Scouts Collect Four Tons of Food for Hebron Interfaith
Ross Silberquit (left) and Billy Czaja, who served as the
project coordinators for the Scouting for Food annual drive,
were all smiles at the end of the day, leaving the Food Bank
well stocked for a couple of months.
The annual Scouting for Food project, held Saturday, April 12,
was amazingly successful! Approximately four tons of food was
collected for the Hebron Interfaith Human Services’ (HIHS)
Food Bank, thanks to the generosity of Hebron residents.
This event is a joint project between Hebron Pack 28 Cub
Scouts and Hebron Troop 28 Boy Scouts. The Cub Scouts
and their parents were primarily responsible for distributing
food bags to every Hebron mailbox. “Cub Scouts from Pack
28, ranging from the first through fourth grades, delivered
the Scouting for Food bags to their neighbors, covering nearly
every home in Hebron. The role that these young Scouts play
in conducting this community service project is important, and
the Scouts are pleased to help with this initiative,” said Karen
Desjardins, Pack 28 Food Drive Committee Chair.
“Scouting for Food is a service project that many troops have.
The pre-printed Scouting for Food bags are provided by Shop
Rite for the Northeast Region Boy Scouts of America,” said
Billy Czaja, one of the project’s two coordinators.
According to Terry Young, Director of HIHS, the good news
is that the donations will last 2-3 months. The bad news is
the four tons of food will only last 2-3 months.
Ross Silberquit,
who also coordinated
the massive effort,
said, “When we first
got there, we were
amazed to find the
shelves at the food
bank almost bare.”
But six hours later,
the shelves were full,
and HIHS was ready
for business.
Young had nothing
but praise for the
Scouts and parents
When the Scouts of Hebron’s Pack 28
and Troop 28 first arrived at the HIHS
Food Bank on April 12, they found
most of the shelves close to empty.
who participated in the food drive. “The boys were unbelievable;
they were so well-coordinated and organized. The place
was spotless when they left, and the food was well-placed on
the shelves. Even the tuna fish was organized by brand!” she
said.
“If you include all the planning work to lay out the routes and
driving maps, putting out the food bags, collecting the donations
and placing the items on the shelves, the total project
involved 100 Scouts, 93 adults, and 449 volunteer hours,”
said Czaja.
HIHS Food Bank currently serves about 100 Hebron families.
“I can’t say enough about these young men and how their efforts
have positively impacted our Hebron community,” said
Young. “We’re very grateful not only for their work on this
food drive but also the inspiration they provide. In the end,
they demonstrate the concept of neighbors helping neighbors
through their actions.”
Smart Computing Begins With Backing UP Your Computer!
Beep, Beep, Beep…
I’m glad you decided to read this article especially if you use a
computer. The hard drive is where your important information,
pictures and data are stored. Consider this:
It is not, IF your hard drive will fail, it is WHEN!
The information in this article is important and if practiced can
ensure many years of happy computing.
Some hard drives last for years and can out live the rest of the
computer’s parts, while others fail after a week of operation and
even the first few hours of operation. It is not uncommon for a
new computer to have its hard drive crash within days or weeks
You’re NOT
backing up
your
data??
Don’t wait
until
disaster comes !
• Hard Drive Crashes • Viruses
• Hackers • Data Corruption
• Fire • Flood • Natural Disasters
• Disgruntled Employees • Theft
• Human Error
A swarm of common data loss risks
threaten to destroy your data instantly:
Your computer files are the lifeblood of your
business, and your hard drive is the keeper of all
your hard work.
Set up your FREE 30-day
trial today!
of using it. It doesn’t seem to matter whether the computer is
used a lot or sparingly; the hard drive is always a gamble.
A hard drive has moving parts that can wear out and break up
and get “out of sync.” It is always spinning, reading and writing.
Hard drives in laptops take a beating just being moved around
while they are working.
You need to be aware that you can lose your valuable information,
music, pictures, and data in a split second.
It is possible to recover data from a failed hard drive. We Computer
Tamers can often recover the data from a failed hard drive
providing the entire mechanical assembly hasn’t broken up.
If that happens, there are services that will rebuild the drive.
We Computer Tamers can refer you to companies that “work
miracles” in recovering data. Of course these services cost thousands
of dollars. Our technicians use a device that connects to
the failed hard drive and a sophisticated collection of programs
that intelligently recover the data and stores it on one of our
servers. This process costs hundreds instead of thousands.
