10 www.frodshamlife.co.uk May 2013 Carp removed from beauty spot lake THOUSANDS of carp have been removed from Frodsham beauty spot Crowmere Lake. The work was carried out by a specialist, licensed contractor engaged by the Town Council, following a study of the lake and acting on the advice of the Environment Agency. This study showed that the lake was too small and too shallow to support the carp population and that if action wasn’t taken there was a risk of many of the carp dying, either through oxygen starvation or through the carp themselves turning cannibal because of their being insufficient food available for them. The carp have been removed to a more suitable location and the contractor will now be restocking the lake with native freshwater fish. Removal of the carp should also end years of problems at Crowmere due to anti-social behaviour by anglers fishing for the carp - often late at night. May 2013 www.frodshamlife.co.uk 11 High school pupils visit Cape Town A PARTY of pupils from Helsby High School visited Cape Town as part of the school’s AfriTwin programme - and enjoyed what all described as one of the best experiences of their lives. They visited Enkelulekweni Primary School, their partner school, Hector Peterson High School and Settlers High School - the school their hosts attend. Their stay in South Africa was packed with activity and included visits to Table Mountain, Seal Island and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. They were taken on a tour of the prison by a former inmate who had experienced the prison first hand! Also during their stay, the Helsby pupils gave English lessons to primary school children, joined in singing and dancing. There were trips round a township and also to a shopping centre and lessons in Xhosa - the local language. The youngsters were left impressed at how proud the South African pupils were of what they had - despite the fact it was so little compared with what Helsby High has to offer. One pupil said: “It made you think about how privileged we are.” The Helsby youngsters now say they just can’t wait to play host to their partner children when they visit the UK. New options for Churchfields play plan TWO new alternative schemes are to be produced for the development of improved play facilities at Churchfields, Frodsham. The Town Council has asked consultants Groundwork Cheshire to work up two new options, following expressions of concern from local residents. Groundwork has now been asked to look at the scope for moving a proposed wheeled play area out of Churchfields and locating it in Castle Park or moving it to the back of the site, close to Pinmill Cottage. In both cases, the intention is to increase the distance between the new play facilities and houses on Froda Avenue. Councillors have stressed that the wheeled play area is intended to address a lack of such a facility and to cater for small children only. Residents who attended a meeting of the Town Council’s Play Areas and Play Committee stressed that they were not opposed to improving play facilities on Churchfields but wanted it to retain its character as a field. But they were opposed to a skate park and the wheeled play area because of potential noise and visual impacts and its nearness to houses. They complained of anti-social behaviour, often late at night and feared the proposed developments could increase problems. Town Council chairman Mark Warren said residents would be kept informed of future public consultation meetings. A key opportunity for residents to have their say would be at the Annual Town Meeting, which is to take place on Saturday, May 18 at 12 noon at Main Street Community Church. Young writers competition MORE than 50 Year 11 and 12 pupils from Helsby High School took part in the RIBI Young Writer competition when the theme was “Peace”. Entries had to be in the form of a letter written to anyone living, dead or yet to be born. The Rotary Club of Frodsham and Helsby supported the competition in the school by Connor Ross Jenkins with Mr Williams. donating a prize fund - and club president Gareth Williams helped judge the finals and presented the prizes. Winner was Conor Ross Jenkins, runner-up was Mackenzie Weir while third placed was Keith Blackhall.
