical device. A highly active and sought-after jazz alto saxophone player in the DC area, Nau<br />

has performed with the National Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Daniels, Stanley<br />

Turrentine, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Nancy Wilson, Maureen McGovern, Snooky Young, and many<br />

was a ten-man, compact version of Paul Whiteman’s Orchestra, that functioned as a “house band” at Victor<br />

<strong>Records</strong> between 1922 and 1924. They made dozens of eminently danceable, peppy, jazzy records, dispensing<br />

what we think of today as quintessential “Roaring Twenties” music, just as that decade was getting<br />

under way. Clarinetist Ross Gorman led the band, and gave it much of its “hot” character with his excellent<br />

playing; trumpeter Henry Busse and pianist/arranger Ferdie Grofe also contributed strongly. Early versions<br />

of many classic tunes are heard on this CD, such as “Memphis Blues,” “Rose of the Rio Grande,” “Farewell<br />

Blues,” “Shine,” “Sister Kate” and George Gershwin’s “Yankee Doodle Blues.” These 88-year-old original<br />

78s were unearthed recently in pristine, never-played condition. You will be astounded by their sonic crispness<br />

and fidelity on this CD, terms not often applied to recordings from the pre-electrical (acoustic) era of audio technology. This is fun, terrific<br />

and highly listenable music, shining brightly from a time almost beyond living memory. Fans of the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” should feel<br />

right at home with it. We recommend “The Virginians” for dinner parties! Vintage fashion shows! Dances!<br />

Pierre Favre) [1972•1979] Both Albert Mangelsdorff & Francois Jeanneau were guests on Jazz Live, and<br />

this new release in the Swiss Radio Days series presents some examples of their excellent appearances. The<br />

first time Mangelsdorff appeared, in 1967, the group played a series of standards in the mainstream style. In<br />

1972, however, he suggested that they play two half-hour sets without any specific written material, and the<br />

evening was both relaxed and exciting. A recording of that concert’s first set is included here. Janneau was<br />

the first Frenchman invited for a Jazz Live concert. He sent a series of themes, and said that it was free music.<br />

But the themes definitely had harmony structures, as well as a form. The group was excited by this challenge<br />

of filtering unknown results from very traditional pieces, accepting the composed patterns solely as a general<br />