To avoid the costs of recovering data from a failed hard drive we
recommend that you backup your important data on a regular
basis; this includes your music and pictures. You can do this with
a USB thumb drive, CD-R, DVD, an external USB hard drive,
or an online service. You can investigate an economical service for
backing up data by visiting our website – TheComputerTamers.
com. Businesses need to pay close attention and check out the
options for backing up their data. I’ve seen grown businessmen
and businesswomen breakdown and cry when they’ve learned
that their important business data cannot be recovered from a
failed hard drive.
To avoid a nervous breakdown or the cost of reconstituting your
information, begin the habit of backing up your data. Everyone
should do it so that they don’t lose valuable and irreplaceable
pictures, your music collection, and documents.
A local computer service center can help you understand how
to backup your computer and offer suggestions for media,
frequency and what to backup. Storing your backup files is as
important as backing up regularly. You must protect the backedup
data by storing it in a safe and fireproof location; preferably
offsite, at a friend’s house for example.
You don’t have a “time machine” to use to go back in time to get
your data back, but you can think ahead and institute a routine
to backup your data.
REMEMBER IT IS NOT IF YOUR COMPUTER’S HARD
DRIVE WILL FAIL, BUT WHEN IT WILL FAIL.
Consider yourself warned! Backing up your computer makes
good sense and takes only a few minutes. So form a habit of
doing it. Anything else is taking unnecessary chances.
Visit a local computer service center and learn more about safe
computing. I know our technicians are ready and willing to
help you understand how to enjoy happy computing through
safe computing and regular maintenance.
Christ Lutheran Early Childhood Center has a new Traditional Preschool teacher.
Miss Cheryl Anderson reads to the children
in the 4 year old Traditional Preschool
class at Christ Lutheran Early Childhood
Center in Hebron.
Miss Cheryl Anderson
joined the
CLECC team in
July of 2006. She
has been teaching
the Pre-Kindergarten
program and
is currently transitioning
into being
the lead teacher of
the Traditional Preschool
program. In addition to Cheryl becoming the new lead
teacher of the program, CLECC has made some changes to the
4 year old class. Starting in the fall of 2008 the 4 year old Traditional
Preschool class will be from 9:00 to 1:00. The students
will be able to stay for lunch and get a better idea of what a day
in Kindergarten will be like.
Arts in Religious Education. One of her favorite things about
her job is “enjoying ‘messy’ projects of cooking, art and science
while incorporating language and math skills.” Cheryl says that
she “has been blessed with the opportunity to provide children
with a classroom full of adventures from dramatic play to story
writing to block sculptures.” Outside of CLECC, Cheryl is a
Youth Group leader, she was a Sunday school superintendent
for four years and she is a Confirmation class leader.
We at CLECC count ourselves as blessed to have Cheryl on our
team. We encourage you to learn more about Cheryl and all of
our programs by stopping by our center or visiting our website
www.clshebron.org.
Cheryl is a lifetime resident of Colchester. She has an Associates
degree in Early Childhood Education and is going into her fifteenth
year of experience in Early Childhood Education. Cheryl’s
Bachelors degree is in Psychology with a focus on Children and
Youth. Currently, she is working toward a Masters degree in
People have probably wondered what that
circle of rocks just east of Chestnut Hill Road
represented. That is, if they could even see
the odd arrangement!
It’s Hebron’s “Old Town Pound,” an almost
forgotten landmark that is an important
part of our town’s history. Most Connecticut
towns at one point in time had a “town
pound” to hold errant cattle and livestock
until they could be reclaimed by their owners
(usually after paying a fine.) It was also a
way of saving the grass on the Green, which
the hungry animals were more than happy
to eat all the way to the roots.
Thanks to documentation given to Hebron Historical Society
by the family of the late Donald Robinson, current Society
members learned the pound and the parcel of land it sits on
were deeded to the Town of Hebron on July 24, 1989 by Rod
McCorrison and Stonecroft Associates.
Once it was confirmed that the town still owned the pound,
Nicholas Aubin quickly volunteered to restore the area for his
Eagle project. Working closely with the Society and the Board
of Selectmen, Aubin began planning late last year. In addition,
he also worked with Bill Drinkuth and Mimi Tyler since the
pound abuts one of Mohegan Land Trust’s nature trails.
