COVER STORY
Rotary is a part of Lethbridge
By Jeff Wiebe
For the Lethbridge Journal
The Rotary Club’s name and symbol may
be ubiquitous, but many people probably
aren’t aware just how much the organization
contributes to communities around the
world.
Rotary is celebrating its 100th anniversary
this year, and has been in Canada almost that
entire time, with the first international club
opened in Winnipeg in 1912. Lethbridge has
had a Rotary chapter since 1918 and now
boasts four clubs comprising more than 200
members – Lethbridge, Lethbridge Sunrise,
Lethbridge East, and the newest, Urban Spirits.
But what exactly does the Rotary Club do?
Karen Gunn, communications manager
for the Lethbridge Rotary, says people join
for many reasons, but all share a common
goal of volunteering to improve their community
and others like it.
“People join for different reasons. They
join because they want to volunteer and give
to their local community, or maybe they’re
sold on Rotary International, which touches
every part of the world, and it’s great to know
you’re contributing to that,” says Gunn, adding
that the local club was heavily involved in
raising donations following the recent earthquake
in Haiti.
Rotary International also recently teamed
up with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
which gave Rotary a $100 million dollar
grant that the organization will match in
an effort to eradicate Polio. The local chapter
is also involved in international work, and
is currently working on a water project in
Costa Rica.
Each Rotary club has the authority to pursue
the projects its members decide upon,
whether it be on the other side of the world,
or closer to home.
“We look at the needs, more than anything,”
says Geri Hecker, president of the Lethbridge
Rotary.
“It has to be really vetted and make sure
it’s something we really want to do,” she adds.
Often, projects are brought to the group’s
attention by members who simply see a need
and try to figure out a way to address it. The
Costa Rican water project began as an initiative
of University of Lethbridge Rotaract
club.
“We usually have a committee that’s
formed, and they go and research a project
and test the viability of it. Then they bring
it back to our board to discuss and see how
we feel about it, and we bring it to the club,”
says Gunn.
Both the U of L and Lethbridge College
have Rotaract clubs, which aren’t chartered,
but are affiliated with larger, chartered Rotary
groups.
The Lethbridge Rotary clubs have also
been involved in many projects with local
impact, including the Galt Gardens fountain
and the annual Dragonboat races.
“The clubs lots of times do their own projects,
but they also get together to create bigger
projects,” says Barrie Orich, director of
membership for Lethbridge Rotary.
The local clubs sponsor post-secondary
scholarships and organize youth programs
to help kids learn more about themselves
and become better leaders. Other youth
programs include exchanges whereby a local
high school student is sent abroad by the
club and an international high school students
is hosted here.
“They get exposure to Canada, and we
get to learn about their country as well,” says
Hecker.
Exchange students must travel to a country
where they need to learn the local lan-
guage, and each week, students are required
to present a summary of that week’s activities
to the club, giving them language and public
speaking experience.
“Usually, the first time they do it they’re
very quiet and meek. By the end of it, they’re
cracking jokes and all kinds of things. I love
seeing the transition that they’re comfortable
and having an incredible experience,” explains
Gunn.
Given the multitude of projects the club is
involved in, it’s not difficult to see the appeal
in becoming a Rotarian, and the local chapters
are always trying to grow their membership.
New members need to be sponsored by
existing ones, but they don’t need to personally
know their sponsor beforehand. Orich
says he has been approached by strangers inquiring
about sponsorship into the organization
and was happy to help.
“We invite them to a meeting so they can
get a feel for what it’s all about, and if they like
it, we sponsor them.”
Members attend weekly meetings – each
local chapter schedules its meeting at a different
time in order to best accommodate local
needs – where they can hear speakers present
on a variety of topics, from Rotary’s international
work to the state of the economy.
“We’re fortunate that we have both the university
and the college, and both of them have
terrific international contacts,” says Orich.
“They also have some brilliant people
working there – it’s amazing the caliber of
people, so we also get them as guest speakers
sometimes.”
Members are also expected to volunteer at
local fundraisers, like the upcoming Lobsterfest
on June 5. As Rotary is heavily involved
in the business community, Orich says there
is a focus on attracting members from a variety
of backgrounds.
“One of the basic premises of Rotary is
that it’s focused on the business community,
and we try to make sure we have at least one
member that represents a business type, so
that we have a broad range of the community,”
he explains.
“We like to have members that represent
every part of the community.”
Horns Blue Runs in the Family
LETHBRIDGE, AB – Coming off their
first playoff appearance in 8 seasons, the
Pronghorn women’s basketball team and
Head Coach Donna Branch, are excited to
add their first commitment for next season.
