124: THE LEAGUE OF THE IROQUOIS.<br />

Or, with <strong>the</strong> housewife's frugal care,<br />

Far through <strong>the</strong> forest's windy ways<br />

She roamed, <strong>the</strong> fallen nuts to bear<br />

And garner for <strong>the</strong> wintry days ;<br />

Or in <strong>the</strong> woods <strong>the</strong> sticks would break<br />

And bear <strong>the</strong>m to her lowly door,<br />

To cook <strong>the</strong> Mosa-meat, <strong>and</strong> make<br />

<strong>The</strong> l<strong>of</strong>ty-antlered Me-sha-way,<br />

Or fiercely-howling 0-kwa-ho ;<br />

<strong>The</strong> snowy Wau-bos, tender-eyed,<br />

<strong>The</strong> Jit-sho with <strong>the</strong> wary tread,<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ne-jig with <strong>the</strong> sleeky hide,<br />

<strong>The</strong> shagged Yek-wai, prowling dread.<br />

She watched <strong>the</strong> midnight-brooding star<br />

Chased by <strong>the</strong> dawn, <strong>and</strong> unafraid<br />

Save but for him, whose feet afar<br />

Still in <strong>the</strong> hunter-chase delayed ;<br />

Or in his Chee-maun fleet <strong>and</strong> free,<br />

That willing went <strong>and</strong> willing came,<br />

Borne lightly o'er <strong>the</strong> foaming sea<br />

Where, waiting, lit <strong>the</strong> Council-flame.