Old Town Pound Comes to Life
Donna McCalla
Troop 28 Scouts, leaders and local
residents were pleased with the
results of their labor. Hebron’s Old
Town Pound is now ready to receive
visitors curious about this almost
forgotten landmark.
On Saturday, May 10, Aubin and his crew
of fellow Troop 28 Scouts cleared the overgrown
bramble bushes and trees that have
obscured the pound for several decades. In
addition, those portions of the stone wall
that had fallen have been restored, with assistance
from local expert Tom Clark, and
a replica gate now replaces the old gate that
had fallen to wood rot. Fred Brehant and
Country Carpenters worked with Aubin to
build the new gate by hand. The Scouts
also laid wood chips inside and around the
perimeter of the monument, thanks to the
efforts of Andy Tierney, Director of Public
Works, in providing the chips and crushed
stone for the pathway to the pound.
“I live in the neighborhood,” said Aubin, “and I’ve walked by
the pound often throughout the years. It was the perfect Eagle
project for me.”
Aubin and his family, David, Caroline and Parker, plan to
formally open the landmark to the public on June 21, the same
day as residents and visitors celebrate Hope Valley Neighborhood
Day. Small – but friendly – animals will be on hand to
recreate the original purpose and use of a town pound. Sitting
just next to the Jeremy Brook, it’s a peaceful site, and well worth
the visit.
Two Hebron Homes Designated as Historic Properties
On May 1, the Hebron Board of Selectmen voted unanimously
to modify local Ordinance 94-1, naming the Cyr house at 192
Hope Valley Road and the Albert house at 233 Millstream Road
as local historic properties.
The designations, proposed last year by the Hebron Historic
Properties Commission, conclude a lengthy process outlined
by Connecticut State Statutes Section 7: 147.
“As stated at the public hearing, this first step in designating
residential homes as historic properties is truly a significant
advancement in preserving Hebron history,” said Selectman
Mark Stuart.
The property at 192 Hope Valley Road has been owned by
Craig F. and Jean E. Cyr since 1974. Dating back to Nathaniel
Phelps, Jr., the house is thought to have been built around 1734.
Phelps was elected the town’s first “innkeeper” in 1712, and
his father, Nathaniel Phelps, Sr., was one of Hebron’s original
founders in 1704.
Keith and Jennifer Albert, with their children Daniela and
Shane, proudly display the new historic properties plaque on
their Millstread Road home.
“We’re very pleased to nominate two residential properties for
the first time as historic properties,” said Deena Watson, Chairman
of Hebron Historic Properties Commission. “There have
been many misunderstandings about what historic designation
means, but it does not mean that paint color, window replacement,
and types of roof shingles, for example, are subject to
scrutiny. Local historic designation is designed to preserve the
street view of the home for future generations. Hopefully, other
owners of historical homes will follow the Cyrs and the Alberts
in applying for local historic designation.”
Craig and Jean Cyr have spent many years restoring their home
on Hope Valley Road. Recently, they built an addition to the
house that is in keeping with the historic nature of the house.
The Cyrs are also known for producing spring sweets at their
Hope Valley Sugar Farm, also located on their property.
“We are very pleased to have this designation,” said the Cyrs.
“Hebron has been our home for decades, and we are committed
to doing our part in preserving our town’s valuable history.”
Equally excited about historic designation were Keith G. and Jennifer
M. Albert, owners of the property at 233 Millstream Road.
“I’m here tonight because obviously I support this designation,”
said Albert at the public hearing. “It’s very exciting to know our
home will be recognized for its role in Hebron’s history.”
The Albert house also dates back to the 18 th century, and was
originally built by the Tarbox family. At least two important
mills were located on the original property; Millstream Road
in general was a thriving source of commerce for early Hebron.
The Alberts purchased the property from Barbara Leary in 2004.
Like Mrs. Leary, the Alberts keep horses on the property, and
in 2006, moved a historic barn from South Windsor to their
property, where it was carefully restored.
Washington Phillips- Born to Sing the Gospel
There are few songs covered
by the many artists as
diverse as: Vince Gill, Ry
Cooder, Barry McGuire,
the 77’s, Sister Rosetta
Tharpe, Jimmy Scott,
Jorma Kaukonenen and
Mike Bloomfield. Yet,
Washington Phillips, the
man who wrote and originally
recorded the widelyrecorded
“Denomination
Blues” lived and died in relative obscurity. Since its release the
CD, ‘I Was Born To Sing The Gospel - The Complete Recorded
Works Of Washington Phillips’ has been a steady seller for blues
specialist Yazoo Records. His haunting and elegant approach
to denominationalism remains in the repertoires of numerous
blues, folk and rock artists.