Her name and family are not strangers to
Pronghorn fans as Cassidy Taal is set to join
the Horns next season, following in her sister
Lauren’s footsteps. Cassidy and Lauren are
second generation Pronghorns, as her mother
and family have a long history with Pronghorn
Athletics. Lynette Taal (Lilja) suited up
for the Pronghorns from 1978 – 1983, and
was named a CWUAA All-Star twice and
Pronghorn Female Athlete of the Year in
1983. She sits tied for 14th on the Pronghorn
all-time scoring list with 602 points. Lynette
also served as an assistant coach with the
Horns during 1990-99 and has recently returned
to assist Coach Branch.
The Lilja family was inducted into the
Pronghorn Hall of Fame in 2002. Jack Lilja
Sr, Cassidy’s grandfather, coached the Horns
Women’s Basketball team for four seasons
in the 1970’s. Lynette’s sisters both preceded
her with the Women’s basketball team, Lorell
playing 1973-77 and Leslie from 1974
through 1979 and Brother Jack Jr played both
basketball and soccer for the Pronghorns.
Coming off a severe knee injury, Cassidy
captained her LCI team this year, where
the Clippers finished third in the 4A South
Zones, defeating Medicine Hat in the third
place game and entered the Provincial tournament
ranked 10th. The 5’10” forward averaged
12.1 points during the Clippers 12-4
season in the Southern Alberta High School
Basketball League.
“Cassidy Taal was a player who was being
watched in her Grade 10 year,” said Coach
Branch. “She was doing what was necessary
at that point in her life to be a CIS player.
Then she tore her ACL. Through the rehab
process, I watched a young lady show such
determination to get back to a sport she so
dearly missed.”
The injury forced her to miss her entire
grade 11 season, but as an reflection of her
character and perseverance during this in-
jury, she was awarded the “Courage Award”
- a special Athletic award at the LCI Athletic
Awards ceremony.
Cassidy has also been part of the Basketball
Canada Center for Performance – Alberta
and the Regional Training Center –
South; in addition to playing in the Junior
Horns program and Lethbridge Selects.
“Throughout her Grade Twelve, Cassidy
has continued to show that she wants,
and is capable of playing at the University
level. She is a very smart player who has so
much potential and I feel we have only begun
to see what she is capable of,” continued
Branch.
“She will fit nicely into the Pronghorn
program and she knows the work it takes
and already has that Pronghorn Pride.”
University of Lethbridge benefits
from World Water Day
OTTAWA, ON - Canada’s Environment
Minister, Jim Prentice in partnership with
Western Economic Diversification, recently
announced the Government of Canada’s
$3.75 million investment towards water
quality research at the Universities of Lethbridge
and Saskatchewan.
“The international theme for World Water
Day 2010 focuses on the importance of water
quality. Here at home, the Government
of Canada also sees water quality as a critical
issue,” said Minister Prentice. “By partnering
with these universities on world class science,
we are working to preserve Canada’s water
quality for today and future generations.”
Environment Canada will provide more
than $1.5 million of in-kind support and
Western Economic Diversification will provide
$2.25 million towards research projects
that will ultimately assist organizations in
making environmentally-responsible decisions
aimed at preserving water quality.
“The Government of Canada is committed
to supporting innovative and knowledgebased
research to find new products, technologies
or services that address environmental
sustainability issues such as water quality
and water quantity,” said Western Economic
Diversification Minister Yelich. “Through investments
in technology commercialization,
we are preparing our economy for future
growth and long-term prosperity.”
“Access to and sharing of water and land
use information and knowledge remains
one of the most significant challenges to the
development of responsible management
policies and plans,” said University of Lethbridge
President and Vice-chancellor Dr.
Bill Cade. “The Water and Environmental
The projects complement Environment
Canada’s commitment to the Global Environment
Monitoring System Water Program
(GEMS/Water) of the United Nations
Environment Program (UNEP), an international
water science program that develops
and maintains a global freshwater
quality information system for use by all
United Nations members. The program received
additional federal funding last year.
In Alberta, the University of Lethbridge will
lead the establishment of the Water Resource
Technology Initiative (WRTI), a group that
will initially develop the Water Hub, an interactive
web-based platform that will be a
repository for water data, mapping and imagery,
and environmental science data. Information
from the Water Hub will be available
to help organizations develop water resource
technologies.
At the University of Saskatchewan, researchers
will develop software that can be
used as a decision-support tool to help energy
developers make environmentally-responsible
decisions on power plant locations
by determining the impact of power plants
or other power-generating technologies on
water quantity and quality in the area. Once
developed, the software will be marketed to
utility companies, power generation equipment
suppliers and governments.
