that they tip their NT neck into the<br />

ahead and have the luthier do this for<br />
you and live happily ever after. And if<br />
one day you change your mind, or the<br />
next day you don’t like it, take it back<br />
to him and have him try something<br />
else. It’s the beauty of the NT neck.<br />

I have been playing and reading<br />
about guitars, both acoustic and<br />
electric, for over 40 years, but I have<br />
never — I mean NEVER — heard<br />
or read anything about soundhole<br />
size and its effect on acoustic<br />
guitars. Given all the other minute<br />
variations that guitar builders and<br />
players discuss, why no mention of<br />
soundhole size or rarely so?<br />

Mark, there is a lot of talk about it<br />
in builder circles. It can change the<br />
resonant frequency of a guitar. There<br />
is the famous Clarence White Martin<br />
guitar that is now owned and played<br />
by Tony Rice. That guitar was made<br />
famous because the soundhole was<br />
worn out so Clarence enlarged it to<br />
the first rosette ring to make it round<br />
again. The tone changed slightly.<br />
It’s a good guitar, regardless of the<br />
soundhole size, but many builders copy<br />
that guitar, making a larger soundhole<br />
like it now has. Bottom line: It’s easier<br />
to make a guitar with a standard-size<br />
hole and work changes into the guitar<br />
elsewhere. Thus, people don’t talk<br />
about it much.<br />
I was fortunate enough to spend<br />
time at your factory and pick out<br />
wood for what turned out to be<br />
an amazing BTO. I chose sinker<br />
redwood because it has tonal<br />
properties similar to cedar but with<br />
more volume, bringing it a bit closer<br />
to the volume spruce delivers. (I<br />
added Adirondack spruce bracing in<br />
the hope of adding a bit more zing<br />
as well.) I wanted to know more<br />
about this wood, such as its break-<br />
Well, Jeff, I think redwood’s breakin<br />
time is about the same as spruce<br />
and cedar. If you play it, and as time<br />
goes by, it will get better. To me, these<br />
are moot points, because if a wood<br />
sounds different when it’s new, it will<br />
sound different when it’s broken-in,<br />
too. The journey to break-in isn’t really<br />
important to me, because it’s all good,<br />
all along the way. As far as scarcity is<br />
concerned, this redwood we’ve been<br />
using all comes from one tree. It’s a<br />
big tree, and the wood comes to us<br />
from a supplier near the source. I’m<br />
not completely sure how scarce it is,<br />
because they keep cutting wood from<br />
it and sending it our way. There have<br />
been at least a thousand sets from it<br />
so far.<br />
I’ve got a beautiful 814ce-LTD<br />
(spruce top with walnut back and<br />
sides) that I purchased new just<br />
over three years ago. When I bought<br />
the guitar I thought the action was<br />
a little high, but the sound of the<br />
instrument was too compelling to<br />
leave it in the shop. Three years<br />
later the sound is actually getting<br />
stronger, but I think the playability<br />
could be improved by adjusting the<br />
action. I’m wondering about the<br />
wisdom of having the saddle filed<br />
down versus having a new one<br />
made. There is a very good <strong>Taylor</strong>authorized<br />
repair technician not<br />
too far away, who I’m sure could do<br />
either job, but before I go to him I’d<br />
be interested in your thoughts.<br />

Geordie, the great thing about your<br />
guitar is your NT neck. That neck can<br />
be reset to lower your action, and<br />
It’s called satinwood. It comes from<br />
Africa. That was a particularly nice<br />
batch. It makes a nice guitar, but isn’t<br />
typically used, thus is hard to find a<br />
second time around. Sometimes a<br />
batch of wood just falls in our laps and<br />
we go with it. That’s what happened<br />
with this wood.<br />

When will the GS Mini be available for us lefties?<br />
Also, will the pickup designed for the Mini work in<br />
a left-hand guitar since the strings are 180 degrees<br />
different?<br />

We’re very committed to left-hand versions of all our<br />
guitars. I imagine we’ll get the tooling done for GS<br />
Mini lefties later this year. The pickup will work just<br />
fine, no problem.
