The Hong Kong Polytechnic
University (PolyU)’s Industrial
Centre (IC) has joined hands
with Bosch Rexroth, one of the world’s
leading specialists in the field of drive
and control technologies for industrial
automation, to set up the German
company’s first Train the Trainer (TTT)
Centre in Greater China.
Both parties hailed this milestone at a
special ceremony held on 22 October
2010 on the university campus.
The Letter of Intent which marked
the collaboration was signed by Mr
Peter GORZYZA, Director of Bosch
Rexroth Drive and Control
Academy, Mr LAU Fo-wai,
General Manager of Bosch
Rexroth (China) Ltd, and Ir
Professor Alex WAI, PolyU
Vice President (Research
Development).
Addressing the ceremony,
Mr Peter GORZYZA,
Director of Bosch Rexroth
Drive and Control Academy,
said: “The PolyU is renowned for its
close relationship with industry. Its IC
also has rich experience in training the
trainers from the Chinese mainland. We
believe the setting up of a TTT Centre
at PolyU IC can benefit the higher
education sector, industry and the
community by elevating and enhancing
knowledge and skills in the application
of automation technology,”
The new TTT Centre at PolyU IC aims
to provide training for trainers from
other universities in China which have
established a Didactics partnership with
Bosch Rexroth.
Ir Professor Alex WAI welcomed this
initiative. “We are glad that Bosch
Rexroth has chosen us to be their
education partner to establish the first
and only TTT Centre for Industrial

Automation in Greater China. The
demand for automation technology is
expected to reach its peak as factories
on the Chinese mainland are all seeking
means to enhance their efficiency and
cost effectiveness. The TTT Centre will
have a great and important impact on
the industrial development of China,”
said Professor Wai.
At present more than 45 universities and
colleges all over China have already
established links with Bosch Rexroth in
different areas of training of industrial
applications. The TTT Centre at PolyU
IC will become a focal point for providing
train the trainer services to these
universities and colleges.
PolyU IC has enjoyed a fruitful
partnership with Bosch Rexroth with
their first collaboration being in 2007
when IC became Hong Kong’s first
“Bosch Rexroth Knowledge Partner”.
In 2009, Bosch Rexroth further offered
two scholarships each amounted to
RMB10,000 to IC trainees for three
consecutive years. Before the set up of a
TTT Centre, Bosch Rexroth also supplied
the PolyU IC with equipment in the areas
of drives and controls, pneumatics,
hydraulics and mechatronics.
Bosch Rexroth is one of the world’s
leading specialists in the field of drive and
control technologies. Under the brand
name of Rexroth the company supplies
more than 500,000 customers with
tailored solutions for driving, controlling
and moving. As The Drive & Control
Company, Bosch Rexroth develops,
produces and sells components and
systems in more than 80 countries in
the technology fields of Electric Drives
and Controls, Industrial Hydraulics,
Mobile Hydraulics, Linear Technology,
Assembly Technology and Pneumatics.

ÌÌTalk on High Performance Machining of Aerospace Alloys
ÌÌ 航 空 航 天 工 業 合 金 高 效 能 加 工 講 座
The IC recently invited Dr Sam
TURNER, Head of Process
Technology Group, Advanced
Manufacturing Research Centre
(AMRC) with Boeing, to pay a return
visit to the Centre in October. Dr Turner
also took the opportunity to deliver a
talk on High Performance Machining
of Aerospace Alloys to PolyU staff
members and students on 6 October
2010. Around 60 staff members and
students participated in the talk.
AMRC is working and partnering with
many global leaders particularly in
aerospace industry, including Boeing,
Rolls-Royce and Siemens. Dr Turner
has worked with the AMRC since
its foundation in 2001 on machining
technologies, growing the group to its
present 50 strong. Since then, Dr Turner
has undertaken research in machining
dynamics, titanium and nickel alloy
machining, machine tool adaptive
control, cutting tool design and machining
strategies. The research, sponsored
through EPSRC, TSB, EU FP6, FP7
and industry, has been recognised
in industry as delivering step change
technologies. Dr Turner has over 10
peer-reviewed journal and conference
papers on machining technology and
has extensive experience of applying
this research to industrial projects. He
uses this experience to focus on the
significant gaps within the current fields
of research that will have step change
impact on future production processes.
Dr Stephen O’BRIEN, Director of IC
and other senior members of the IC
visited AMRC in Sheffield, United
Kingdom in June 2010. Dr Turner was
invited to visit the Centre and explore
potential collaboration, particularly in the
aerospace industry.