World class recording studio
made me utter “WOW”
Have you ever walked into a place and
you were so amazed at what you were looking
at you just went, “Wow!” I’ve had a few
of those moments. I remember walking
into McMahon Stadium in Calgary as a kid
for my first football game. The players were
practicing on the field which was real grass
and at the time was the best manicured field
in the CFL. There were stadium lights and
thousands of people in the stands. I had
never seen anything like it. I turned to my
dad and said, “Wow.” (Real articulate kid.)
There was the time I got to walk into a radio
station control room for the first time with a
D.J. on the air. There were turntables and cart
machines and the announcer (Brother Jack
Neufeld) was wearing headphones and was
just about to go on the air. The microphone
was turned on and the music was muted as he
spoke. Yes, it actually was a “wow” moment
for me. Last week there was another one. I
had a chance to visit the brand new stateof-the-art
recording studio at the University
Of Lethbridge. It will be part of the Digital
Audio Arts Program, the only undergraduate
degree program currently being offered
in Canada. The studio is custom made and is
amazing. And as I walked into the room with
the cherry red hardwood floors and the massive
sound board, I repeated my comment
from that McMahon stadium day. “Wow.”
We are living longer and
getting larger
We are living longer than ever, according
to a recent American government report
that states that the average lifespan has now
increased to 78 years. And the news is even
better for Canada. On this side of the border,
we are living to a ripe old age of 80.7 years. In
1950, it was 68.2 years – of course, back then,
smoking was encouraged, no one wore seatbelts
and a transplant was what you did to an
African Violet when you needed to move it
to a bigger pot.
So I guess with this information, we can
assume all those things we hear on the nightly
news about this killing us and that killing
us are not doing a very good job of killing us
at all. Or maybe, not yet.
One of the major health issues that the
talking heads keep yammering on about is
obesity. Here’s a familiar warning: “obesity is
the nation’s number one public health problem.”
That was the New York Times in 1952.
Almost 50 years later, almost five decades
of knowing that we should be eating less, has
anything improved? No, the experts say, it’s
actually getting worse.
So what’s going on? What’s the excuse?
Almost everybody wants to lose at least a
little weight. Health experts tell us we are in
an obesity crisis, yet every single one of us
knows what to do about it: eat less, exercise
more. It’s a simple formula for an almost impossible
task.
Go back in time all the way to the turn of
the last century, and the battle of the bulge
was raging even then. The flappers of the
1920s were wafer thin Kate Moss-types who
were obsessively watching their weight. And
people understood even then about the invisible
nutrients in food that promised better
health.
Even though we know better, our best intentions
are easily swept away in a wave of
temptation, and the temptation factor is
something the experts don’t measure. Television
executives get it. They have entire
TV networks built around our fascination
with food. TV chefs like the cantankerous
chef Ramsey are the new celebrities. It’s now
possible to watch them roasting a chicken
around the clock.
Former U.S. Food and Drug Administration
commissioner Dr. David Kessler sheds
some light on this perplexing problem we
Listen to Country 95.5 FM to Win
(10)
seem to have with food in his book, The End
of Overeating. He says the billion-dollar food
industry has done a masterful job in learning
how to design foods to be optimally stimulating
– foods layered and loaded with fat,
sugar and salt that are as self-reinforcing as
cocaine.
Some of the leading addiction researchers
in the world believe highly processed, modern
day foods interact with the brain in ways
similar to drugs of abuse. Rena Mendelson,
one of Canada’s leading nutritionists, says
people are compelled to eat food because
it’s attractive, because they know it’s going
to taste good, and when they eat it, it tastes
good and as a result they want more of it because
it tastes so good. So nutrition is probably
playing less of an important role than it
needs to.
Taste is another clue to the mystery of why
we just can’t cut back. Entire industries are
devoted to making sure it tastes good. They
are only trying to make us happy, to make
us like the food and, of course, buy the food.
They don’t really think about whether it’s
good for us if our doughnuts are drenched in
extra sugar and stuffed with cream.
The real problem, though, is what’s happening
with the younger generation. The
number of obese people in that population is
rising. The biggest indicator in terms of this
problem is the number of people presenting
with type two diabetes, children in particular.
Type two diabetes used to be referred to
as adult onset diabetes. Now it’s showing up
in children, which was never before heard of.
This increases the danger more than ever.
Other factors are included besides our addiction
to foods saturated with fats, sugars
and salt. We live more sedentary lifestyles, we
eat larger portions and the junk food costs
less than the healthier choices.
So the solution may be simple: eat better,
eat less and exercise more.
But have you ever prepared fried chicken?