George Washington Phillips was born to sharecroppers Houston
Phillips and Emma Titus. He started life as a farmer and was
then called as an itinerant preacher. In 1927 the legendary A& R
man, Frank Walker (who discovered Blind Willie Johnson) was
traveling through Texas looking for talent to record and came
across a performer who, he later admitted, fascinated him - a
gospel singer who accompanied himself on the rare, zither-like
dolceola.
The two oldest recordings on the CD are: Rev Charles A Tindley’s
popular, “Take Your Burden To The Lord And Leave It There;”
and another popular song of 1920’s, “Lift Him Up, That’s All,”
a song based on the Gospel of John and sung to the melody of
an older hymn, “The Great Reaping Day”.
The brisk sales of this record resulted in the recording of what
is arguably Phillip’s most well known song “Denomination
Blues,”( recorded in 12/1927). A highlight of this song is the
The Hebronian March 2008 Page 10
practice of calling the Denomination Train (the calling out of a
string of various religious groups by name). The melody of this
song is the same melody of WC Handy’s Hesitation Blues- a
melody which Handy claimed to have written. The true origin
of the melody is not known. What is known is that Denomination
Blues created a new style of music which would be called
the “Holy Blues”.
In 1928, Phillips recorded another original song based again on
John’s Gospel ,”I Am Born To Preach The Gospel”. Beginning
with a spoken introduction, he borrowed the tune of “I Wouldn’t
Mind Dying” for the refrain. The song is highlighted by Phillips
sermonizing on poorly educated and backsliding preachers. It
was during this same recording session that Phillips recorded
a personal favorite, “What are They Doing in Heaven Today.”
Check out Little Jimmy Scott’s unique jazz version.
Arguably Phillip’s greatest musical triumph is the emotional “I
Had A Good Mother And Father.” Phillip’s poetry combined
with the sound of the dolceola and his unique falsetto singing
worked to create a Gospel masterpiece. Sadly, this song received
the least exposure. It was not even released for decades later. Soon
after his final session, Phillips disappeared. It was reported that
he had died and until recently his death was accepted as fact.
Recent research by Michael Corcoran shows that Phillips did
not die. He simply retired as a farmer and lived on until the age
of 74 when he died in 1954 from head injuries. One might say
that Washington Phillips knew that God had given him eighteen
songs – that he didn’t want to take a chance and record
a nineteenth. Do yourself a favor and listen to those 18 songs
on “I Was Born to Sing the Gospel - the Complete Recorded
Works of Washington Phillips.
The music of Washington Phillips can be heard on the Festival
of Gospel Music.
Elementary Students Learn More
About Hebron’s Early History
Donna McCalla
What an exciting day for students at Hebron Elementary School
on May 1 st !
Chris Ambrose, a substitute teacher at both Hebron Elementary
and Gilead Hill schools, gave a presentation on Hebron’s early
history to grades 3-6. The event was held in the multipurpose
room.
To set the mood, Ambrose appeared in vintage clothing. “I borrowed
the hat, vest and knapsack from Mr. Jones,” said Ambrose.
“But I had to buy my own shirt and pants because his wouldn’t fit
me!” he said, to loud laughter from the kids. Sixth grade teacher
James Jones is well known as a seasoned historical reenactor – and
is also noticeably smaller in frame than Ambrose.
Entitled “Hebron: The First Hundred Years – Churches, Heroes
and Conflicts”, Ambrose focused on a variety of themes,
including the numerous attempts by St. Peters Church to have
an ordained minister (they all died
either in transit to England or from
small pox while awaiting ordination
in the mother country). He also
engaged the audience in the famous
incident in which Reverend Samuel
Peters was threatened with tar and
feathering by the Sons of Liberty,
only to be rescued at the final hour
by one of Hebron’s most famous, and
well-respected, ministers, Benjamin
Pomeroy.
Chris Ambrose, a popular
The event was sponsored by the
substitute teacher and
seasoned actor, recently Hebron Elementary School Parent
presented “Hebron: Teacher Association. “Chris approached
us with this idea. With
also educational. The timing was
perfect,” said Lisa Garcia, who co-chairs the PTA Program
Committee with Janice McMahon.