AMRC 的 合 作 夥 伴 包 括 多 間 在 航 空
航 天 行 業 中 舉 足 輕 重 的 著 名 跨 國 機
構 , 例 如 波 音 、 勞 斯 萊 斯 、 西 門 子
等 。AMRC 於 2001 年 開 始 發 展 金 屬 切
削 及 加 工 技 術 的 研 究 , 在 Dr Turner 的
領 導 下 該 研 究 領 域 迅 速 發 展 , 並 取

Siemens Limited (Hong Kong)
to support its “Siemens Youth
Programme 2010” held from 15 to 31
July 2010. Around 20 students from
local secondary schools participated in
the programme.
Different activities such as presentation
talks on Siemens, skills developing
workshops and visits to Siemens’

ÌÌ 工 業 中 心 獲 撥 款 資 助 促 進 學 習 與 教 學 發 展 項 目
A
funding of around
HK$180,000 was recently
granted to the IC for the
successful application of its two learning
and teaching development projects
under the University’s Learning and
Teaching Development Projects 2009-12
Funding Scheme. The two projects are
namely “Expert System for Industrial
Processes Practice and Exploring
Multi-directional Knowledge” and
“Experience Sharing among Mentors
and Students in Integrative Learning”.
The two projects will last for one
year. As a grant recipient, the Project
Leader is expected to disseminate the
findings of the project and share with
other colleagues and departments the
deliverables and experience gained via
activities organized by the University.

進 學 習 與 教 學 發 展 項 目 。 兩 個 項 目

by integrating engineering and medical science.

It’s all about integration. After centuries
and centuries of development,
our knowledge in many traditional
disciplines has reached a level where
breakthroughs in individual disciplines
are becoming more and more difficult
to achieve. Yet, active and rapid
developments since the last century
were seen in one area – the integration
of disciplines. New developments and
breakthroughs have been achieved
by integrating the knowledge of two or
more traditional disciplines. Biomedical
engineering is one of these.
Biomedical engineering is a discipline
that encompasses both engineering
principles and human life science with
the aim of advancing and developing
knowledge in bioinstrumentation,
biomaterials, medical devices and
bioinformatics for the prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of disease,
for patient rehabilitation and to improve
health.
Health issue is one of the top concerns
of modern humans. The increasingly
aged population in our community
also creates a niche for biomedical
engineering. Ten years ago, the
Industrial Centre had already started
collaborating with various medical and
rehabilitation departments in PolyU and
other universities on their medical and
rehabilitation R & D activities, with our
knowledge and experience in industrial
engineering. Fruitful results were
achieved.

識 , 以 協 助 疾 病 的 預 防 、 診 斷 和 治
療 , 令 病 人 康 復 和 改 善 健 康 。
現 代 人 類 都 非 常 注 重 身 體 健 康 , 加
上 老 年 人 口 數 目 不 斷 增 加 , 令 生 物
醫 學 工 程 成 為 近 年 其 中 一 門 最 炙
手 可 熱 的 學 科 。 工 業 中 心 早 於 十 多
年 前 已 開 始 與 理 大 及 其 他 大 學 的 醫
學 、 醫 療 及 復 康 學 系 合 作 , 利 用 工
程 技 術 的 知 識 和 經 驗 配 合 學 系 的 科

