This is our chance to show you what life<br />

This short talk will introduce you to and guide<br />

you through our accommodation provision in<br />

Cambridge. You will find out how to apply for<br />

accommodation, how much it costs and much,<br />

Student Life Talk<br />

Times: 11.30am, repeated at 1.30pm<br />

Location: Mumford Theatre, Mumford Building<br />

The Students’ Union plays a vital role during<br />

your time studying at university and in more<br />

ways than you might typically think. This talk,<br />

by members <strong>of</strong> the Students’ Union Executive,<br />

will highlight the key areas <strong>of</strong> support <strong>of</strong>fered by<br />

the Students’ Union. This includes the different<br />

sports clubs and societies with which you can<br />

get involved, the Gymnasium, bars, club nights<br />

and live music events as well as the education<br />

and welfare support services. The <strong>of</strong>ficer will<br />

also outline the various Sports Scholarships and<br />

the Centre <strong>of</strong> Cricketing Excellence (UCCE).<br />

Finance Talk<br />

Finance is an important area to consider when<br />

Student Ambassadors are available throughout<br />

the day to take you on a guided tour <strong>of</strong> our<br />

Cambridge Campus. These walking Campus<br />

Tours will cover the whole Campus so that<br />

you can really start to find your bearings and<br />

get a feel for the <strong>University</strong>. This is also a<br />

fantastic opportunity for you to chat to our<br />

Student Ambassadors and find out what it’s<br />

really like to live and learn at our <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Bus Tours<br />

Bus stop: Outside Helmore Building on East<br />

Road – Look out for the Bus Stop!<br />

Why not experience Cambridge and see<br />

what it has to <strong>of</strong>fer by taking a free 45 minute<br />

open top bus tour, provided by City Sightseeing.<br />

The bus takes you on a round trip to all the<br />

sites, ranging from the historic city centre to<br />

all the best places to shop.<br />

Accommodation Tours<br />

with the last tour departing at 2.45pm<br />

Guided tours are available to both <strong>of</strong> our oncampus<br />

Halls <strong>of</strong> Residence, Swinhoe House and<br />

Peter Taylor House. You'll have the opportunity<br />

to take a look at both a standard bedroom and<br />

an en-suite bedroom. Please see page 26 for<br />

<strong>University</strong> Library Tours<br />

Departure times: 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm<br />

Location: Library, Mumford Building<br />

The tour <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Library leaves every<br />

hour on the hour and takes in all the facilities<br />

that we have to <strong>of</strong>fer. These include: computing,<br />

photocopying and audio-visual. The tour also<br />

introduces you to the Digital Library and to<br />

all the different types <strong>of</strong> stock including books,<br />

journals, CDs, DVDs and videos. See page 22<br />

for further details on the <strong>University</strong> Library.<br />

the Cambridge School <strong>of</strong> Art it is recommended<br />

that you go directly to the <strong>Ruskin</strong> Gallery at<br />

10am or 12pm, rather than to the <strong>Faculty</strong>’s<br />

reception area. If you have any problems, you<br />

are welcome to visit our reception area in the<br />

Helmore Building.<br />

Exhibition and Gallery<br />

Take a look at the gallery exhibition whilst<br />

getting a feel for the space which is at the heart<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Cambridge School <strong>of</strong> Art. Staff will direct<br />

Art, Design or Media subject at our <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Photography<br />

Visit the photography darkrooms and workspaces<br />

and have an introduction by staff to the kinds <strong>of</strong><br />

opportunities there are to study photography at<br />

the Cambridge School <strong>of</strong> Art.<br />

3D Design<br />

Visit the workshops used for 3D design<br />

An opportunity to view the spaces where work<br />

Take a look at the digital suites available to<br />

you as a student if you become a student at the<br />

Printmaking<br />

Look around the nationally renowned printmaking<br />

facilities and talk to staff about the possibilities<br />

<strong>of</strong> using these spaces for your studies on a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> courses wihin the Cambridge School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Art.<br />