“We presented the concept to Principal Joanne Collins, and she
and a team of educators decided to move forward with the program,”
said Garcia. “The PTA doesn’t make the final decision;
we only fund programs that are approved by the school.”
The Hebron Elementary School PTA holds one major fundraiser
a year – selling Sally Foster wrapping paper and decorative items
in the fall – and supplements that effort with other smaller
fundraisers, such as student school pictures.
Ambrose, who easily interwove history that students are currently
learning with significant events in Hebron’s first hundred
years, ended his presentation with some important words for the
students to consider: “It’s your town; it’s your history.”
FINANCIAL FOCUS
by Steve Blevins
Know Objectives of Mutual Funds
Before Investing
With thousands of mutual funds on the
market, how can you choose the ones that are
right for your individual needs? For starters,
you need to know the objective of each mutual fund in which
you plan to invest.
Let’s take a look at the investment objectives of some of the most
popular types of mutual funds:
Growth funds — These funds invest in the stocks of growing
companies, with the goal of providing investors with capital
appreciation. In plain English, you invest in these funds for the
potential to make your money grow. If you invest in these funds,
you will almost certainly experience the “ups and downs” of the
market, but if you hold your funds long enough, and they are
well managed, you may increase your investment’s potential
return.
Growth-and-income funds — As its name suggests, a growthand-income
fund is structured to provide the potential for both
growth in value and current income payments, in the form of
dividends. Generally speaking, these funds are less risky than
growth funds yet offer lower growth potential. Keep in mind,
though, that dividends can be increased, decreased or eliminated
at any time without notice.
also share some important traits in common. First, financial professionals
choose the investments, which benefits you. Second,
mutual funds, by owning many different types of securities,
offer the advantage of diversification. (However, diversification,
by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss in a
declining market.
A financial advisor can help you choose those mutual funds
that may be appropriate for your needs. But it’s still your responsibility
to know about the funds in which you invest — so,
before writing a check, read a fund’s prospectus, which can be
obtained from your financial advisor. The prospectus contains
complete information about the fund, including its investment
objectives, risks, charges and expenses, all of which you should
consider carefully. Ultimately, the best investors are usually the
best-informed investors.
Steve Blevins, AAMS, is a registered Financial Advisor helping clients
grow their wealth, manage their retirement income and protect
their assets. His office is located at 10 Main Street in Hebron.
International funds — You can choose from several types of
international funds: global funds, which invest in both U.S.
and international stocks; international funds, which invest
primarily outside the U.S.; country specific funds, which focus
on one country or region; and emerging market funds, which
concentrate on small, developing countries. These funds generally
invest for growth, but they involve special types of risk, such
as currency fluctuations and the prospect of investments being
affected by political or economic turmoil.
Bond funds — When you invest in a bond fund, you are seeking
current income, in the form of interest payments, and the chance
to help stabilize a portfolio that might be heavily weighted toward
stocks. You can choose from funds containing municipal
bonds, corporate bonds, mortgage-backed securities or U.S.
government bonds. Although bonds funds generally contain less
investment risk than stock funds, they carry a different type of
risk: purchasing power risk. In other words, the interest payments
you receive from your bond funds may not always keep up with
inflation. Be aware that bond funds are subject to interest-rate
risk and fund values may decline as interest rates rise.
While these types of funds have some obvious differences, they
DO YOU NEED TO DETOX?
By Linda Jacques, The Mindbody Connection
Everyday, toxins accumulate in our bodies,
due to the environment and/or diet.
Smoking and alcohol consumption
accumulates even more toxins.
We inhale toxins from air pollution, first
or second-hand smoke, dental amalgam
fillings, and mold. External exposure, due
to ingestion include chemicals used on
crops or in food stocks, drinking water, and in medicine and
drugs. Injections from vaccinations and other injections, and
tattoos are toxic. Absorption from chemicals used on fabrics
we wear, paints, plastics, pesticides and chemical fertilizers are
toxic. Irradiation from medical x-rays, radon gas, cell phones,
computer monitors, television, microwave ovens, radios; power
grids are other sources of toxins.
There are also internal sources of toxins we are exposed to.
Fermentation, purification and rancidity from ingested foods,
dehydration, poor diet, stress and emotional imbalance are due
to toxins.
