DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY <strong>in</strong> APPLIED THEOLOGY<br />

With SPECIALIZATION <strong>in</strong> FORMATIVE COUNSELING<br />

Course Description<br />

The ladderized program <strong>Doctor</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Philosophy</strong> (specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Formative Counsel<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

<strong>in</strong>tends to serve the follow<strong>in</strong>g clientele: religious education teachers/catechists, campus<br />

m<strong>in</strong>isters, counselors/catechists, counselors/spiritual directors, sem<strong>in</strong>ary formators, and<br />

formators <strong>in</strong> religious life. It provides formators <strong>with</strong> a venue for an advanced learn<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the processes as well as demands <strong>of</strong> formative spiritual guidance <strong>with</strong><strong>in</strong> the<br />

religious life aided by advanced psychological tools <strong>in</strong> counsell<strong>in</strong>g and relevant <strong>in</strong>terventions.<br />

Formative counsel<strong>in</strong>g/ spiritual direction as a field <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional work blend religious<br />

education, theology, scripture, and spirituality <strong>with</strong> guidance and counsel<strong>in</strong>g. It is grounded on<br />

formative spirituality, a holistic approach to the arts and sciences, which <strong>in</strong>cludes the arts,<br />

theology, scripture, physical and social science education, guidance and counsel<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Dist<strong>in</strong>guished from ma<strong>in</strong>stream counsell<strong>in</strong>g psychology, formative counselees /directees <strong>in</strong> this<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e are led to a deep and authentic awareness <strong>of</strong> themselves <strong>in</strong> relation to the Div<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

other persons, and the physical universe.<br />

Course Requirements<br />

To f<strong>in</strong>ish the program the student has to complete a total <strong>of</strong> 94 academic units<br />

distributed <strong>in</strong> two components: the Masters level courses lead<strong>in</strong>g to a Masters degree <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Theology</strong> (<strong>with</strong> concentration <strong>in</strong> Formative Counsel<strong>in</strong>g) and, the <strong>Doctor</strong>al Level courses<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g to a PhD <strong>in</strong> <strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Theology</strong> (specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Formative Counsel<strong>in</strong>g). The Masters level<br />

constitutes 44 units represent<strong>in</strong>g basic and major academic courses. The doctorate component<br />

comprises 50 units represent<strong>in</strong>g basic, major and elective courses. The heavy academic load is<br />

also the result <strong>of</strong> governmental requirements relat<strong>in</strong>g to the licens<strong>in</strong>g and practice <strong>of</strong><br />

counsell<strong>in</strong>g which renders the student eligible for public practice after the Board exam<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

On top <strong>of</strong> these course requirements, the dissertation writ<strong>in</strong>g course is given 12 units.<br />

Non-Course Requirement<br />

The student, upon completion <strong>of</strong> the Masters level courses (30 units), must undergo a<br />

written comprehensive exams <strong>in</strong> five areas (Scriptures, Moral <strong>Theology</strong>, Liturgy and Sacraments,<br />

Religious Education, and Dogma or Systematic <strong>Theology</strong>). After the course and non-course<br />

requirements are completed and passed, the student may now request for university<br />

certification <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g completion <strong>of</strong> the basic requirements for the degree Master <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Philosophy</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Theology</strong> <strong>with</strong> specialization <strong>in</strong> Formative Counsel<strong>in</strong>g (Non-Thesis). The<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> this non-course requirement will allow the student to take the PhD level<br />

academic requirements <strong>in</strong> formative counsel<strong>in</strong>g. Upon completion <strong>of</strong> the PhD-level academic<br />

courses, the student shall then take the second and f<strong>in</strong>al comprehensive exams prior to<br />

dissertation writ<strong>in</strong>g. After pass<strong>in</strong>g the PhD level comprehensive exams the student shall then be<br />

allowed to enrol <strong>in</strong> a 12-unit dissertation writ<strong>in</strong>g course the follow<strong>in</strong>g term.<br />

