Responsibilities of Internet Students
What is Distance Learning?
• Before registering for virtual courses, students need to
verify that his/her computer maintains all compatible
technical requirements for the desired course. Students
should also have a backup plan in case technical difficulties
occur with the student’s primary computer.
• It is the responsibility of the student to stay in contact
with the instructor of the course. If the student loses
contact with the instructor, the student should immediately
contact the Distance Learning office via email at
dlc@nemcc.edu for assistance.
• It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements
to obtain the needed textbooks for an Internet
class prior to the first day of class.
• If an instructor requires an exam for an Internet class
to be proctored, it is the responsibility of the student to
schedule a test appointment via the electronic form
located on the NEMCC Distance Learning website or
make other arrangements based on the listed guidelines.
• Students are not allowed to send junk email to anyone
associated with the Mississippi Virtual Community
College System. This includes, but is not limited to the
following: jokes, profanity, pornography and chain letters.
www.nemcc.edu 18005552154
Distance learning courses allow students to experience
a classroom setting that is significantly different
from traditional classrooms. Students who perform
well in classrooms settings should adapt easily to
Distance Learning courses. It is not, however, advisable
for students to enroll in distance learning courses
in subject areas in which they have experienced difficulties
in the past. Distance learning classes require
as much (and sometimes more) time and effort than
do traditional classes. They also allow students the
opportunity to experience new ways of thinking and
learning.
The online students of today consist primarily of working
people who are trying to better their opportunities.
This however is changing, as more and more people
become aware of the opportunities available through
distance learning. The traditional classroom setting
will never go away, but the virtual classroom is a significant
player in today's educational community.
When students are admitted to the college, their ACT scores are reviewed to determine if specific
academic skills need to be improved. Students with ACT English sub scores 14 and below are
required to complete the “WritePlacer” test provided by Accuplacer. Students who score 06 on
the WritePlacer will be registered for ENG 0113 Beginning English. Completion of this course
with a 7 or higher on the Write Place will qualify the student for entry into ENG 1113 English
Composition I.
Students with ACT math sub scores of 18 or lower may be in need of instruction to enhance their
mathematics skills. The College uses the Accuplacer Elementary Algebra test to accurately place
students in the correct level of mathematics. Students who score 52.9 or lower will be registered
for MAT 0123 Beginning Algebra. Students who score 53 to 83.9 will be registered for MAT 1233
Intermediate Algebra. Students who score 84 or higher will be registered in MAT 1313 College
Algebra. Also, students with an 84 or higher can be registered for MAT 1323 Trigonometry.
Students who have an ACT sub score in math of 22 or higher and Advanced Math and
Trigonometry in high school may register for one of the following: MAT 1815 Calculus I, MAT
1513 Business Calculus I, or MAT 1613 Calculus IA. Entering freshmen with an ACT Reading
score of 14 or below will be required to enroll in REA 0113, Developmental Reading.
If you have concerns about your test scores, you may see Mrs. Kathy Williams in the Student
Success Center in Waller Hall.