As a result of these toxins our bodies are depleted of crucial lifegiving
elements, leaving us to feel drained of energy or unable
Damage to our nervous systems and emotional well-being are
symptoms of toxic exposure.
Amston Lake To Host Hebron’s 300th Celebration On June 7
The Amston Lake community has been busy preparing
an exciting event for the whole town of Hebron to enjoy.
As one of the Hebron 300th Celebration Committee’s sponsored
events for 2008, “Amston Lake Neighborhood Day” will be
a giant tag sale and flea market, complete with plenty of arts,
crafts, food, fun and community camaraderie.
by Lynn Mika, Amston Lake Association Secretary
Rain or shine, the event will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue
until 2:00 p.m. The festivities will be centered on and around
the Berglund Green - a triangle of grassy land located directly
across from the Amston Lake Main Beach - and will promote a
“Spring Fling” atmosphere.
For the kids, there will be free balloons (while they last), and free
access to a moonwalk inflatable “bouncer.” Families may sign up
to participate in a judged sand-castle and sand sculpture building
contest on the main beach. Local Musicians have been invited
to attend to add to the acoustic enjoyment of the day.
Amston is one of several areas of Hebron to host such an event in
2008. “We have several different neighborhood days ... the others
being Hope Valley and Gilead,” said Peter Moon, chairman
of the Hebron 300th Celebration Committee. “We are trying to
several areas showcasing the history of Hebron and Amston Lake.
The Hebron Fire Department will have trucks and equipment on
display. Larry E. Zimmerman, author of “The Turner Legacy - A
History of Amston Lake” will be available for a book signing.
The Amston Lake Association will also have a booth featuring
Tag sale and craft space rentals are $10.00 each, and reservations
are not required. Space is available on a first-come, first-served
basis. Any local artists, crafts people and local musicians with an
Hebron 300 th Committee Readies for Summer Events
Get ready for a busy and fun-filled
summer as Hebron celebrates its 300 th
anniversary of incorporation!
Donna McCalla
Peter Moon, Chairman of the 300 th
Committee, reports that six major activities
are planned for June and August.
“We’re trying to build a stronger sense of
community throughout Hebron. We all
go our separate paths and don’t necessarily
intersect all the time. We hope to provide
enough opportunities for people to enjoy Former resident and RHAM graduate Mark
at least one or more of these events.” Cafazzo will return to Hebron in August for
the re-enactment between the Peters Corp
“June will see events all four Saturdays; and the Lebanon Town Militia. Cafazzo is a
we’re excited that so many residents have long time member of the Peters Corp.
rallied together to offer these unique opportunities
to celebrate Hebron’s past,” he added.
hike through the State Forest – following
Jeremy Brook down to Grayville
Falls Park – can also be undertaken by
the more adventurous. Throughout the
day, Hope Valley neighbors will be hosting
a bake sale with proceeds benefiting
the Hope Valley Church maintenance
fund. Drinkuth and his wife, Mimi
Tyler, are Chairpersons of Hope Valley
Neighborhood Day.
On June 7, the Amston Lake Improvement Association is hosting
a Neighborhood Day from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Events
occurring on Amston Lake Day are outlined in a related article
in this publication.
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church History Day will be held on June 14
from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. according to Cindy Robson, a
church member who also serves on the 300 th Committee. “We
will be offering tours of the church and some of the historical
artifacts that we have,” she said. Included in those artifacts are
a baptismal fount and two candlesticks which date back to the
original Anglican Church built on Godfrey Hill in the early
1700’s, beautiful stain-glassed windows that serve as both history
and art lessons, and the church’s 1850 Johnson organ.
“In addition, members will conduct tours of our two cemeteries,
the historic cemetery on Godfrey Hill and the current cemetery
behind the church features the resting place of Governor John
S. Peters,” said Robson. Godfrey Hill is located on the east side
of Gilead Street, just north of the intersection with Slocum
Road.
A unique opportunity exists on June 21, when residents of
Hope Valley (formerly known as “Hope Vale”) will host another
Neighborhood Day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Hope
Valley Church, built in 1849, will be open all day. In addition
to the church, Hope Valley was once the site of several mills,
blacksmith shops, a post office, stores, a one room schoolhouse,
and houses for mill workers. A self-guided walking tour map
highlighting the remains of those sites will be available.