Foundations <strong>of</strong> <strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Theology</strong> I: Basic Realities and Process (APT101M )<br />

3 units<br />

With<strong>in</strong> the framework <strong>of</strong> the mutual <strong>in</strong>teraction between the Judaeo-Christian Tradition and<br />

contemporary human experience, the fundamental notions <strong>of</strong> Revelation and Faith shall be dealt <strong>with</strong>.<br />

The process <strong>of</strong> “do<strong>in</strong>g theology”, particularly <strong>with</strong> cultural resources, will be expla<strong>in</strong>ed and illustrated.<br />

Trends <strong>in</strong> Biblical Studies: OT (APT201M )<br />

3 units<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the contemporary trends <strong>in</strong> the study <strong>of</strong> the bible <strong>in</strong> the area <strong>of</strong> the New Testament. The<br />

course is an updated overview <strong>of</strong> scholarly f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs on the subject and their relevance to<br />

contemporary issues.<br />

Trends Biblical Studies: NT<br />

(APT202M)<br />

3 units<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the contemporary trends <strong>in</strong> the study <strong>of</strong> the bible <strong>in</strong> the area <strong>of</strong> the New Testament. The<br />

course is an updated overview <strong>of</strong> scholarly f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs on the subject and their relevance to<br />

contemporary issues.<br />

Do<strong>in</strong>g Christology <strong>in</strong> a Cultural Context (APT204M)<br />

3 units<br />

The present-day understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the identity and the significance <strong>of</strong> Jesus is no longer conf<strong>in</strong>ed to<br />

Western philosophical categories. Follow<strong>in</strong>g the general renewal <strong>in</strong> theology <strong>in</strong>spired by Vatican II,<br />

various approaches to Christology have been developed. One <strong>of</strong> these, the cultural approach, seeks to<br />

<strong>in</strong>culturate the Christian Faith <strong>in</strong> Jesus Christ <strong>in</strong> the different cultures <strong>of</strong> peoples. The course first<br />

analyzes the first disciples’ experience <strong>of</strong> Jesus <strong>in</strong> order to ascerta<strong>in</strong> the theological and hermeneutical<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> it and to <strong>in</strong>dicate the various stages the experience underwent. Knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

these pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and stages will then provide guidance <strong>in</strong> articulat<strong>in</strong>g a “Christology” utiliz<strong>in</strong>g local<br />

cultural categories.<br />

Foundations <strong>of</strong> Moral Life<br />

This course covers various moral problems <strong>in</strong> the contemporary world and the challenges they pose.<br />

However, a specific slant is given to Asian context. The course will provide occasions to apply the<br />

moral pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>in</strong> the fundamental moral theology <strong>in</strong> its various fields: sexual, medical and social<br />

issues. It will concentrate on analysis <strong>of</strong> the different moral cases and the proper pastoral paths<br />

possible for the cases.<br />

A Lay – Centered Church<br />

The course is a historical, scriptural and systematic study <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> the laity <strong>in</strong> the Church. The<br />

course attempts to f<strong>in</strong>d a way to give dignity to ord<strong>in</strong>ary Christians who represent n<strong>in</strong>ety-n<strong>in</strong>e percent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Church. It will also experiment on possible avenues open to lay people to exercise creative<br />

m<strong>in</strong>istries <strong>in</strong> the church. Furthermore, the course is a journey to self-discovery. It allows participants<br />

to discover their gifts and talents that are beneficial <strong>in</strong> a lay-centered church. In addition, this course is<br />

also a journey to spirituality.<br />

Formative Counsel<strong>in</strong>g / Spiritual Direction (APT602M)<br />

4 units<br />

This course will stress formative spirituality: the blend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> psychology, culture, theology, and<br />

religious experience. It will emphasize the blend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> formative counsel<strong>in</strong>g / spiritual direction and<br />

can be helpful for religious educators, guidance counselors, and formation personnel <strong>in</strong> Religious Life,<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>aries and societies <strong>of</strong> Apostolic Life.<br />