A medical research funded by the
General Research Fund (GRF) on
continuous distraction osteogenesis
carried out by the Faculty of Dentistry
of the Hong Kong University (HKU)
has adopted an auto-driven distraction
system designed and made by PolyU’s
IC to aid the treatment course.
The widely accepted distraction rate for
intermittent distraction is around 1.0 mm/
day. Rapid distraction may delay bone
healing and cause injury. The research
project therefore aims at developing
and applying an auto-driven distraction
system incorporated with a memory
chip for continuous distraction
osteogenesis and assessing
the possibility of shortening the
treatment course. A rabbit model
of mandibular lengthening is taken
to evaluate the healing processes.

Distraction osteogenesis is a controlled
surgical procedure that initiates
a regenerative process and uses
mechanical strain to enhance the
biological responses of the injured
tissues to create new bone.

牽 引 成 骨 術 是 一 個 啟 動 再 生 的 手 術
過 程 , 在 一 段 長 時 間 中 以 機 械 拉 力
來 加 強 損 傷 組 織 的 生 物 反 應 以 製 造
新 骨 骼 組 織 。
The IC supported PolyU’s Department
of Health Technology and Informatics
(HTI) to develop a novel design of handfunctions
training robotic system for
stroke patients to actively recover their
hand functions. The system detects
the intention of hand opening or hand
closing from the stroke patient using
his/her muscle signals measured by
surface electromyography (EMG) from
the hemiplegic side. The sophisticated
device is made up of an embedded
controller and a robotic hand module.
It allows much flexibility as each finger
assembly can also be adjusted to fit for
different finger length. With the use of
this light and portable robotic device,
stroke patients can practice more easily
for the opening and closing of hands
at their own will, and handle functional
daily living tasks with ease.
The device not only provides the
user continuous active control using
electromyography (EMG) but also allows
the person to handle and feel real
objects with their own hand while
using the robotic system. It is also
very light and portable. The user
can carry the hand robot around
to achieve functional daily living

Different engineering processes such
as sheet metal, rapid prototyping, laser
cutting and CNC machining were applied
to verify the design and build the mock
up model.
The Exoskeleton Hand Robotic Training
Device was recently exhibited in the
InnoCarnival 2010 which was organised
by the Innovation and Technology
Commission and held at the Hong Kong
Science Park. In the 62 nd International
Trade Fair “Ideas – Inventions – New
Products” held in October 2010, at
Nuremberg in Germany, the Device was
awarded a gold medal. The judges were
of course highly impressed by the novel
design of the Device but the award also
shows that biomedical engineering
is one of the most popular areas of
development worldwide.

Biomedical Engineering in Hong Kong
生 物 醫 學 工 程 在 香 港 的 發 展
Most of us have heard a lot about
biomedical engineering. It is indeed one
of the most popular disciplines in Hong
Kong and around the world.
“Biomedical engineering is on a
spectacular fast-track development
path around the world,” said Professor
Raymond TONG, Principal Investigator
of the Exoskeleton Hand Robotic
Training Device.
Professor Tong is also the programme
leader of a bachelor degree in Biomedical
Engineering offered by HTI. “As the
geriatric population in Hong Kong and
around the world will increase steadily
in the coming decades, there will be a
high level of demand for biomedical
engineers,” said Professor Tong.
The IC has been collaborating with the
HTI for the past few years by offering
training activities to the Biomedical
Engineering degree students as well as
supporting its departmental research
projects. In 2006 and 2007, the Centre
supported HTI’s development of
PolyJbot Rehabilitation Robotic System.
The System also received a gold medal
in an invention expo held in 2007.
Professor Tong believes that IC’s
rich engineering experience can play
a role in supporting HTI’s research
projects, “IC staff with rich experience
in manufacturing can provide support
to Biomedical Engineers in visualizing
and developing a prototype for medical
devices, especially
in the mechanical
design in our joint
collaboration project
in rehabilitation
robotic system
for stroke neurorehabilitation.”
A
new project is
currently being
initiated by Professor
Tong and the IC will
again provide its
engineering support
to his project.