It’s moist, it’s succulent, it’s crispy, it’s tasty
and boy, when that smell fills the room, it’s a
real turn on. It’s hard to stop at just a couple
of pieces, and that’s just dinner. Breakfast
contains four eggs, four strips of bacon and
a coffee that contains more sugar than six
scoops of ice cream.
Maybe I won’t make it to the Canadian average
of 80.7 years eating this way, but if you
would like to live to be 100, a recent study
found that a Mediterranean diet rich in fish,
olive oil, fruits and vegetables can increase
longevity in people already in their 90s. But
since Willard Scott doesn’t wish happy birthday
to people who make it to 100 anymore on
The Today Show, what’s the point?

Raptors at crossroads
JOURNAL
Spring is the season of optimism. Winter
is over. It is a time of rebirth. Spring is a time
to fire up the grill once again, or to bring out
the motorbike. Or, if you’re the Toronto Maple
Leafs, break out the golf clubs.
However, it’s not all roses this spring for
the Toronto Raptors. As the calendar flips
over to April, the NBA club is fading hard as
the regular season comes to a close.
For the Raps, missing the playoffs would
be bad enough. It also may just be the impetus
that locks Chris Bosh’s decision to leave
town. Talk about a double-whammy.
Now, the only thing that may save Canada’s
only NBA franchise from not missing
the second-season is that the Eastern Conference
has only seven other decent-to-great
teams.
So, it looks like Toronto will still manage to
hold onto at least the eighth seed in the east,
perhaps as high as sixth. Chicago might upset
that plan by sneaking into the final playoff
berth. However, the Bulls are actually playing
worse than the Raptors at this point in time.
“Well, Marty,” one or more of my faithful
readers might soon say: “They made the
playoffs! That’s grrrreat!” Who knew Tony
the Tiger reads For What It’s Worth?
And I would respond: “Well, Tony, as the
eighth seed, you get the privilege of facing
Cleveland in the first round. Good luck
against sure-to-be Most Valuable Player LeBron
James and the rest of the Cavaliers, who
are going to win about 70 games when it’s all
said and done.”
So, even if the Raptors make the post sea-
ke
FOR WHAT IT’S
WORTH
M A R T Y B A C E D A
son, they are in for an early exit. Anything
outside of getting swept by the Cavs would
be a surprise.
Then it’s decision time for Bosh. The organization’s
all-time leader in points and rebounds
can opt out of the final year of his
contract as of July 1. There is a 110 per cent
chance of this happening. You might have
heard about the 2010 free agent class, since
there are some other prominent names that
will be on the market: a couple of guards
named LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.
Also, thought to be available: Amar’e Stoudemire,
Joe Johnson and Carlos Boozer
among others.
Despite of all the talent that will be on the
market this summer, Bosh will be one of the
most sought-after players. Big men with his
size and skill are hard to come by, and the
Georgia Tech (Go Wramblin’ Wreck!) grad is
a legit double-double (double figure averages
in points and rebounds per game) machine.
In fact, at 26-years-old, Bosh is entering
what should be his prime. The 6’10’’ forward
is totalling a career-best in both points
and rebounds per game, while shooting his
highest percentage from the field. He is the
heart-and-soul of the Raptors, and it is hard
to imagine what the club would be like without
him.
However, there is a dilemma in signing
Bosh long-term. Is he really a “franchise”
player? For every Kobe Bryant or Tim Duncan
who have inked max-contracts and then
led a team to a championship(s), there are
lots of other players who made similar money
only to clog up salary caps and become
an onerous burden on a franchise: Stephon
Marbury, Tracy McGrady, Zach Randolph –
and, unbelievably, many, many others.
If you look at the NBA champions from
1980 on, there is one common denominator:
each winner had a least one Hall-of-Famecalibre
player. The Los Angeles Lakers of the
1980s had Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
The Boston Celtics of that same
era boasted Larry Bird and Kevin McHale.
The Philadelphia 76ers had Julius Erving and
Moses Malone.
As the ‘80s shifted into the ‘90s, Detroit
was led by Isaiah Thomas and Joe Dumars.
Then the Chicago Bulls took things over,
thanks to some guy named Michael Jordan,
aided by Scottie Pippen. Houston earned a
pair of titles while MJ was playing baseball,
led by Hakeem Olajuwon. Jordan returned
and won three more rings before the San An-
tonio Spurs and Tim Duncan won their first
title with David Robinson. Another Lakers
dynasty then followed with Shaquille O’Neal
and Bryant leading the way.
There is one exception: Detroit’s title in
2004. Now, there’s an outside chance Chauncey
Billups could sneak his way into the Hall,
but it’s a long shot. Miami in 2006 had O’Neal
on its title side and Wade, who has the careerarc
of a Hall-of-Famer. Also this decade, the
Spurs won two more championships with
Duncan, then recently the Celtics with Kevin
Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce – all three
good Springfield bets – and last year Kobe
and the Lake Show.
