Three UWPD Employees Receive Accolades
The University of Washington Police Department announced the winners of three
award categories voted on annually by members of the department. The UWPD
includes staff of the police department, UW Security Guards, Husky Nightwalk,
Communications Center, Victim Advocate and administrative staff. Chief John
Vinson announced the awards at a department meeting on February 29, 2012 as
follows:
Officer of the Year- Officer M. Davis was selected by his peers as Officer of the
Year. Davis is a 13-year veteran who throughout 2011 performed as an Acting
Sergeant, handled rigorous patrol activities and received commendation for
assisting with the saving of a life during a water rescue from the frigid waters of
Portage Bay in November. Officer Davis has been a real asset to the department
and is well respected by everyone.
Civilian Employee of the Year- Police Communications Specialist P. DeFabritis was
chosen as the Civilian Employee of the Year primarily for the assistance she
renders on a daily basis as a police dispatcher. In just over a year of service, she is
known for her thorough and resourceful way of helping customers as well as
officers in the field. She has consistently taken on projects to improve unit
effectiveness and is seen as an important part of the overall response to the needs
of the campus community.
Supervisor of the Year- Sergeant C. Kao was selected as the Supervisor of the
Year due in part to his leadership qualities and in his technical services provided to
the department. Sergeant Kao is the department’s sketch artist and was
instrumental in preparing sketches from victim recollections on several major cases
leading to arrests. In addition to supervising a patrol shift, Sergeant Kao is also very
giving of his time and talents as the chief department photographer.
“These individuals represent the kind of caring, compassionate and professional
employees that allow the department to contribute to the overall goal of education
at the University of Washington,” said Chief Vinson.
The UWPD is one of only 51 university or college police departments nationally
accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement
Agencies. Employee recognition is one of the many accreditation standards. More