Training 培 訓 課 程
The IC offers training activities to the
students studying the Biomedical
Engineering degree programme at
PolyU. The training consists of 4 training
credits. Students have to go through
training in industrial safety, technical
communication & CAD, materials
processing and basic electronics. The
training is delivered via an integrative
engineering project. At the completion
of the training, students are expected
to accomplish a small project/product
by applying different technologies and
engineering practices. The last project
assigned to Year 1 students was to design
and make a prosthetic hand. Working
in a group of five to eight, students
have to learn different technologies
and skills from different workshops and
immediately apply what they have learnt
to the assigned project.
工 業 中 心 近 年 一 直 為 理 大 生 物 醫 學
工 程 學 生 提 供 培 訓 課 程 。 課 程 共 有
四 個 培 訓 學 分 。 培 訓 內 容 包 括 工 業

Course support 協 辦 課 程
In addition to providing industrial
engineering support to its research and
development projects, the IC has also
been supporting the Faculty of Dentistry
of the University of Hong Kong on its
various application training and sharing
platform in oral and maxillofacial surgery
for the past 10 years.
The Course was held over the period
of 26–28 June 2010 at the University
of Hong Kong. Around 50 practitioners
from Asia Pacific joined the course. A
series of didactic lectures and hands-on
workshops were included in the threeday
course.
The Centre has been adopting various
industrial engineering processes and
technologies, in particular the rapid
prototyping technology to assist in the
research and applications in oral and
maxillofacial surgery with fruitful results.
In 2005, the Centre also supported the
first AO Advanced Cranio-Maxillofacial
Course in the world organized by the
Faculty of Dentistry of the University of
Hong Kong.

Earlier this year, the IC was invited by
the Faculty of Dentistry of the University
of Hong Kong to serve as one of
the supporting organizations in its
AOCMF Course – Advances in Surgical
Navigation for Correction of Deformities.

Three Year 3 students from
the School of Mechanical
Engineering of the Beijing
Institute of Technology (BIT) undertook
a short training course offered by
the IC over the period of 26 July to 5
August 2010. The two-week training
was delivered as an integrative mode
of learning activity, adopting similar
training content and outcomes as those
set for PolyU’s Department of Industrial
& Systems Engineering (ISE) students.
The students were requested to go
through different technical workshops
to design and manufacture a Personal
Transportation Device.
Although the students had undertaken
some hands-on training during their
studies in BIT, the two-week intensive
and integrated training was not meant to
be easy for them. The original training
was designed for a group size of five to
eight but the BIT group had only three
students in total. As a result they had to
go through different workshops learning
the skills and technologies and shoulder
the loading originally designed for five to
eight students. Fortunately the students
were mature and all possessed a sound
background in engineering and therefore
could easily pick up the necessary skills
and techniques.
At the end of the training, they were
requested to make a short presentation
individually and demonstrate their

final product. The students were very
impressed by the training. They felt
that the training was well-organized,
well-coordinated and that the training
staff in the various workshops were all
very willing to help. The students were
encouraged to learn, ask and work. It
gave them an interactive and enriched
learning experience. A small regret was
that, according to them, there was a lack
of time and opportunity to communicate
with the local undergraduates.