Long time Hope Valley resident Bill Drinkuth will lead a guided
interpretive walk for those interested at 11:00 a.m. A longer
The town’s Annual Picnic & Fireworks event will again be
hosted by the Hebron Lions Club at the Lions Fairgrounds on
June 28. But the day is going to offer a whole lot more than
previous town picnics!
First, there will “Treasure Hunt” involving tours of the best and
most interesting sites in Hebron, such as Prophet’s Rock, Gay
City State Park, and so on. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. at
RHAM, with the actual Treasure Hunt starting at 10:00 a.m.
Any number of people can be in a car, so bring the whole family;
up to 50 cars may participate.
“Here’s a chance to see places in your own town that you may
have never visited before,” said Neal Alderman, who is organizing
the event. “The prize winner will be the vehicle that visits
all of the required sites in the proper order and in the proper
time. This is not a race, but will be done at normal speed so
that anyone can play.”
At approximately 1:30 p.m., following the Treasure Hunt and
prior to the start of the picnic, there will be a double-header
“vintage baseball game” involving the New London Thames
Baseball Club and the Columbia Vintage Baseball Club at the
Lions Fairgrounds. “Vintage” refers to an 1860 version of the
game that uses a “slow pitch” and different look and rules. These
different rules include a “no balls, no strike” rule, and field players
need not use gloves.
“The 300 Celebration Committee financially supported the
fireworks for the evening,” said Moon. “As a result, the fireworks
display will be feature a special 300 “salutes” finale!”
August offers two more exciting events.
“We’d like to invite all of our neighbors to enjoy the beauty of
Gilead on Saturday, August 2,” said Alison Doherty, Chairman
of Gilead Neighborhood Day. “It’s a serene, relaxing, and
wonderful place to be,” she said.
Tours of the historic Gilead Church,
shown here in a 1907 photograph, will be
available on August 2 when residents and
visitors attend Gilead Neighborhood Day.
From 10:00 a.m.
until 4:00 p.m.
visitors can tour the
Gilead Congregational
Church and
the Gilead Cemetery,
as well as take
a self-guided tour of
Gilead’s many historic
homes.
Special events include:
a blacksmith
presentation by Country Carpenters (10:00 a.m. to noon) and
a farm tour and tractor rides at Mapleleaf, the Ellis family farm
(noon – 4:00 p.m.).
“There will be all kinds of activities for all ages at the church,”
said Doherty, “including a quilt raffle, a display of historic Gilead
quilts, and historic games for children.” For those who don’t
bring their own picnics, food can be purchased at the church
from noon until 2:00 p.m. Brochures of the Gilead historic
homes can also be purchased at the church.
August 15-17 will be both educational and entertaining when
Revolutionary War re-enactors come to Hebron. On Friday
afternoon, the Lebanon Town Militia (American Rebels) and
the Peter’s Corp (British troops) arrive in town. The re-enactor
groups will set up camp in the large field at the end of the new
John Horton Boulevard (across from Ted’s IGA). The encampments
can be visited, explored and everyone is encouraged to
talk to the re-enactors.
The main event will be Saturday as the two sides prepare for
battle and engage the enemy. Only one side will emerge victorious!
Sunday morning will be the closing portion as each side
prepares to move onto a different battlefield in another town,
but you can still visit the camps as they break down.
Mark your calendars for all these wonderful events celebrating
Hebron’s history.
Careful…Targeted Speed Enforcement Areas May Be Coming Your Way!
To aid in increased speed enforcement
efforts, Hebron patrol cars are outfitted with
numerous electronic devices such as these.
One of the benefits
of the winter
months is that
many residents
stay at home
more often, resulting
in less
overall noise and
traffic in Hebron.
That seems to
change right after
the town’s annual
areas were Loveland Road, North Pond Road, West Main Street,
and Martin Road. Kraynak explained that those areas were chosen
because they had the highest number of resident speeding
complaints during the month of March.
“We all know that warm weather brings children playing outside,
families taking walks in the neighborhood, and bicyclists riding
on the street shoulders. It is important that everyone comply
with the posted speed limits so Hebron can continue to be a
safe place,” she said.
To report areas of speeding, please contact the Hebron Police
Department at 228‐3710.
Maple Fest event in early March.
