Welcome Week
at LaGuardia
The start of classes is an exciting and sometimes
chaotic time. To help keep you from
becoming overwhelmed, student ambassadors
and interns will be on hand to welcome you to
the College community. On September 8, 9, 12,
and 13 during peak hours, you’ll be able to visit
an Info Zone table to ask questions, or simply get
pointed in the right direction. These Info Zone
tables will arm you with a campus map and a list
of all the must-see locations on and around
campus. Additionally, you’ll receive a free goodie
bag with some essential items for any student.
For all you social butterflies, stop by the Info
Zone and ask for a brochure and the month’s
Q & A with SGA:
calendar of events. This calendar will include a
schedule of the upcoming social events and
recreational activities.
Finally, during the Welcome Week Finale
on Wednesday, September 14 from 2:00 to
4:00 p.m. you can stop by the poolside cafe,
where there will a DJ playing music, some light
snacks and most importantly a chance to meet
some new people. There will also be a screening
of archival films of LaGuardia’s founding, archive
posters, and footage of recent campus events.
So join the festivities and get a sense of what its
like to be a member of LaGuardia Community
Graduate Amy Stone
Amy Stone is swiftly
climbing up the ladder in
her career in social
services. She was an
Alcohol and Substance
Abuse Counselor; then an
Alternative-to-
Incarceration Court
Advocate for Palladia, a
social services organization
that helps men and women stay out of jail; now,
she’s the Office Manager of the Office for Student
Services at LaGuardia Community College, helping
students in such predicaments as addiction,
homelessness, domestic violence and mental
illness.
“What better way to help someone than by
your own experience?” says the 4.0 GPA graduate.
“I don’t regret anything I did, nor what I went
through, because it saved my life.” Amy made her
first attempt at college straight out of high school
Q: What happened at last month’s CUNY
Board of Trustees public hearing?
DC: On Wednesday August 3, the CUNY Board
of Trustees voted to authorize the resolution to
raise undergraduate tuition at community
colleges by $300 a year for five years. Fall 2011
tuition at LaGuardia will be $1,800 for full-time
students who are residents of NYC. This comes
after a 15 % increase in 2009 and another 5 %
increase effective Spring 2011. Part-time students
who are NYC residents will now pay $150 per
tuition credit, and international students, who pay
as non-degree students, will experience an
increase of 10%, putting their costs at $240 per
tuition credit.
marvelous things, the delight of beholding new cities, the meeting of unknown friends, and the learning
-- Muslih-uddin Sadi
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to
the start of the Fall 2011 semester at LaGuardia
Community College. For those who are new to
LaGuardia, this is the start of an adventure in
your educational journey. It is one that I hope
will be filled with experiences that motivate you
to expand your mind, exchange ideas with new
friends and explore the possibilities, programs
and services offered at LaGuardia.
Welcome back returning students! The hard
work, dedication and commitment that enable
you to graduate and make a difference in the
world await you. I trust that you are fired up and
ready to go. Together we can introduce the newest
members of our family: students, faculty and staff,
to the caring LaGuardia community.
Whether you are a new or continuing student,
the start of the academic year is always an
opportunity to recreate yourself. In the past there
may have been things that in hindsight you would
have done differently: studying more, seeking
tutoring, joining a club or making new friends.
Put those on your to do list this term. Maybe you
have been out of school for a while and feel a little
anxious about returning; talk with an advisor or
visit our tutoring centers. Don’t sit in silence
without direction. What you will find at
LaGuardia are faculty and staff who truly put
students first. We want you to succeed and to
accomplish your goals while earning your degree.
We will all work together to ensure that you will
be able to make the most of this experience.
On a somber note, this September marks the
10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. I’m sure that
if you reflect on the past 10 years, you will find
that so much, yet so little has changed. While
there will be remembrance activities on campus
and throughout the city, I ask that you take a
moment to honor those who passed on that
tragic day and those who have passed as a result
of the chain of events that were sparked on that
day. It is my sincerest hope that any of you who
have lost loved ones have found some form of
solace and peace.