照 工 業 中 心 為 理 大 工 業 及 系 統 工 程
學 系 學 生 提 供 的 培 訓 內 容 。 培 訓 採
用 綜 合 培 訓 模 式 進 行 。 學 生 以 小 組
合 作 形 式 , 透 過 完 成 特 定 的 目 標 或
任 務 , 接 受 不 同 技 術 工 場 的 技 術 培
訓 。 培 訓 的 內 容 及 其 先 後 次 序 則 取
決 於 該 特 定 的 目 標 或 任 務 所 需 的 流
程 及 工 序 。
儘 管 三 名 學 生 在 北 京 理 工 大 學 就 讀
時 曾 經 接 受 過 個 別 的 技 術 培 訓 , 但
短 短 兩 星 期 的 密 集 式 培 訓 課 程 對 他
們 來 說 也 不 是 容 易 應 付 的 , 因 為 原
來 的 培 訓 內 容 和 含 量 是 以 每 組 五 至
八 名 學 生 的 數 量 來 計 算 的 。 在 每 個
工 場 完 成 對 技 術 的 初 步 學 習 和 了 解
後 , 他 們 便 要 馬 上 分 工 合 作 完 成 原
本 設 計 給 五 至 八 名 學 生 的 工 作 量 。
幸 好 他 們 是 三 年 級 學 生 , 對 工 程 技
術 的 了 解 和 掌 握 較 快 較 成 熟 , 在 工
程 方 面 的 知 識 也 較 低 年 級 的 學 生 優
勝 。 所 以 即 使 時 間 非 常 緊 迫 , 學 生
仍 能 在 兩 週 內 完 成 指 定 的 目 標 。
兩 個 星 期 的 培 訓 轉 眼 便 過 去 。 學 生
在 培 訓 的 最 後 一 天 需 要 向 培 訓 導 師
介 紹 整 個 培 訓 過 程 和 成 果 。 三 名
學 生 表 示 , 非 常 珍 惜 是 次 來 港 培 訓
機 會 , 並 對 工 業 中 心 的 培 訓 印 象 難
忘 。 他 們 均 認 為 工 業 中 心 培 訓 安 排
有 序 , 工 場 的 培 訓 導 師 也 非 常 樂 意
協 助 。 培 訓 期 間 , 導 師 經 常 鼓 勵 他
們 發 問 和 學 習 , 他 們 對 這 種 極 為 互
動 的 學 習 氣 氛 尤 其 欣 賞 。 唯 一 的 遺
憾 是 由 於 時 間 緊 迫 , 他 們 未 能 有 更
多 時 間 與 香 港 的 學 生 溝 通 和 交 流 。

Champion team finds its way in
冠 軍 隊 伍 的 選 擇 RFID
The Millennium Entrepreneurship
Programme (MEP) organized by
Wofoo Social Enterprises and
supported by a number of organizations
including the IC was completed
successfully. After spending months in
researching and studying the relevant
topics, the impressive performance
of four teams successfully won them
a ticket to the MEP Final cum Prize
Presentation Ceremony held on 17 July
2010. In front of hundreds of participants
and supporters, the four teams made
their final and best presentations to the
judges competing for the championship.
The teams had taken the advice and
comments given by the first and second
round judges and further improved
their proposals and presentation.
The champion finally went to Valtorta
College’s ‘On Your Mark’ Proposal. In
addition to a cash prize, the champion
team was also awarded a study trip to
Shanghai Expo.
The proposals submitted by the final
four all incorporated ideas and concepts
related to technology. Two proposals,
including the champion’s, focused on
the use of RFID to improve quality of our
lives.
As one of the MEP supporting
organizations, the IC offered visits and
technical talks to the participants. Mr
CH Yu, Engineer of the IC also served
as one of the judges in the first round
judging.

