WHILE yet <strong>the</strong> rising days were few,<br />

And deeds <strong>of</strong> wonder had not grown<br />

Too strange <strong>and</strong> marvelous to be true,<br />

So all infrequent <strong>and</strong> unknown ;<br />

While yet in wood <strong>and</strong> waterfall,<br />

In wild waves 1<br />

toss, in winds that blow,<br />

In cry <strong>of</strong> beast, in free bird's call<br />

Was heard <strong>the</strong> voice <strong>of</strong> Manito ;<br />

While yet in river, lake <strong>and</strong> sea,<br />

Oft heard in summer's twilight calm,<br />

Rude-floundering, dwelt great Unk-ta-he,<br />

<strong>The</strong> Nee-ba-naw-baigs laved <strong>and</strong> swam ;<br />

And everywhere by vale <strong>and</strong> hill,<br />

In rock <strong>and</strong> tree <strong>and</strong> floweret fair,<br />

Some spirit dwelt <strong>of</strong> good<br />

or ill<br />

Some spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth or air ;<br />