Because it is still impossible to make sense of
these horrific attacks, it might be best to focus on
making the most of our present and laying a solid
foundation for a better future. One thing we can
all do is ask ourselves how we can contribute to
making this world a better place. During this
semester and throughout all of your time at
LaGuardia, recognize that you are not just
earning a degree; you are taking steps to
becoming an even greater member of society.
Since this is no easy feat, the College
community is here to guide, support and
challenge you every step of the way. To that end,
I offer you some sound advice that I believe will
be particularly valuable for you as you embark on
your mission. Dr. Stephen R. Covey, in his widely
celebrated book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective
People,” speaks of how every person can truly
control his or her destiny. It is my hope that the
first three habits will influence your approach to
all your endeavors.
Habit 1: Be Proactive. This is the habit of
doing, rather than waiting. Being proactive means
you recognize that you are responsible for your
own life. That does not only mean facing reality;
you must also recognize that you have the power
to make positive decisions. In essence, you must
have a personal vision.
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. This is
the habit of having a clear goal from the start.
Whatever you set your mind to can be
accomplished if you stick to a plan. You must set
milestones so that you can chart your progress.
In order to get in the habit of planning, begin
with a daily “to do” list.
Habit 3: Put First Things First. This is the habit
of not neglecting the “important” for the “urgent.”
Managing your time is critical to success. Many
students have competing priorities: life, work and
family obligations. Always remember that your
education is the passport for your future. The
more you have, the more you’ll earn, and you’ll be
putting yourself in the best position to take care
of yourself and your family. Your educational
journey is a personal journey; you must have the
heart and courage to engage the senses, expand
your personal boundaries, meet new people and
be open to learning new things. Having a personal
vision and a plan will help you tremendously at
LaGuardia and beyond.
Once again, welcome and Godspeed!
The Division of Student Affairs Newsletter for Students
Student Government Association
From the SGAPresident
Dear Fellow LaGuardians,
LaGuardia Community College first opened its
doors to the public in September of 1971. Together
with our school’s administrators, faculty, and staff,
we will proudly celebrate LaGuardia’s 40th
anniversary this fall.
Part of the College’s legacy is reflected in the
student programs and services offered to enrich
our college experience and empower us to make
good decisions about our education. Unfortunately,
some of us are saddled with the additional
responsibilities of a job or a family, and have little
time available to explore these opportunities.
Because we are so preoccupied by our weekday
obligations off campus, we can only afford to come
to the College to attend classes during the evening
or on weekends.
After last spring’s Student Government
elections, your governors and I came to realize that
we must work to improve the level of access to
these programs and try to create new ways for us
to experience our student body’s diverse social and
cultural interests. Also, we must be engaged with
one another to achieve these goals.
The Student Government Association (SGA)
will take time throughout this year to listen to
ideas from students on how to improve LaGuardia
and take all necessary steps to provide a college
experience that will last a lifetime.
The SGA also wants LaGuardia students to
register to vote, so that we can influence the
decision makers whose policies often affect the
quality of our education. If all of us are registered to
vote, we can prevent the kind of budget cuts to
CUNY that resulted in the recent increase in our
tuition and fees.
Despite the economic pain we are all enduring,
LaGuardia Community College’s excellence has
not diminished, and we must ensure that legacy
continues for the next 40 years and beyond.
Sincerely,
Donavan Borington
President, Student Government Association
SGA meets in room M160 every Wednesday
we encourage you to attend.
Q&A from p. 1
Q: What does this mean for LaGuardia
students?
AC: It means fewer opportunities. At the rate
that tuition is increasing, community college will
eventually no longer be the accessible alternative
in higher education. Most students at LaGuardia
do not have abundant household incomes; tuition
increases will cause many to face the tough
decision of taking fewer classes and postponing
their graduation, cutting costs in other areas of
their lives that are already under strain, or it may
even mean dropping out.
Q: What can be done?
AC: Students need to look for other resources.
This means applying for LaGuardia Foundation
scholarships and outside scholarships, as well as
taking their classes seriously; there’s no time or
money to waste. We also need to write letters to
CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, urging him
to fight the increases on our behalf. Becoming
involved with the Student Government
Association is also important, so that we can be
informed and support our student body. Most
importantly, students shouldn’t be discouraged;
be persistent and do what ever is necessary to
graduate, even if it takes longer than expected.
but dropped out when she became pregnant
with her first child, Lindsay, now 12. Then her
life in the fast lane came to a screeching halt
when she was sentenced to two years in prison
for a felony conviction, during which time her
second child, Jacob, now six, was born.
