Chicago is located in Illinois, a midwestern state along the
southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. With a population of
nearly 10 million people, it is the third largest city in the United
States. O’Hare International Airport is easily accessible and
transports more than 200,000 travelers every day, making
Chicago the transportation center of the country.
Life in Chicago
Chicago boasts one of the world’s top symphony orchestras,
the renowned Art Institute of Chicago and some of the nation’s
best theatres. The city is equipped with one of the most
comprehensive public transportation systems in the United
States. Chicago also is known for its diversity. The community
includes citizens of all ethnic backgrounds from all over the
world. This unique blend of cultures creates an exciting and
interesting environment.
The university is, in part, what it is because of Chicago. The
city serves as headquarters of the world’s busiest commodities
and mercantile exchanges, numerous Fortune 500 companies
and thousands of small entrepreneurial companies.
Since 1898, DePaul University has been a part of Chicago. Today,
over 125,000 DePaul alumni form the network DePaul students
can count on for contacts around the world.
Life on Campus
DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus is situated in one of Chicago’s
most exclusive residential neighborhoods. This 30-acre campus,
home to most residence halls, newly constructed fitness and
student centers, and the main library, is within walking distance of
beautiful Lake Michigan and 15 minutes on public transportation
from the city center. Just around the corner are shops, clubs,
bookstores, restaurants and coffee houses. The DePaul area in
Lincoln Park offers some of the most highly desirable urban
living in the country.
Our Loop Campus is right in the heart of Chicago’s business
and financial district. This campus is within blocks of the Board
of Trade, Federal Reserve Bank, the Commodities Exchange
and a variety of federal, state and municipal headquarters.
DePaul also has a network of four suburban campuses with
locations in Naperville, Rolling Meadows, O’Hare (Des Plaines)
and Oak Forest. These campuses provide adult and graduate
students convenient options for earning a DePaul degree.
LIFE IN CHICAGO

Academic Overview
For over a century, DePaul University
has built a reputation for excellence
recognized throughout the United States.
Accreditation
Accreditation from eight major accrediting institutions in the
United States confirms DePaul’s reputation.
• The Higher Learning Commission of the
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
• AACSB International—Association to Advance
Collegiate Schools of Business
• The American Chemical Society
• The American Psychological Association
• The American Bar Association
• The National Association of Schools of Music
• The National Council for Accreditation
of Teacher Education
• The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
A faculty of Experts
DePaul faculty members are present for one primary purpose:
to teach. Deeply committed to helping students, most are also
engaged in research and represent a diverse blend of leading
scholars and experts who are equally at home in boardrooms
and classrooms. Almost 90 percent of DePaul’s full-time faculty
hold doctorates or the highest degrees in their fields, and many
have reputations and connections with a global reach.
Types of Degrees
DePaul offers three types of degrees. The bachelor’s degree,
or undergraduate degree, is the first degree students earn.
It typically takes four years of study to complete and includes a
distribution of courses with a concentration in one field called
a major.
A master’s degree, or graduate degree, requires one to two years
of in-depth study in a single subject. Students can earn master’s
degrees in fields related or unrelated to their undergraduate degree.
A doctoral degree enables students with exceptional academic
potential to pursue advanced study and research. Three years
of study is usually required to earn a doctorate, which is the
highest degree awarded by U.S. universities.
The Academic Year
The academic year at DePaul is based on the 10-week quarter
system. Each quarter is a separate unit requiring the completion
of specific courses and examinations. The fall quarter begins
in September, the winter quarter begins in January, and the
spring quarter begins in late March or early April. There are
two, five-week summer sessions; the first begins in June and
the second in July. The largest number of students enter in fall
and winter each year.

ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

Nine colleges and schools within the university provide more than 200
undergraduate and graduate programs, including several innovative degrees
which reflect the constantly changing needs of the world economy and global
community. You may choose from extensive options, including academic
concentrations, internships, study abroad and honors programs.
Course Loads
Full-time undergraduate students take three or four courses
each quarter. Full-time graduate students take two or three
courses each quarter. Schedules of class sessions will vary from
one quarter to the next.
Grading and the Credit System
Grades are computed on a four-point scale and are assigned
for each course at the completion of each quarter. Based
on performance in class, on examinations, research papers
and special assignments, the following grades are used:
A = Excellent, B = Very Good, C = Satisfactory, D = Poor, F = Failure.
(See page 16 for further details.)
College credit is earned for grades of D and above and is
accumulated toward a degree on the basis of quarter hours.
The unit of credit is one quarter hour granted for 45 minutes
of classroom work a week. A course carries four quarter hours
unless otherwise specified. An overall C/C+ average is the
minimum requirement for graduation.
Transfer Credit
Credit consideration is given for university-level work successfully
completed at a Ministry of Education-recognized institution if
it matches a similar course offered by DePaul. English courses
taken at an institution outside the U.S., with few exceptions,
are not transferrable. Undergraduate students receive a
preliminary evaluation of transferrable credits when admitted
to the university.
Transfer applicants are encouraged to have a course-by-course
evaluation done by an outside agency. The results, along with
the official transcripts, will be reviewed by DePaul’s Office of
International Admission for credit transferability. The credential
evaluators DePaul most readily accepts are Educational
Perspectives and Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE).
Additional information may be found at edperspective.org
or ece.org.
In general, previously earned credits are not applicable to
master’s or doctoral programs.
ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

“I used to think DePaul
had good business
programs, wonderful
students and professors,
and nice facilities.
Now, I can say that is
true without hesitation.”
I am studying accounting, and I am very satisfied
because my professors are enthusiastic. They
help us learn and focus by using group work
and classroom participation. This also helps me
improve my English skills by interacting with
my native classmates. They are considerate
of my English and give me support in my
classroom involvement.
As a new student, my decision to attend