Is Bosh in that class? It’s hard to say. He has
yet to lead his team to a post-season series
win in two previous tries.
Does Bosh even want to stay? The Raptors
inked Hedo Turkoglu to a big contract this
past summer to be his sidekick and the Turkish
national, so good for Orlando last season,
has been a bust, averaging five points per
game less. Former first-overall pick Andrea
Bargnani continues to play inconsistently.
Point guards Jarrett Jack and Jose Calderon
have been up and down.
The Raptors are a disaster defensively, with
issues rebounding as well. You may have
heard defence wins championships.
While Bosh is by far the team’s best player,
can the rest of the supporting cast help him
get to the next level? That seems dubious at
this point.
And like the coming of spring, another tradition
might just be seen in Toronto: another
all-star player heading to another team.

the trees are mature. With Pothole Creek
Marine Biology trip for
grade 8 students
By Lisa Doerksen
For the Lethbridge Journal
Five days on a 26-foot boat with 18 middle-school
students doesn’t sound like everyone’s
idea of a great time. But for G.S. Lakie
teachers Lisa McGee and Andy Tyslau, it was
the highlight of the year.
The pair recently made marine biology
relevant and exciting for a group of Grade 8
science students by taking them on a sailing
trip through the Gulf Islands. The trip is the
first of its kind of middle-school students in
Lethbridge.
“For Andy and I, the highlight was being
able to watch the kids,” says McGee, a Grade
7 math and science teacher at the middle
school.
The trip gave the students a hands-on look
at the marine biology portion of their science
curriculum - studying fresh and salt water
systems.
“The kids know the fresh water systems
pretty well,” says Tyslau, who teaches Grade 8
science. “But when you get into marine ecology,
only the kids who’ve been there have any
idea.
“And even a lot of the kids who have been
to the coast never spent time like we did
looking at what lives there.”
The five-day trip, which began March 15,
took the students to several of the Gulf Islands,
where they took shore excursions to
study the different species living in the tidal
regions.
“There are so many species that live there,
compared to what we see in land-locked Alberta,”
notes Tyslau.
The trip - born of a mutual desire by Mc-
Gee and Tyslau to bring the curriculum to
life in a meaningful way - also gave students
some great sailing experience.
Each day, students were divided into four
groups: the navigation watch, responsible
for reading maps and calculating direction,
speed and distance; the deck hands, responsible
for raising sails, swabbing the decks and
raising and dropping anchor; the galley crew,
which took care of cooking and cleaning; and
the naturalists, who kept watch for different
species of wildlife spotted from the boat.
McGee says the students started with the
Captain or a crew member guiding them, but
got the hang of it quickly.
“By the second or third day, the students
were responsible for getting from point A to
point B,” she says.
The charter company - Blue Water Adventures
- was fantastic with the students, notes
Tyslau.
Tyslau says the experience kept students on
their toes from sun up to sun down.
“They were busy all day,” he says. “By 9:30
p.m. I had 13-year-olds asking to go to bed.”
To record their experiences and adventures,
each student on the trip had his or her
own blog, which was updated almost daily.
Tyslau notes the blogs had the added bonus
of being instantly available to parents online,
allowing them to keep in touch with their
children. The group also posted pictures and
used a GPS tracking unit to broadcast their
location every 12 minutes so parents always
had up-to-date information on where the
boat was.
Since returning, both McGee and Tyslau
have been amazed at the positive feedback
from the students.
“A lot of the kids kept saying it was lifechanging,”
says Tyslau. “And you just don’t
know what’s going to come out of that. To
hear them say that is flattering, and it’s hopeful
for the future.”
McGee notes that after sharing the experience
with her Grade 7 science class, 27 out of
28 students are hoping to go on a similar trip
next year.
Even McGee - who took a similar trip when
she was a Grade 12 student - and Tyslau are
hoping to hit the high seas again.
“With the success of the trip and the positive
feedback from the students, (the school
division) is open to doing it again,” says Tyslau.
“We’re hoping there’ll be a repeat.”
MOVIE MILL
MENTIONS
By Leonard Binning
For the Lethbridge Journal
Film: Shutter Island (135min)
Rating: 14A - Coarse Language,
Disturbing Content. Not
Recommended for Children warning
Similar Movies: Spellbound; Memento
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio; Ben
Kingsley; Mark Ruffalo
Director: Martin Scorsese
Synopsis: Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio),
an up and coming Federal Marshal, is assigned
to investigate the disappearance of a
patient from Shutter Island’s Ashecliffe Hospital.
