THE BRIDAL. 109<br />

<strong>The</strong> White Swan singing on <strong>the</strong> lake<br />

Unto his ear more joyous sang ;<br />

More sweetly sad <strong>from</strong> out <strong>the</strong> brake<br />

<strong>The</strong> moaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lonely Mahng ;<br />

<strong>The</strong> soaring Ke-neu's screech <strong>and</strong> squall,<br />

<strong>The</strong> Wa-be-wawa honking near,<br />

<strong>The</strong> soaring Key-oshk's harsher call<br />

Seemed mellowed to his charmed ear.<br />

A music shook <strong>the</strong> quiet air<br />

Like tinkling bells <strong>of</strong> silver sound ;<br />

<strong>The</strong> glimmering blue o'er-bending <strong>the</strong>re<br />

Seemed with love's holiest circlet bound.<br />

All Nature is but outward Man<br />

;<br />

He hears alone <strong>the</strong> melodies<br />

Within his breast ;<br />

nor o<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

<strong>The</strong> beauty in his soul he sees.<br />

While she that by Ti-o-to stood<br />

Fair in <strong>the</strong> autumn's windy days,<br />

To pluck great 0-nust ripe <strong>and</strong> good,<br />

To pluck <strong>and</strong> strip <strong>the</strong> mighty Maize,<br />

As bli<strong>the</strong> <strong>and</strong> glad she came <strong>and</strong> went,<br />

Upon <strong>the</strong> lake<br />

<strong>and</strong> hushed her song<br />

Anon a yearning look she bent ;<br />

For brief delay to love is long.