希 望 能 擊 敗 其 餘 三 隊 , 成 為 終 極 冠
軍 。 在 首 階 段 及 次 階 段 的 評 審 過 程
中 , 各 評 判 都 給 予 了 所 有 參 賽 隊 伍
寶 貴 的 意 見 , 四 強 隊 伍 亦 參 考 和 接
納 了 評 判 的 意 見 , 並 對 計 劃 書 作 出
適 當 的 修 改 、 增 補 和 刪 減 。 經 過 精
采 的 介 紹 和 答 辯 後 , 評 判 最 終 選 出
恩 主 教 書 院 參 賽 隊 伍 的 「On Your
Mark」 計 劃 為 冠 軍 得 主 。 冠 軍 隊 伍
除 可 獲 得 現 金 獎 和 證 書 外 , 更 獲 大
會 安 排 參 加 上 海 世 博 遊 學 之 旅 , 增
廣 見 聞 。
四 強 隊 伍 的 計 劃 項 目 內 容 均 加 入 了
科 技 及 創 意 元 素 , 其 中 兩 隊 隊 伍 的
計 劃 項 目 ( 包 括 冠 軍 得 主 ) 更 不 約 而
同 地 構 思 應 用 無 線 電 射 頻 識 別 技 術
(RFID) 於 不 同 產 品 中 來 改 善 人 類 生 活
質 素 。
工 業 中 心 為 計 劃 的 支 持 機 構 之 一 ,
早 前 為 參 賽 隊 伍 提 供 了 專 題 講 座 及
參 觀 活 動 。 工 業 中 心 工 程 師 余 俊 濠
先 生 更 獲 大 會 邀 請 作 為 首 階 段 的 評
判 之 一 。

工 業 中 心 與 高 職 院 校 之 交 流 合 作
今 年 暑 假 , 工 業 中 心 與 武 漢 船 舶 職
業 技 術 學 院 聯 合 舉 辦 《 湖 北 省 高 職
院 校 骨 幹 教 師 和 管 理 人 員 培 訓 班 》
, 參 加 今 次 研 修 班 的 學 員 合 共 77
人 , 分 別 來 自 湖 北 省 19 所 高 職 院
校 。 他 們 主 要 是 各 高 職 院 校 的 領
導 、 系 主 任 、 專 業 帶 頭 人 、 骨 幹 教
師 、 師 資 及 教 學 管 理 幹 事 等 。 即 使
整 個 研 修 班 的 時 間 很 短 , 課 程 卻 安
排 得 很 緊 湊 , 而 參 加 培 訓 的 學 員 均
表 示 感 觸 良 多 , 認 為 今 次 的 培 訓 十
分 有 意 義 , 不 但 學 到 了 先 進 的 職 業
教 育 理 念 和 教 學 方 法 , 更 拓 寬 了 他
們 自 身 對 課 程 開 發 及 專 業 建 設 的 思
路 。 學 員 更 表 示 會 將 學 習 成 果 、 教
學 手 段 與 校 內 其 他 教 師 分 享 , 促 進
其 學 院 的 整 體 發 展 。 除 武 漢 船 舶 職
業 技 術 學 院 外 , 內 蒙 古 建 築 職 業 技
術 學 院 及 湖 北 城 巿 建 設 職 業 技 術 學
院 亦 相 繼 派 員 前 往 我 中 心 參 加 師 資
培 訓 , 並 給 予 培 訓 班 高 度 評 價 。
工 業 中 心 除 了 為 個 別 院 校 提 供 培 訓
服 務 外 , 亦 多 次 與 教 育 部 新 世 紀 教
學 研 究 所 及 香 港 職 業 訓 練 局 合 作 ,
舉 辦 高 職 課 程 開 發 與 資 源 建 設 骨 幹