Personality Theories (APT603M)<br />

3 units<br />

This course will exam<strong>in</strong>e the different theories <strong>of</strong> personality presented by different authors. It seeks<br />

to discover what these theories have to <strong>of</strong>fer for better understand<strong>in</strong>g the uniqueness and the<br />

plurality <strong>of</strong> personalities. It will necessarily <strong>in</strong>clude biographies, basic terms and concepts, assessment<br />

methods and therapies, and references to further read<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Techniques <strong>of</strong> Formative Counsel<strong>in</strong>g and Spiritual Accompaniment (APT604M)<br />

3 units<br />

Formators learn various psycho-spiritual approaches and techniques <strong>in</strong> formative counsel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and spiritual accompaniment. It seeks to help develop the qualities and skill <strong>of</strong> an effective cojourneyer<br />

and spiritual accompanier.<br />

History <strong>of</strong> Christian Spirituality (REV605M)<br />

3 units<br />

This course will present a history <strong>of</strong> the various k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> Christian Spirituality developments from<br />

the time <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ to the present. A formative approach will be used <strong>in</strong> this course.<br />

Assessment Tools <strong>in</strong> Formative Counsel<strong>in</strong>g (APT606M)<br />

4 units<br />

Formative study <strong>of</strong> the different assessment tools, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g standardized tests for formative<br />

counsel<strong>in</strong>g. It equips formators <strong>with</strong> skills to select, adm<strong>in</strong>ister, score, <strong>in</strong>terpret and evaluate<br />

these measures for better accompaniment.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> schools <strong>of</strong> philosophy and psychology <strong>in</strong> their theories regard<strong>in</strong>g religious<br />

development and values formation. Specifically the psychological theories <strong>of</strong> Erikson, Kohlberg,<br />

Hall and Fowler vis a vis Filip<strong>in</strong>o culture, Psychology and Philosophical orientations will be<br />

spiritual accompaniment us<strong>in</strong>g the psycho-spiritual approach. Ethical considerations are<br />

Advanced Personality Theory and Spirituality (APT322P)<br />

empirical approaches. The socio-cultural aspect <strong>of</strong> personality <strong>in</strong> the context <strong>of</strong> formative<br />

Formators study the characteristics <strong>of</strong> the different psychopathologies, their etiology, prognosis<br />

and treatment. Formators learn to make concrete plans for better accompaniment.<br />

Formators learn the different assessment tools, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g standardized paper-and-pencil tests<br />

used to assess personality, <strong>in</strong>telligence, and other psycho-spiritual variables useful <strong>in</strong> formative<br />

counsel<strong>in</strong>g. Formators are equipped <strong>with</strong> skills to select, adm<strong>in</strong>ister, score, <strong>in</strong>terpret, and<br />

Advanced Formative Group Process and Psychotherapy (APT325P)<br />

Formators are given the opportunity (a) to make a review and survey <strong>of</strong> the different theories<br />

applied <strong>in</strong> group formative counsel<strong>in</strong>g ; (b) to experience these theories <strong>in</strong> a small growth group<br />

<strong>in</strong> class; and (c) to facilitate a small pastoral growth group outside class. Formators learn how to<br />

use the Structured Learn<strong>in</strong>g Experiences (SLE) and Process-Observation-Analysis (POA) that are<br />

important <strong>in</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g groups.<br />

It looks <strong>in</strong>to the psychodynamics <strong>of</strong> family systems, the dysfunctional manifestation <strong>of</strong> family<br />

crises <strong>in</strong> the socio-cultural sett<strong>in</strong>g, and the pastoral opportunities for car<strong>in</strong>g, heal<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

Formators explore the contemporary issues that the psychotherapist would encounter dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

therapy and spiritual accompaniment and lean to diagnose and make treatment plan.<br />