Upon her release, Hour Children, a Long
Island City-based organization that provides
housing and other services to formerly
incarcerated women and their families, gave her
support – the same support that she now strives
to afford to others. “It’s hard to make a change in
your life while you don’t change your routine and
environment,” says Amy. “Getting educated was
my only way out.”
After one last failed attempt at college in
2006, Amy is finally walking in LaGuardia’s
commencement ceremony this September. “
So much of what I’ve learned I’m applying
directly to my work every day,” she says about
her education at LaGuardia. “I felt so at home
in my classes at LaGuardia; I’m sad to go, but I
won’t leave LaGuardia completely before leaving
my mark.”
With the help of a $10,000 scholarship from
the Women’s Forum, Amy will attend Lehman
College to earn her Bachelor’s degree and pursue
her dream of becoming a mental health
educator.
environment? Do you want to get more involved
with the EPA and sustainability efforts on
campus? You can be an EPA OnCampus
ecoAmbassador!
You can choose from a variety of events and
projects, all of which are based on projects from
EPA program offices, and utilize EPA resources to
plan environmental activities. Past
ecoAmbassadors have improved recycling efforts,
organized Earth Day celebrations, initiated
composting programs and certified campus
buildings as Energy Star compliant. To get
involved, select an activity and a professor or
administrator as your school sponsor, register
your project or activity online, then organize your
event and report your results.
You will not only help in greening your campus,
but will also develop valuable leadership and
project management skills. The most active
ecoAmbassadors will have the opportunity to
interact with EPA employees at the Regional
offices, Headquarters, and lab facilities.
Registration begins on September 1st and any
individual or student organization can participate.
Welcome to LaGuardia
From The Center for Counseling, Advising & Academic Support
Welcome to LaGuardia! What a wonderful
semester this is going to be. Let’s take a moment
to fast forward - kind of like time travel - to find
out what the END of your semester is going to
look like. Ready? Here we go!
Now, imagine that your academic journey for
this semester has come to a close. How do you
feel? Are you elated from having a wonderfully
successful semester? Or perhaps you are
exhilarated from your hard work and the
accomplishments you achieved? Now, imagine
that your finals are done, and you just received
your grades. How did you do? How do you look
and feel as you see your grades? Are you beaming
with pride? Do you feel tingles all over from
achieving wonderful grades? Or are you simply
relieved that you passed the courses you found
most challenging?
Now, let’s come back to the present. Ta–Da! It’s
only September, and you have the whole semester
ahead of you. In other words, you have the whole
semester to CREATE the outcomes that you just
envisioned in your mind. Your point of power is
right here in this moment and in all moments
from now until your last final. At every moment
you can choose to embrace the journey, learn new
things, and persevere, even when the learning
process feels challenging. Here are some tips to
help you make this semester the best it can be:
• Make room for school. Often, students
underestimate the amount of time that
schoolwork is going to require. Achieving
stellar grades means dedication and reserving
large blocks of time each day for schoolwork.
• Be open and enthusiastic about learning new
information. This is what college is all about!
• Keep your eyes on the prize. If the going gets
tough, especially towards the end of the
semester, stay calm and make lists to prioritize
your tasks. If you need to reach out for help,
come to the Center for Counseling in B100
and the Center for Academic Support in B102.
Beginning a new semester means beginning a
chapter in the book of your academic career and
the book of your life. With your intelligence,
energy, and effort, you will indeed be able to call
your Fall 2011 semester at LaGuardia a fabulous
semester!
LAGCC Honors Program Alumni Share Tips on
How to Apply to Prestigious Four-Year Colleges
The Honors Program at LaGuardia
Community College held a transfer workshop in
August for students needing guidance with their
applications to four-year institutions. The
turnout was fantastic; over 40 students showed
up on the first Monday morning of their
vacations, eager to hear tips from LaGuardia
alumni that have gone on to prestigious colleges.