雕 刻 師
黃 老 師 博 客
最 近 在 整 理 資 料 時 無 意 中 看 到 兩 年 多 前 有 感
而 發 所 寫 的 一 篇 短 文 , 名 為 《 雕 刻 師 》。 誘
發 寫 這 篇 短 文 的 原 因 是 當 時 遇 到 一 些 教 師 埋
怨 其 學 生 素 質 差 、 能 力 差 , 甚 至 稱 其 學 生 無
可 救 藥 , 並 表 示 花 時 間 在 這 類 學 生 身 上 等 於
浪 費 生 命 等 等 。 這 些 教 師 對 於 需 要 面 對 這 類
學 生 感 覺 非 常 懊 惱 及 委 屈 , 仿 佛 自 己 當 上 教
師 便 頃 刻 間 成 為 社 會 上 的 受 害 人 似 的 。
現 把 《 雕 刻 師 》 一 文 與 各 位 分 享 , 歡 迎 賜
教 。
雕 刻 師
若 以 雕 刻 師 來 比 喻 老 師 , 那 麼 學 生 剛 踏 進 校 園 時 就 是 雕 刻 用 的
「 原 材 料 」, 學 生 畢 業 時 就 是 老 師 的 「 雕 刻 作 品 」。
曾 在 中 央 電 視 台 節 目 中 看 到 記 者 訪 問 一 位 被 形 容 為 「 國 寶 級 」
的 雕 刻 大 師 , 該 雕 刻 大 師 說 :「 只 要 雕 刻 師 有 一 定 的 雕 刻 水
平 、 全 身 心 投 入 的 工 作 態 度 、 具 備 永 不 放 棄 的 精 神 , 不 要 說 玉
石 、 木 頭 、 雞 蛋 、 米 粒 等 原 材 料 , 即 使 使 用 普 通 的 泥 土 , 只 要
懂 得 細 心 加 工 , 也 可 以 雕 刻 出 世 界 級 的 雕 刻 作 品 !」。
該 大 師 續 說 :「 有 些 雕 刻 師 的 雕 刻 作 品 不 被 認 可 的 時 候 , 便 埋
怨 雕 刻 用 的 原 材 料 不 行 。 不 要 找 藉 口 說 原 材 料 不 行 , 關 鍵 是 雕
刻 師 有 否 能 力 化 腐 朽 為 神 奇 !」
在 電 視 上 看 到 大 師 的 不 同 作 品 時 , 驚 歎 大 師 所 言 不 虛 。 看 他 從
路 邊 收 集 一 些 普 通 泥 土 , 經 過 細 心 的 加 工 及 烘 乾 , 然 後 細 緻 地
一 刀 一 刀 就 把 一 件 藝 術 品 完 成 並 呈 現 眼 前 。
確 實 , 學 校 裏 的 老 師 就 是 雕 刻 師 , 老 師 所 雕 刻 的 作 品 就 是 學
生 !
要 成 為 一 位 稱 職 教 師 確 實 並 不 容 易 , 因 稱 職 教 師 應 具 備 以 下 條

放 棄 , 仍 不 斷 想 方 設 法 醫 治 好 這 些 病 人 。 試 想 , 假 如 某 醫 生 只 會 抱 怨 病 人 的 病 況 怎 樣 不 好 ,
而 不 花 心 思 及 努 力 去 把 病 人 醫 治 , 我 們 會 怎 樣 看 待 及 評 價 該 醫 生 呢 ?
不 管 病 人 的 病 情 多 差 , 醫 生 的 職 責 就 是 想 方 設 法 把 病 人 醫 好 ; 不 管 學 生 的 素 質 多 差 , 教 師 的
職 責 就 是 想 方 設 法 把 學 生 教 好 !

hour pedal kart challenge
小 時 腳 踏 車 比 賽 的 挑 戰
In mid-November a group of IC
staff members and PolyU students
participated in a really challenging
and demanding event - Hong Kong
24-Hour Charity Pedal Kart Grand Prix
organized by the Hong Kong Round
Table. A total of 33 teams including the
IC joined the race held on 20 and 21
November at Victoria Park, Hong Kong.
The Pedal Grand Prix is a 24-hour
race comprising a number of classes of
kart. Each participating team pedals in
relays for 24 hours and is responsible
for raising funds for charities. Teams
from Hong Kong’s biggest companies,
schools, associations and institutions
compete with each other for a range
of prizes including most money raised,
best turned out kart, engineering
excellence, best all-around kart, most
number of laps and so on. The race is
not just a big challenge to the pedalling
participants, as each participating
team has to bring their own pedal
kart which has to comply fully with the
requirements set by the organiser. As
a backup measure, each participating
team also has its own support team to
provide all necessary technical support
for the pedal kart in case of a breakdown
or other accidents.
This year, for the first time, around 30
IC staff members and PolyU students
formed an IC team and pedalled in
relays for 24 hours, on a pedal kart
designed and built by IC staff members.
The team strived hard and finished 26th
out of 33 in the race without breaking
down the kart (a few karts broke down
in the middle of the race) and even
achieved the 7 th fastest lap in the overall
competition.

