<strong>The</strong>y, hissing, ran<br />

In chase <strong>of</strong> him that Mighty Man !<br />

<strong>The</strong>m Manabo-zho heard <strong>the</strong> while<br />

As on he sped<br />

O'er hill <strong>and</strong> vale each step a mile !<br />

Heard close behind <strong>the</strong> writhing tread<br />

Of creatures vile ;<br />

In each an Evil Manito.<br />

He mountain climbed<br />

<strong>the</strong> highest tree<br />

<strong>The</strong> topmost height ;<br />

O'er all <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> a boundless sea<br />

Did rush <strong>and</strong> swash ;<br />

Oh fearful !<br />

sight !<br />

Up<br />

to his knee<br />

<strong>The</strong> waters drew,<br />

Still higher<br />

higher round him grew.<br />