He’d been gunning for an assignment
on the island for reasons of his own -- but
before long he wonders whether he hasn’t
been brought there as part of a twisted plot
by hospital doctors whose radical treatments
range from unethical to illegal to downright
sinister.
Teddy’s code-breaking skills soon provide
a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him
access to records he suspects would break the
case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication
with the mainland, more dangerous
criminals “escape” in the confusion,
and the puzzling, improbable clues proliferate,
Teddy begins to doubt everything -- his
memory, his partner (Ruffalo), even his own
sanity.
Opinion: My initial instincts were to dislike
this film before even seeing it due to the
fact that its release date had changed several
times – and that is almost ALWAYS a bad
sign in this industry. Scorsese likes to direct
DiCaprio and this film has Leonardo front
and center in a cerebral mystery thriller. I
have spoken with people who have read the
novel, and they feel that the movie translated
well.
“Shutter Island” is dark, it is brooding, it
is a bit confusing upon initial viewing. Now,
some time after having seen the film, it provokes
deeper processing about the storylines,
the plot, the twists and the ultimate payoff .
It is a well crafted Martin Scorsese film that is
satisfying on a certain level. I believe this to
be a film, not unlike “The 6th Sense” where
you could go back and enjoy it more fully
Not for
the kids
knowing the end results. There are clues
evident throughout the development that I
should have observed initially – but due to
the strong acting performances by those involved,
I got pulled deep into the unravelling
plot. My only real complaint, other than the
disturbing content at times, was the length –
it just felt too long for my frame of mind.
Bottom Line: If you are a fan of Scorsese
and DiCaprio, and you like a good thriller/
mystery that will provoke thought - then this
effort should not disappoint you. Don’t bring
the little kids to this one.
Taking back your life!
By Chris Hibbard
Communications Coordinator
Chinook Primary Care Network
For the Lethbridge Journal
Newspapers this week detailed how Canadians
are spending more time in front of
televisions and computer screens now than
ever before. This is worrisome on many levels,
especially as obesity and diabetes rates
continue to increase as well. Every hour
spent in front a glowing screen is one less
hour spent being active and engaging in
healthy activity.
In the past, Canadians have often approached
health and wellness from a reactive
standpoint, only visiting their doctors or
hospital staff when pain or other problems
arise. This ‘conventional’ approach to healing
may treat the sickness, it’s true, but it does
little to improve our overall well-being.
The Chinook Primary Care Network and
its associated clinics and Family Practice
Teams are trying to influence this chain of
events, encouraging citizens to engage in
healthy eating habits and lifestyles while taking
a proactive and responsible approach to
daily living.
In our modern world many of us don’t
have a whole lot of extra time to spend on
leisure pursuits and activities. Nevertheless,
it’s important to remember that your health
is your health, and no one else can ‘make’ you
healthier, without your active participation.
Some of the first steps to healthy living
involve watching what you eat, making sure
that you consume enough fruits and vegetable
every day. Decreasing the amount of
red meat you consume in favour of healthier
white meat substitutes may be a wise idea. If
you smoke cigarettes or drink too much alcohol
or caffeine – think about quitting! Certain
diseases and conditions can put you at
greater risk for developing other, more serious
health problems. Exercise is another big
part of the puzzle that needs to be addressed.
From weight training and muscle development
to cardiovascular exercise and stretching,
exercise improves your quality of life –
it’s that simple.
Living a healthy lifestyle requires tremendous
determination, dedication and inner
strength, it’s true. Staying healthy can be
even more difficult, and may involve changing
your mindset regularly - from the choices
you make at the grocery store to the amount
of sunshine and fresh air you let into your
world. But the outcome is well worth the
challenge. We know today that prevention
and living a healthier life is the key, not only
to physical health but to emotional, mental
and spiritual well-being as well.
In order to promote good health on all
levels; it is important to participate and take
personal responsibility for your lifestyle
choices and well-being. An ounce of prevention
is worth more than a pound of cure. So
close that laptop for a while and shut off the
TV, you just never know what you’ll find if
out get out and walk it off. Here are some
more good general tips on how to easily take
more responsibility for your own health:
1. Once a year you should make sure you
are on track for all your health care needs.
Make a visit to your doctor a regular annual
occurrence. Depending on your age and
your sex, you should be sure that you are on
track for certain health screenings; including
blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels
and more.
2. Starting at about age 50, all adults,
both men and women, should begin getting
screened for colorectal cancer – the second
leading cause of cancer deaths in Alberta.
As well, most experts still recommend mammograms
every two years for most women
beginning at age 40, and pap smears every
three years for women between age 21 and 70.