由 香 港 圓 桌 會 主 辦 的 香 港 24 小 時 慈
善 腳 踏 車 格 蘭 披 治 大 賽 。 比 賽 於 11
月 20 至 21 日 假 香 港 維 多 利 亞 公 園 足
球 場 舉 行 , 合 共 33 支 隊 伍 參 加 。
香 港 24 小 時 慈 善 腳 踏 車 格 蘭 披 治 大
賽 是 一 項 集 不 同 種 類 車 組 的 24 小 時
接 力 賽 。 每 支 參 賽 隊 伍 的 隊 員 需 要
輪 流 接 力 以 腳 踏 車 比 賽 , 而 籌 得 的
款 項 將 會 交 予 圓 桌 會 作 慈 善 用 途 。
參 賽 隊 伍 包 括 來 自 本 地 大 型 企 業 、
學 校 、 團 體 機 構 等 , 爭 奪 各 個 獎 項
例 如 最 高 籌 款 額 、 最 佳 外 型 設 計 、
最 佳 機 械 設 計 、 全 能 賽 車 、 最 長 行
駛 距 離 等 等 。 這 個 比 賽 固 然 是 對 腳
踏 車 手 的 一 個 極 大 的 考 驗 , 不 過 真
正 考 驗 的 還 包 括 參 賽 隊 伍 的 後 勤 和
支 援 。 每 隊 隊 伍 需 要 自 備 合 符 大 會
規 格 的 腳 踏 車 參 賽 , 而 由 於 比 賽 過
程 中 隨 時 會 發 生 機 械 故 障 , 甚 至 意
外 , 因 此 具 備 充 足 、 全 面 及 快 速 的
後 勤 機 械 支 援 及 維 修 隊 伍 亦 是 勝 負
的 關 鍵 。
由 30 名 工 業 中 心 教 職 員 及 理 大 學 生
組 成 的 隊 伍 參 加 了 今 屆 腳 踏 車 格 蘭
披 治 大 賽 。 參 賽 的 腳 踏 車 由 工 業 中
心 設 計 及 製 造 。 工 業 中 心 在 33 支 參
賽 隊 伍 中 以 第 26 名 完 成 比 賽 , 而 工
業 中 心 比 賽 使 用 的 腳 踏 車 亦 僥 倖 地
沒 有 損 壞 或 發 生 故 障 ( 部 分 參 賽 隊 伍
的 腳 踏 車 在 中 途 發 生 了 故 障 或 意 外 )
。 工 業 中 心 其 中 一 名 參 賽 隊 員 更 做

The 24-hour race started at 3.00pm on Saturday
and ended at 3.00pm on Sunday. It was a really
big challenge for the team members. It was also a
good opportunity to enjoy the day and night scenes
of Victoria Park - if he/she was not too tired! 24 小 時
腳 踏 車 比 賽 由 星 期 六 下 午 三 時 開 始 , 至 翌 日 即 星
期 日 下 午 三 時 結 束 , 對 參 賽 隊 員 是 一 個 極 大 的 挑
戰 。 若 參 賽 者 不 感 到 疲 倦 , 這 也 是 一 個 好 機 會 去
細 意 欣 賞 一 下 維 多 利 亞 公 園 日 與 夜 的 風 光 。

After years of contribution, four IC staff retired
from their posts in 2010. Some of them started
to work at the IC since its establishment in
1976. On their last day of service, Dr Stephen
O’BRIEN, Director of Industrial Centre together
with IC staff members bade
them sincere farewells
and wished them a happy
retirement. 四 位 工 業 中 心 同

年 正 式 踏 入 退 休 生 活 。 其
