<strong>St</strong>age 1: The Egg<br />
1. Butterflies lay their eggs on leaves because the soon-to-be caterpillar will<br />
have a food source available.<br />
2. <strong>Butterfly</strong> eggs come in many shapes and colors. The shapes include spherical,<br />
oval, and pod-shaped; the colors include white, green, and yellow.<br />
<strong>St</strong>age 2: Larva (Caterpillar)<br />
1. Not very long. About two weeks to a month.<br />
2. The larva constantly eats and grows very quickly.<br />
<strong>St</strong>age 3: Pupa (Chrysalis)<br />
1. During this stage, the caterpillar tissues are broken down and the adult<br />
insect's structures are formed.<br />

<strong>St</strong>age 4: Adult <strong>Butterfly</strong><br />
1. When the butterfly first comes out from the chrysalis, both of the wings are<br />
going to be soft and folded against its body.<br />
2. Adults can only eat liquid food through their straw-like proboscis. Most<br />
butterflies only sip flower nectar, liquids from rotting fruit, mushy bird dung,<br />
and mineral-rich water from puddles.
