What time the Wa-wa's honking dang
Betokened glad the quickened year,
The mating birds their carols sang,
Far through the forest ringing clear;
Oft he that bore a prophet -heart ,
When lore had touched its deeper spring,
Some tender lay, with simple art,
Unto his homely pipe would sing.
And I unforgotten days !
Will bring to charm my deeper pain
Some fragment of the olden lays:
Will wake that woodland lute again.