“With the increasingly warmer
weather and more outside activities,
we’re obviously seeing more
traffic. But we’re also seeing an
increased level of complaints from
residents about speeders throughout
town,” said Resident Trooper
First Class Kelly Kraynak.
Kraynak identified the four general
times a day when most complaints
are received about speeding: the
morning rush hour, high school
dismissal, evening rush hours, and
sunny weekends.
Over the next several months, the
Hebron Resident Trooper’s Office
and Hebron Police Department
will be increasing their motor
vehicle enforcement efforts.
“In an attempt to address residents’
concerns about speeding,
we have also initiated a new speed
enforcement program that will
focus on four different locations
every month. Those targeted
areas, chosen because they had
the highest number of complaints
in the previous month, will have
extra patrolling. These patrols
will be in addition to our regular
efforts to tackle this particular
problem,” said Kraynak.
In April, for example, the targeted
Resident Troopers Offer Safety Tips for Airline Trail
Donna McCalla
Kraynak and Gendron offered the following advice for residents
visiting the Airline Trail:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Keep all electronics and personal items, especially purses
and wallets, out of view. Secure any valuable items in your
trunk or lock them in the glove box prior to arriving at the
trail’s parking lots.
Make sure all car doors are locked.
While it is tempting to leave your car’s windows slightly
open on hot days, make sure they are rolled up all the way.
“A burglar can access your car locks through the smallest
open crack in your window,” said Kraynak.
If your car has an alarm, make sure it is activated.
Resident State Troopers Mark Gendron (left) and Kelly Kraynak
gear up for visitors to the Airline Trail, a popular destination for
many throughout the spring, summer and fall months. They
encourage people to engage in safety precautions in the parking
areas -- and also to stop and say hello!
One of the most popular spots in Hebron every summer is the
Airline Trail. Managed by the Connecticut Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP), the trail serves as a hub for outdoor
enthusiasts and is promoted by the DEP as “an important link
with the past and preserves open space for the future.”
For Hebron residents, the primary entrances to the Airline Trail
are on South Church Street, just north of Route 85 Lumber, and
on Old Colchester Road, slightly north of Heron Hill Road.
“Although the trails and the interior portion of the parks have
proven to be safe, the parking areas experience periodic vehicle
break-ins,” said Resident State Trooper Kelly Kraynak. “We
are working with DEP to combat such activity by patrolling the
area with police vehicles and bicycles. Both Mark Gendron and
I are bicycle-certified for patrol activities, as are several other
Hebron Police Officers.” Gendron is Hebron’s other Resident
State Trooper.
5.
If you see any suspicious activity, immediately report it to the
Hebron police at 228-3710 or call 911. Your involvement
may help someone from becoming another crime victim.
“And if you happen to see any of the Hebron bicycle patrol units
riding on the Airline Trail or at other locations throughout the
town, please don’t hesitate to say hello,” said Kraynak.
Peters House Committee Off and Running
The future of the Peters House, located at 150 East Street, continues
to be a “hot topic” in Hebron.
Following the withdrawal of a proposal to purchase the house,
the Board of Selectmen established a “Peters House Use Study
Committee” and, appointed a number of residents to the committee
at their April 3 meeting.
Members of the Peters House Committee, representing various
boards and commissions, are Gayle Mulligan (Board of
Selectmen); Dan Larson (Board of Finance); Will Moorcroft
(Planning & Zoning Commission); Anne Fitzpatrick (Parks &
Recreation); Deena Watson (Hebron Historic Properties Commission);
and Donna McCalla (Hebron Historical Society).
Barbara Soderberg, David Bland, John Baron, Ray Overton,
and Jacob Yopp were appointed as Citizens-At-Large.
Wasting no time, members held their first meeting on April 16.
Moorcroft was elected chairman of the committee, with McCalla
elected vice chairman and Fitzpatrick elected secretary.
With direction from the Selectmen, members set the following
four goals: (1) Gather input from the public, boards and commissions,
and department heads on possible uses of the Peters
House; (2) Recommend at least three usages for the Peters House
to be presented to the Selectmen for their consideration and
for possible municipal usages of the building. “I’m pleased to
report that we have already heard back from a number of departments,
all with good ideas and suggestions that we will explore
in detail,” said Moorcroft.
RHAM Middle School who
is producing the play with
Hebron Historical Society.
“But we also think the new dates are great timing; the play will
now be one of the final special events celebrating Hebron’s 300 th
anniversary of incorporation.”
