HAYO-WENT-HA'S JOURNEYING.<br />

His Chee-maun, blest <strong>of</strong> Manito,<br />

That paddle-bearing h<strong>and</strong> had none,<br />

Yet swiftly on <strong>the</strong> billows drew<br />

With him who lightly willed it on ;<br />

That bore him <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> halls <strong>of</strong> day<br />

Across <strong>the</strong> shining seas unknown,<br />

He hid <strong>from</strong> curious eyes away-<br />

Kept for its nobler use alone.<br />

Yet <strong>of</strong>t, when in <strong>the</strong> rising dawn<br />

He saw Yo-non-to looming large,<br />

That bark, <strong>from</strong> secret place withdrawn,<br />

He brought unto <strong>the</strong> waiting marge ;<br />

And parting <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> kindling shore<br />

As with his quickening spirit rife,<br />

It Hayo-went-ha proudly bore,<br />

Went speeding like a thing<br />

<strong>of</strong> life.
