FRESH SOUND 623 JIMMY SMITH A DATE WITH JIMMY SMITH Falling In Love With Love • How High The Moon • Funk’s Oats • I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart • I’m Getting Sentimental Over You • Groovy Date (Personnel: Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, Hank Mobley, Eddie McFadden, Art Blakey, Donald Bailey) [1957] These 1957 sessions were the first Jimmy Smith did with horns after his recording debut the previous year. With the calibre of the top-rank musicians involved – Smith, the first to translate Bird’s innovations to the organ, altoist Donaldson, the blues-drenched Bird follower, and both Mobley and Byrd contributing some thoughtful blowing of their own on tenor and trumpet respectively - the overall results were rewarding. In the rhythm section, McFadden’s warm guitar offered another colour to the organ-and-horns sound, and Blakey, as always, was a force of nature. The Jazztet won the new star award among jazz groups in the 1960 Down beat International Jazz Critics poll. [Item Code: 66532 CD: $17.00] 1653 ART FARMER BENNY GOLSON THE JAZZTET BIG CITY SOUNDS The Cool One • Blues On Down • Hi-Fly • My Funny Valentine • Wonder Why • Con Alma • Lament • Bean Bag • Five Spot After Dark (Personnel: Tom McIntosh, Cedar Walton, Tommy Williams, Albert Heath) [1960] In this, second album, the entire personnel was reshuffled, and only the leaders remained: Art Farmer and Benny Golson. None of the changes were for the worse, judging by the present evidence. Most of the group’s values lies in the virtues of its soloists, but their presentation in a skillfully planned setting - rather than in rambling ad lib excursions of arbitrary length - was an added plus factor of its success. [Item Code: 66534 CD: $17.00] 1655 DAVE PELL OCTET SWINGIN’ IN THE OL’ CORRAL I’m An Old Cowhand • Gal In Calico • Empty Saddles • Arkansas • Camptown March And Blues • South Of The Border • Wagon Wheels • Across The Alley From The Alamo • My Sombrero • Oklahoma Hills • Cool Water • I’ll Be Hanged (Personnel: Don Fagerquist, Marty Berman, Marty Paich, Ray Sims, Tommy Tedesco, Buddy Clark, Frank Capp) [1956] Swingin’ in the Ol’ Corral or “I’ll Be Hanged If They Don’t Hang Me First” owes its existence to a disc jockey named Jack Wagner, who had the fine habit of more than occasionally spinning jazz recordings on his several KHJ programs. The Dave Pell Octet happened to be one of his favorite groups, and so it was Dave to whom he turned when it occurred to him to present a sterling galaxy of Western tunes in a jazz format. Pell seized on this one like a small lad going after a licorice stick, and in due time Swingin’ in the Ol’ Corral was strictly fact. The fact of the matter is that here is an album of great joy and rare good humor. Lofty praise of this success must be heaped on the various arrangers, who did a fine job with this collection of songs certainly familiar to everyone. The major portion of the octet’s work were dances, and over 95 percent of them were for high schools and colleges. “Almost every time we play a college or high school, there are requests for the school song,” said Pell. “When our baritone sax man suggested we make jazz arrangements on the best known college songs… I took the idea immediately. The LP first presents Timmons in a trio format with Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums, while the second consists of a quartet set with Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Sam Jones again on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. Among the many highlights are trio versions of two of the leader’s own compositions: ‘Moanin’’, ‘This Here’, and ‘Dat Dere’, as well as amazing readings of standard tunes like ‘Lush Life’ (on unaccompanied piano), ‘You Don’t Know What Love Is’ and ‘My Funny Valentine’. Includes 16-page booklet.