Tashdid Hasan, who completed the Honors
concentration at LaGuardia and continued at
Columbia University, made time to come in for
the second year in a row despite holding a fulltime
job and being a full-time student. Along
with him, Kevin Magana (Georgetown
University) and Syed Hossain (Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute) shared their transfer
success strategies. They covered writing the
personal statement, getting recommendation
letters, building credentials, using the Common
Application, and other areas of the transfer
process that, without direction, can be very
perplexing to students. “I was rejected from
some schools because I didn’t have a lot of
guidance,” said Tashdid, who is receiving $40,000
a year to fund his education. “And just like I’m
receiving a scholarship at Columbia because
someone before me wanted to make my college
experience a little easier, I can save some of these
students the initial trouble simply by sharing my
knowledge, because the transfer endeavor can be
a difficult one to tackle alone.”
“It’s thrilling to see that so many students are
interested in getting transfer help and are
starting their applications early,” said Honors
Program Director Dr. Karlyn Koh. “I’m touched
and amazed by these alumni who want to help
and are giving back too. They are beyond
generous.”
The Honors Program at LaGuardia, aside
from offering Honors courses, holds several
workshops throughout the year aimed at
supporting and enhancing students’ college
careers. The Honors Student Advisory
Committee (HSAC), the student-run branch of
the Honors Program, also focuses on building a
community of current and past Honors students
at LaGuardia. They are located in suite M-222
along with the College’s honor society Phi Theta
Kappa, which focuses on building students’
scholarship skills. More information on the
Honors Program can be found on their website:
www.lagcc.cuny.edu/honors/. Inquiries can be
made by email to honorsprog@lagcc.cuny.edu.
This semester you will notice something
different about your coffee cup. If you buy a
12oz coffee in the cafeteria or are having an 8oz
coffee at a catered event or meeting on campus,
your coffee will be served in an
eco-friendly cup. The coffee cup,
decorated with leafs, is made
from 100% renewable sources.
Unlike traditional cups, these
coffee cups aren’t
manufactured using
petroleum-based paper or
plastic. Instead they are produced from
renewable sources like corn, sugar and bamboo.
The Sustainability Council would like to
thank the College’s foodservice provider, MBJ,
for agreeing to introduce these “green” coffee
cups at no additional cost to students, faculty
New Elevators in the
C-Building
New elevators should make getting to and
from classes in the C building much easier.
Two new passenger elevators were up and
running in August. With the addition of the
two elevators, there are now a total of six
passenger elevators in the building. Students,
faculty and staff can expect reduced waiting
time and reliable service. Improving the
quality and availability of elevators has been
a major focus of the College; prior to the new
elevators, the four existing elevators on the
east side were modernized and equipped
with new cabs and dispatch controls.
Construction of the two new elevators
began in late 2009. The project included
major demolition performed at night to avoid
disruptions to classes and services. Two
new elevator shafts were cut, floors were
reinforced and elevator machine rooms
were built on the roof and in the basement.
Above each elevator is a numerical
position indicator which are designed to
inform anyone waiting which floor it’s on.
Hopefully within the next several months, the
new LCD monitors will also be operational on
every floor displaying the status and location
of all six elevators.
Do You Have an Attitude? We all have different
thoughts, feelings, beliefs and opinions about the
various aspects of our lives, including our academic
lives. The attitudes we hold have a direct impact on
our ability to succeed. What attitudes do YOU have
about your ability to succeed in school? Do you
expect to fail, “barely pass” or succeed with flying
colors? Do these attitudes affect your ability to
study effectively, complete assignments on time,
and approach your assignments with enthusiasm?
Come to this workshop to explore ways to move
past attitudes that sabotage success!
Become a Creator and Get the Life You’ve
Always Wanted: Imagine everything that you
are or will be is completely up to you. You are
where you are because of who you are. Everything
that exists in your life exists because of you,
because of your behavior, words, thoughts and
actions. Personal responsibility begins on the inside
and moves outward
towards the circumstances
we create in our world.
Creating the life that you
want means you have
freedom of choice, and
because you have chosen
each and every
circumstance of your life, you are ultimately
responsible for all of your success and failure,
happiness or unhappiness, your present and, more
importantly, your future. This workshop will show
you how responsibility goes hand in hand with
motivation, achievement, success and happiness.
