INTRODUCTION.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> many linguistic families in California most are confined<br />

to single areas, but <strong>the</strong> large Moquelumnan or <strong>Miwok</strong> family<br />

is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> few exceptions, in that <strong>the</strong> people speaking its various<br />

dialects occupy three distinct areas. <strong>The</strong>se three areas, while<br />

actually quite near toge<strong>the</strong>r, are at considerable distances from<br />

one ano<strong>the</strong>r as compared with <strong>the</strong> areas occupied by any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r linguistic families that are separated.<br />

<strong>The</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three <strong>Miwok</strong> areas, which may for convenience<br />

be called <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Coast or Lake area, is situated<br />

in <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn extremity <strong>of</strong> Lake county <strong>and</strong> just touches, at its<br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn boundary, <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rnmost end <strong>of</strong> Clear lake . This
