Summer Camp<br />

Thank you for making Camp Chief Hector <strong>YMCA</strong> an important part of your life. Enclosed you will find information about the<br />

2013 Leadership-in-Training programs. We have introduced a new format for the leadership programs this year. Please read<br />

the in-depth program descriptions attached to this email to ensure you are familiar with the changes. Application<br />

instructions and an <strong>application</strong> are included below. We hope you will be able to be part of our upcoming summer.<br />

Leadership-in-Training Program Options Overview<br />

Includes 7 days of training and 13 days of co –counselor volunteer leadership<br />

Sac Dene Leadership-in-Training<br />

40 day canoe trip on the Mackenzie River<br />

6 days of co-counselor leadership at Camp Chief Hector <strong>YMCA</strong><br />

o July 7 – Aug 30<br />

Hike Leadership-in-Training<br />

Includes an 8 day backpacking trip<br />

Open to campers who completed a Standard <strong>LIT</strong> program earlier in the summer<br />

o August 18 - 30<br />

Application Instructions<br />

Selection for <strong>LIT</strong> options is done through an <strong>application</strong> and interview process.<br />

On your <strong>application</strong>, you must specify a first and second choice for programs<br />

Submit a resume and letter of intent with your <strong>application</strong>, adapting your letter to address the goals and<br />

expectations of the <strong>LIT</strong> program that you are applying for<br />

Please address the following questions in your letter of intent:<br />

1. Why is participating in the <strong>LIT</strong> program important to you?<br />

2. Why do you enjoy working with children and youth?<br />

3. What goals do you have for yourself in the <strong>LIT</strong> program?<br />

4. How have you helped to create a positive and caring camp community?<br />

NOTE: It is important that all candidates complete the entire <strong>LIT</strong> <strong>application</strong> including the resume and letter of intent, to<br />

assist us with the interview process. <strong>LIT</strong> programs are for participants who will be seventeen years of age by November 15,<br />

2013.

Important Dates<br />

The <strong>application</strong> deadline for all <strong>LIT</strong> programs is Dec 10, 2012. Once your <strong>application</strong> has been received, our registration<br />

office will contact you to book an interview time. Out-of-town applicants will be interviewed by phone. Interviews will be<br />

conducted on January 12 and 13, 2013. Applicants will be notified with the results by email on January 18, 2013.<br />

Cancellation Policy<br />

Cancellations received on or before April 15, 2013 are entitled to a full refund excluding a $50 processing fee. Cancellations<br />

received between April 15, 2013 and more than one month prior to the camp start date are entitled to a refund of 75% of<br />

the total camp fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received less than one month prior to the camp start date.<br />

Cancellations for medical reasons after April 15, 2013 are entitled to a full refund excluding $100. Written notice of the<br />

cancellation and a doctor’s note are necessary in order to qualify for a refund.<br />

Financial Assistance<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>Calgary</strong> does not turn away anyone due to financial circumstance. If you would like to discuss financial assistance,<br />

please call the city office at 403-269-6156 or 1-866-430-9622 for an Opportunity Fund <strong>application</strong> or more information.<br />

Payment Options (registrations will be processed once confirmation of acceptance to a <strong>LIT</strong> program is confirmed with the<br />

applicant’s family)<br />

Pay full amount upon registration<br />

$150 upon registration, remainder by one payment April 17, 2013<br />

$150 upon registration, remainder by monthly payments 4 th of each month until April 4<br />

$150 upon registration, remainder by monthly payments 17 th of each month until April 17<br />

We accept: Cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Cheque (payable to: Camp Chief Hector <strong>YMCA</strong>)<br />

Application Submission<br />

<strong>LIT</strong> <strong>application</strong> can be submitted by clicking the SUBMIT BY EMAIL button found at the end of <strong>application</strong>. If you are<br />

experiencing difficulties, you can ‘Save as’ (please notice that the ‘Save’ function is not appropriate in this situation) and<br />

attach it to an email. Applications can be emailed to nriterma@calgary.ymca.ca.<br />

CAMPER’S COMMITIMENT<br />

Leaders-in-Training campers come with the intention of learning the challenges and rewards of becoming a staff member at Camp Chief Hector<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong>. As such, campers who register for <strong>LIT</strong> accept and support that some behaviors are encouraged and some behaviors are not tolerated.<br />

Communicating responsibly, acting with initiative, being positive and team-oriented, using critical thinking and maintaining one’s energy while<br />

engaged in challenging circumstances are behaviors that are encouraged.<br />

Possessing or using tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs or degrading published material, AND/OR being passive, oppositional, non-contributing or<br />

behaving disrespectfully towards other campers, staff members or visitors are behaviors that are not acceptable. In keeping with the Camper’s<br />

Commitment, <strong>LIT</strong> campers who choose to behave in ways listed above as not acceptable will be asked to leave the program.<br />