Screening is the only way to detect colorectal,
breast, and cervical cancers early, when many
cases can still be prevented or treated.
3. Men and women should both be aware
of the risks associated with gender-related
thyroid and prostate issues. Don’t wait until
something bad happens to see your doctor.
Let the beginning of the New Year or another
date like your birthday stand as a reminder to
have a health screening.
Remember - you hold the keys to your
healthcare future, in being proactive and
taking better care of yourself. Visit www.
primarycarenetwork.com to find a local
physician and learn more about our region’s
many patient self-care programs, services
and resources that are available to assist you
on your journey to good health - taking back
your life!

HOMES Maid
Easy home makeover
(NC)—Instead of making major renovations, transform
your home by simply rejuvenating and modernizing. Hilary
Farr, designer and host of W Network’s Love It or List It, offers
six simple tips for upgrading your living space without
breaking the budget.
Update Your Furniture
Give a favourite old couch a new look. Add some throw
pillows in all sorts of colours and textures. Why not give
your old chairs a new look too? Reupholster them in a richlooking
new fabric. Make white plastic patio chairs look new
again by using Vim Cream to remove dirt and tough stains.
Add a finishing touch with new chair covers or colourful
throw pillows.
Declutter and Organize
You’d be amazed by how great a space can look once it’s
cleared of knick-knacks, paperwork and random items. Why
not plan a thorough spring-cleaning and, while you’re at it,
be ruthless and toss or give away what’s no longer needed.
Organize what’s left by investing in storage such as decorative
baskets and boxes. This will help you show off those special
pieces such as coffee tables, bookshelves and cabinets. Then
rearrange books, picture frames and vases where they can
now be seen and enjoyed.
Paint
Fresh paint on the walls can instantly open up and appear
to enlarge a room while also creating a dramatic or even subtle
change in décor. Be adventurous, but choose colours that
will enhance your furniture and floors or carpets. For that
finishing touch, paint your old furniture and picture frames
a bold new colour that complements the room.
Rejuvenate Baseboards and Walls
Baseboards frame the entire space of your home, so keep
them looking fresh and bright by vacuuming and cleaning.
Keep walls looking their best with Vim Cream, which is specially
formulated to remove scuff marks, dirt and stains.
Special Treatment for Windows
Plastic blinds and paper shades can do the job but won’t
make the most of your windows or décor. Use options which
will not only do the job but also look gorgeous. Choose roman
blinds in a beautiful fabric, wooden plantation shutters
or luxurious looking curtains. Any of these affordable options
gives long-term value—whether you plan to stay or sell.
Restore Floors
Your Way
Move In/Outs
Janitorial
Services
If your home is older, try lifting a small piece of carpeting.
You might find gorgeous hardwood floors beneath. It will be
worth the work to remove any carpet adhesives to be ready to
finally sand and finish. Rejuvenate and add a shine to existing
hardwood, laminate or linoleum flooring by using Vim Oxy-
Gel all-purpose cleaner, which leaves a fresh scent.
In last week’s issue of Head to Head, the summary portion for the Honda Pilot was replaced with the Jeep Liberty
summary portion. The Lethbridge Journal apologizes to both Honda and Jeep, and additionally like to include here
the proper summary that should have appeared.
After a major redesign last year, the Honda Pilot sees no changes for 2010, and pricing should remain about
the same. With interior space, a new muscular exterior, and a more powerful engine, test drivers say it’s a great
buy within its class. Though trucky on the outside, Pilot is as car-like as any vehicle in this class. That’s a good
thing, as this crossover’s combination of performance, utility, and passenger accommodations. The Pilot comes
in several trims, including the base LX, EX, EX-L and all-new luxurious Touring model. Though front-wheel
drive is standard, it’s available in all-wheel drive.

The Golden Rule
is play fair
When my children were young, I refereed
a lot of arguments. I remember trying to
teach them the Golden Rule: “Do to others
as you would have them do to you.” While
this principle seemed readily understandable
to my adult mind, somehow it seemed
to increase the frequency and intensity of
conflict. I didn’t get it. Finally I discussed this
principle with my kids and found out that
they interpreted the golden rule as a license
for revenge. They understood it to mean “Do
to others as they do to you.” I suppose if I had
studied more developmental psychology, I
would have realized that children think concretely.
To think abstractly is beyond their
capability at a young age.
While we can perhaps understand why
children do not practice the Golden Rule, we
have little excuse as adults. We cannot plead
ignorance!
Is the Golden Rule relevant to the marketplace?
Business coaches Stephen Kohn and
Vincent O’Connell are convinced that it is,
and cite following this principle as one of six
habits of highly effective bosses.
