Still Shin-ge-bis, through storm <strong>and</strong> gloam,<br />

Unto <strong>the</strong> reedy mere he went ;<br />

His strings <strong>of</strong> fish came dragging home ;<br />

Cooked, ate <strong>and</strong> slept he, well content ;<br />

Sang to <strong>the</strong> fire-light's paling glow,<br />

As on his bear-skin couch he lay<br />

:<br />

" Kabi-bonok-ka, blow, <strong>and</strong> blow<br />

Kabi-bonok-ka, go your way."<br />

Swift winged <strong>the</strong> North Wind o'er <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>,<br />

Unto <strong>the</strong> wigwam wroth he came ;<br />

<strong>The</strong>re Shin-ge-bis saw, listening, st<strong>and</strong><br />

Saw just beside <strong>the</strong> barky frame,<br />

Kabi-bonok-ka, chill <strong>and</strong> wan ;<br />

Still louder rang his roundelay :<br />

"Ho !<br />

Shin-ge-bis is still your man<br />

Ho !<br />

Windy God, I know } rour way."<br />

Wild <strong>and</strong> more shrill <strong>the</strong> North Wind blew,<br />

And yet a colder blast he sent ;<br />

<strong>The</strong>n, as aside <strong>the</strong> mat he drew,<br />

He stalked into <strong>the</strong> reedy tent,<br />

Sat mute beside <strong>the</strong> failing fire ;<br />

Without, <strong>the</strong> tempest's roar <strong>and</strong> clang<br />

Rose louder higher still <strong>and</strong> higher ;<br />

Yet Shin-ge-bis, he careless sang :
