THE COMING OF HAYO-WENT-HA. 31<br />

In that far time how long ago ?<br />

What matters if I may not tell<br />

How many suns ? enough to know<br />

That <strong>of</strong> a truth it so befell ;<br />

Of greatest deeds <strong>the</strong> world hath known,<br />

Of hero-fame <strong>the</strong> most sublime,<br />

<strong>The</strong> unremembered years alone<br />

Have record ;<br />

in that far-<strong>of</strong>f time,<br />

From Isles beyond <strong>the</strong> bound <strong>of</strong> day<br />

Where dwells <strong>the</strong> mighty Wa-zha-w<strong>and</strong>,<br />

A magic Chee-maun, far away,<br />

Wide-parting <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shining L<strong>and</strong>,<br />

A magic Chee-maun, winged with flame<br />

And light <strong>and</strong> fleet as morning sun,<br />

Swift o'er <strong>the</strong> flashing billows came,<br />

Nor paddle had<br />

nor need <strong>of</strong> one.<br />

And Him alone it lightly bore,<br />

Bright speeding on <strong>the</strong> foaming flood,<br />

Him <strong>from</strong> that far-<strong>of</strong>f fairer shore<br />

Him, Hayo-went-ha, great <strong>and</strong> good ;<br />

Low-journeying <strong>from</strong> Love's radiant place<br />

<strong>The</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild to bless ;<br />

His brethren <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dusky Race<br />

<strong>The</strong> dwellers in <strong>the</strong> wilderness.
