If warmer lit with feeling's grace<br />

His manly cheek, when to his gaze<br />

From far <strong>the</strong> beauteous maiden face<br />

Looked on him <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> growing maize<br />

What wonder he, though calm <strong>and</strong> wise,<br />

Should feel <strong>the</strong> old world dance <strong>and</strong> swim<br />

When on him bent those loveful eyes<br />

That, more than greeting, welcomed him. 33<br />

<strong>The</strong> while her sire <strong>the</strong> freedom gave<br />

Of waiting wigwam's mat <strong>and</strong> shade,<br />

As warrior brave to warrior brave,<br />

Apart <strong>and</strong> silent sat <strong>the</strong> maid ;<br />

Or lightly tripped unto <strong>the</strong> lake<br />

To bring him drink with willing feet,<br />

Or glad, when he his fast would break,<br />

She modest brought <strong>and</strong> gave him meat.<br />

He <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> bowl his thirst allayed,<br />

Nor with vain thanks did her address ;<br />

But sitting mute his hunger stayed,<br />

And rested <strong>of</strong> his weariness ;<br />

Till far <strong>and</strong> faint alone was heard<br />

<strong>The</strong> home-wind sighing through <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>The</strong> voice <strong>of</strong> night-awakened bird,<br />

And waves low-lapsing on <strong>the</strong> s<strong>and</strong>.
