Three UWPD Employees Receive Accolades<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Washington</strong> Police <strong>Department</strong> announced the winners <strong>of</strong> three<br />

award categories voted on annually by members <strong>of</strong> the department. The UWPD<br />

includes staff <strong>of</strong> the police department, UW Security Guards, Husky Nightwalk,<br />

Communications Center, Victim Advocate and administrative staff. Chief John<br />

Vinson announced the awards at a department meeting on February 29, 2012 as<br />

follows:<br />

Officer <strong>of</strong> the Year- Officer M. Davis was selected by his peers as Officer <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Year. Davis is a 13-year veteran who throughout 2011 performed as an Acting<br />

Sergeant, handled rigorous patrol activities and received commendation for<br />

assisting with the saving <strong>of</strong> a life during a water rescue from the frigid waters <strong>of</strong><br />

Portage Bay in November. Officer Davis has been a real asset to the department<br />

and is well respected by everyone.<br />

Civilian Employee <strong>of</strong> the Year- Police Communications Specialist P. DeFabritis was<br />

chosen as the Civilian Employee <strong>of</strong> the Year primarily for the assistance she<br />

renders on a daily basis as a police dispatcher. In just over a year <strong>of</strong> service, she is<br />

kn<strong>own</strong> for her thorough and resourceful way <strong>of</strong> helping customers as well as<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers in the field. She has consistently taken on projects to improve unit<br />

effectiveness and is seen as an important part <strong>of</strong> the overall response to the needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> the campus community.<br />

Supervisor <strong>of</strong> the Year- Sergeant C. Kao was selected as the Supervisor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Year due in part to his leadership qualities and in his technical services provided to<br />

the department. Sergeant Kao is the department’s sketch artist and was<br />

instrumental in preparing sketches from victim recollections on several major cases<br />

leading to arrests. In addition to supervising a patrol shift, Sergeant Kao is also very<br />

giving <strong>of</strong> his time and talents as the chief department photographer.<br />

“These individuals represent the kind <strong>of</strong> caring, compassionate and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

employees that allow the department to contribute to the overall goal <strong>of</strong> education<br />

at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Washington</strong>,” said Chief Vinson.<br />

The UWPD is one <strong>of</strong> only 51 university or college police departments nationally<br />

accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement<br />

Agencies. Employee recognition is one <strong>of</strong> the many accreditation standards. More<br />
