The Teaching
Shakespeare School
Explore teaching through drama and the arts
The Teaching Shakespeare School is a hands-on professional
development program that demonstrates how the arts can be
incorporated into the curriculum to address the different aspects
of student learning and inform the teaching of literacy and
other subject areas.
Bring Shakespeare to life in the classroom as teachers, students
and actors together explore the plays from a dramatic rather than
simply a literary point of view. This interactive approach helps
students discover and form personal connections to the
characters and the text; think critically about the big ideas, issues
and emotions in the story; and gain a sense of empowerment and
ownership of Shakespeare’s stories, characters, thoughts, feelings
and language as part of themselves. For teachers, the Teaching
Shakespeare School helps rekindle a love for teaching and
suggests strategies and methodologies to reinvigorate and
expand their own best teaching practices.
The Teaching Shakespeare School takes place in four stages:
Stage One: Teacher Workshops
Teachers spend three days at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival
previewing plays and working with Education Department staff and
actors to explore strategies that will help demystify Shakespeare.
Stage Two: Classroom Visits
In partnership with a professional actor, plan and teach three
lessons on your chosen play.
Stage Three: Student Theatre Trips
Choose from a selection of dates for which excellent seats have
already been reserved.
Stage Four: Student Players’ Festival (optional)
Classes perform scenes from Shakespeare before expert
adjudicators on the stage of the Studio Theatre.
The workshops, the classroom visits and your theatre tickets in
August are funded by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Subsidies,
based on need, are available for the student trip in the autumn.
Stratford in Your Classroom
The Ontario Schools Project
Live theatre stimulates the senses and offers an immediacy
and excitement quite different from that of any other medium.
Both Artistic Director Des McAnuff and General Director
Antoni Cimolino feel that this unique opportunity should be
made available to students throughout Ontario – hence the
Festival’s new Ontario Schools Project.
With the goal of making it possible for each and every student in
Ontario to experience live theatre at Stratford at least once before
they graduate from Grade 12, the Ontario Schools Project is
designed to introduce students in different regions each year to
the full Festival experience.
Targeted regions for the 2011 season are Ottawa and Windsor.
Teachers in these areas are invited to participate in the program,
which includes:
• A full-day workshop for teachers based on either The Grapes of
Wrath or Twelfth Night, with curriculum-based lesson plans provided.
• An artist visit to the classroom to support the teacher in an
active, drama-based approach to the teaching of the play.
• Excellent seats already reserved for Ontario Schools Project
classes to see the play they are studying.
Not on your curriculum? Not a problem!
Seeing a Shakespeare play performed live by one of the world’s
leading classical theatre companies is a rich learning experience
no matter what you’re studying in class. That’s why, for the
three lesser-known Shakespeare titles on our 2011 playbill, we’ve
included quick tips on how you can relate that play to the ones you
teach. See pages 10 to 12.

Shakespeare on Wheels
A full immersion experience for Grades 5 to 8. A team of four
professional artists, representing music, drama, dance and
visual art, moves into your school for a two-week residency.
The team provides complete in-class arts programming for
each participating grade, plus a voluntary after-school program
that culminates in a short performance for friends and family.
Students learn first-hand about the collaborative effort of
making theatre and discover a Shakespeare play from the
inside. Open to Ontario schools within driving distance of
Stratford. Residencies take place in the winter and schools are
chosen at least 18 months in advance.
Interested in having Shakespeare on Wheels visit your school?
Contact the Education Department (see page 2).
Shakespeare After School
Our “theatre club” for teens brings together students in
Grades 9 to 12 from Stratford’s local school boards, Avon
Maitland and Huron Perth. Members meet once a month in
the fall and spring for workshops, plays and pizza. And the
best part: it’s all free (funded by the Teachers-Festival Liaison
Council, the power behind the Teachers’ Conference –
see page 8).
Open to secondary students in the Avon Maitland and Huron
Perth Catholic District School Boards.
lntroducing... The Stratford Challenge
Show us your Shakespeare and you could win $10,000! The Stratford Challenge invites students to film their
performance of a scene from a Shakespeare play and go head-to-head with other students around Ontario. Scenes
are adjudicated by an expert panel of actors and directors; the top five groups perform their scenes live in Stratford
for final judging. Entry deadline is February 28, 2011. Open to Ontario secondary students only for the pilot year.
Richard III
by William Shakespeare
Revelling in his own villainy, the
deformed yet charismatic Richard, Duke
of Gloucester, carves a murderous path
through his own family to reach the
English throne. To seize power, however,
is one thing; to hold on to it is another
his past rising up to challenge his rule.
Teachers: If you teach Macbeth, here’s
to power. Both plays also raise
Titus
Andronicus
by William Shakespeare
Victorious in his wars against the Goths,
Roman general Titus Andronicus brings
home as his captives their queen, Tamora,
her lover, Aaron, and her three sons.
Ignoring Tamora’s pleas, Titus hands
over her eldest son for sacrifice – thus
setting in motion a relentless cycle of
revenge as horrific as it is grotesque.
Teachers: This early play foreshadows
both King Lear and Romeo and Juliet.
Like Lear, Titus bestows power unwisely,
only to find it used against him. Here too,
families are devastated by an eye-for-aneye
culture of revenge.
Shakespeare’s
Will
by Vern Thiessen
On the eve of William Shakespeare’s
funeral, his widow, Anne Hathaway,
recalls her life with – and without – the
enigmatic poet. As she prepares to
read her husband’s will, she reveals
the enthralling story of a wife and
mother who has made tremendous
sacrifices for love, and who still grieves
over an event of the distant past.
The Grapes
of Wrath
Based on the novel by John Steinbeck
Adapted by Frank Galati
Having survived the drought of the 1930s Dust Bowl only to see
a harrowing trek from Oklahoma to California, intending to begin
anew as migrant farm workers. Their arrival in this “promised land,”
The Little
Years
by John Mighton
As a girl growing up in the 1950s, Kate
is fascinated by the physics of space
and time, an interest dismissed by
those around her as unbecoming to a
young woman. While her brother William
achieves literary renown, Kate becomes
increasingly withdrawn as the years go
by – but lives to see her inquiring spirit
blossom anew in the next generation.
by Michel Tremblay
Translated by John Van Burek
and Bill Glassco
Returning in tears from a Halloween
party, Hosanna – a.k.a. transvestite
Claude Lemieux – bickers with her
partner, Cuirette, as the two prepare
for bed. As the mystery of what has
so upset her is gradually revealed,
Hosanna must confront her illusions