Following the Golden Rule is similar to
demonstrating empathy. Through empathy,
we seek to understand and enter into the experience
of others. Examining how we would
like to be treated in situations and acting accordingly
takes empathy a step further. Taking
time to consider the consequences of or
possible reactions to decisions can prevent
hasty actions and ensure a more favorable
outcome.
WAY FOR BUSINESS
By asking questions such as “How will this
decision impact my team?” or “How would
I feel if I were in their shoes?” managers can
either confirm the rightness of their decisions
or make revisions that will enable a
greater degree of buy-in.
Kohn and O’Connell identify four ways
managers can follow the Golden Rule:
First, treat employees with respect. No one
deserves to be treated rudely. Through empathic
listening and careful consideration of
other points of view, managers demonstrate
that they value each person on their team.
People feel respected when their ideas are
heard, seriously considered, and even implemented.
Second, managers need to treat everyone
fairly. Playing favorites is never justified.
Fair managers produce loyal team members.
When employees are called upon to go above
and beyond e.g. to stay late to meet a deadline,
they will more readily respond when
a history of fairness has been established.
Fair managers will seek ways to honour the
extra efforts of their team. They may even
discuss with their employees how best to do
so. While managers may not always have authority
to offer extra pay, they may be able to
let staff leave early on occasion. I recall one
staff member who was consistently required
to put in extra hours at certain seasons of the
year. I offered to pay her for the extra time
but she elected to bank hours, preferring to
take extra time off during slow periods.
Third, managers need to demonstrate honesty
in words and deeds. Kohn and McConnell
state, “Trust builds at different speeds in
people, but it deteriorates at a very rapid rate
when it is betrayed.”
Fourth, managers need to value diversity.
People are not cogs in a machine. They
come from unique family and cultural backgrounds.
They possess unique temperaments,
gifts, and aspirations. Wise managers are not
threatened by diversity. They recognize the
truth of the adage that, “if two people always
agree, one of them is irrelevant.”
Yes, the Golden Rule is relevant to the
marketplace! In the words of J.C. Penny, who
used it as the key operating principle of his
company, “The Golden Rule is still golden.”
Page 30 - LETHBRIDGE JOURNAL - WEEK OF APRIL 1, 2010
By Bill Axtell
For The Lethbridge Journal
According to the well-known late American
motivational speaker and humorist,
Charles “Fantastic” Jones, who died in 2008,
“in five years you will be the same, except
for two things: the people you meet and the
books you read.” It is a theme Jones spoke of
often throughout his lengthy career of speaking
tours which spanned nearly 60 years.
That’s where the Lethbridge Public Library
comes in. “The Library provides the only
significant other opportunity for the public
to meet people and to ‘forum’ on your ideas
with others with common interests,” Jeff
McLarty, Community Support Facilitator,
said.
McLarty explained that university students
and faculty members are “accustomed
to open discussions on campus, constantly
meeting new people and exchanging ideas,”
adding that “it’s all part of a university’s educational
opportunity.”
“But if you are not part of the university,
where else can you go to find the same
chance to share your thoughts with people
you meet? Where can you always find an
‘open forum’ available to everyone who
walks through the door?” he questioned. “It’s
the library!” he answered.
“That’s why we have chosen to provide
living room settings for our patrons,” he ex-
plained as he discussed plans for the interior
of the new Crossings Branch scheduled to
open in West Lethbridge in September.
“For example,” McLarty pointed out, “The
Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge has kindly
pledged to fund at special area to be called
the Kinsmen Fireplace Reading Area. It will
provide living room sofas gathered around
a large, state-of-the-art electric fireplace to
provide warmth and comfort for sitting to
read or for gathering for impromptu discussions.
“We’re looking for a relaxed social atmosphere”,
he said. “We’re trying to make our
customers comfortable while they enjoy the
use of the library’s extensive resources. It follows
our ‘open space’ concept,” he added.
Moreover, “you can relax while your children
play with the Library’s toys, puzzles and
games in the children’s department,” he commented.
The Library’s downtown branch provides
an extensive schedule of Theater Programs,
free of charge to everyone wishing to attend.
For example, Jeff explained, “we have
a free legal education program called ‘Law at
Lunch.’” Topics include wills, small claims,
small businesses and home based businesses,
and home legal rights.
McLarty encouraged people to “check our
website for a complete schedule of all our
planned events.” He added that the complete
schedule for the Bookmobile is also available,
which is “our primary outreach tool.”
“People would be amazed at how extensive
our library services actually are,” Jeff pointed
out, also mentioning, as an example, that a
family can check out a family pass to the Galt
Museum at no cost beyond the annual fee for
a library card.
All these services “are among the numerous
reasons that people willing to support