Computer Games Design and Visual Effects<br />

Visit the suite where Computer Games Design<br />

and Visual Effects are studied, meet the courses<br />

leader and sample the s<strong>of</strong>tware.<br />

Film and Television<br />

This is an opportunity for anyone interested in<br />

television and film to view the studios and hear<br />

about the resources and projects that would<br />

form a part <strong>of</strong> your course work. There are a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> combinations <strong>of</strong> courses where you<br />

get the opportunity to film, edit and design for<br />

the moving image.<br />

Illustration Studios<br />

Time: 11.40am, repeated at 1.40pm<br />

Location: <strong>Ruskin</strong> 208<br />

A chance to look around the original <strong>Ruskin</strong><br />

Studios and talk to staff about all aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

illustration. You will be able to view some<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> students’ work, from drawing and<br />

books to traditional and digital animation.<br />

Communication, Film and Media<br />

A member <strong>of</strong> academic staff will be present<br />

throughout the day for drop-in sessions <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

advice and answering questions. Normally a<br />

current student will also be present to answer<br />

your questions and provide an insight into life<br />

as a student on one <strong>of</strong> these courses at<br />

<strong>Anglia</strong> <strong>Ruskin</strong>.<br />

Tour <strong>of</strong> Communication, Film and Media<br />

Production Facilities<br />

Time: 11am repeated at 1.30pm<br />

A tour with staff and current students <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Production Facilities that are available for film,<br />

video, animation, radio and the internet.<br />

Humanities and Social Sciences<br />

Criminology, History, Philosophy, Psychosocial<br />

Studies, Public Service and Sociology<br />

There will be a variety <strong>of</strong> activities in the above<br />

subject areas. Please visit our reception area in<br />

the Helmore Building (Hel251) for full details.<br />

The following is an example <strong>of</strong> the type <strong>of</strong> activities<br />

which will be available for you to participate in<br />

Fancy a Heated Debate? Not Sure What You<br />

Think? Come and Find Out!<br />

Time: 12.30pm<br />

The Social Sciences, comprising Criminology,<br />

Psychosocial Studies, Public Service and<br />

Sociology, encompass a wide range <strong>of</strong> interesting,<br />

contemporary and thought-provoking topics that<br />

fuel discussions and debates throughout the<br />

degree course. This is a taster debate, on a<br />

‘hot topic’. The debate will begin with a general<br />

overview <strong>of</strong> the Social Sciences, and a short<br />

presentation about a topical issue, such as<br />

‘Murder and its Consequences’, ‘War Crimes and<br />

Propaganda’, ‘Surveillance and Society’ or<br />

‘Enforcers and Public Obedience’. The session<br />

will provide you with a snapshot <strong>of</strong> a typical<br />

undergraduate experience in the Social Sciences.<br />

English and Writing<br />

A member <strong>of</strong> academic staff will be present<br />

throughout the day for drop-in sessions <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

advice and answering questions. Normally a<br />

current student will also be present to answer<br />

questions and provide an insight into life as a<br />

student on an English or Writing course at<br />

<strong>Anglia</strong> <strong>Ruskin</strong>.<br />

Presentation: ‘The English and Writing<br />

Programmes’<br />

Time: 12pm repeated at 2pm<br />

A presentation about what it is like to study<br />

English and/or Writing at our <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Languages and Intercultural<br />

Communication<br />

Throughout the day come and discuss course<br />

options with Department staff and sample the<br />

multimedia language laboratories and self-access<br />

Language Centre.<br />

Law<br />

A member <strong>of</strong> academic staff will be present<br />

between 10am to 3pm for drop-in sessions <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

advice and answering questions. Normally a<br />

current student will also be present to answer<br />

questions and provide an insight into life as a<br />

law student at <strong>Anglia</strong> <strong>Ruskin</strong>. There will be a<br />

presentation (repeated regularly throughout the<br />

day) outlining:<br />

highlighting the distinctive features <strong>of</strong><br />

our courses<br />

Music and Performing Arts<br />

Presentation: ‘Introduction to the BA Music and<br />

BA Creative Music Technology Courses’<br />

Time: 10.30am, repeated at 12.30pm<br />

Location: Recital Hall<br />

A presentation by members <strong>of</strong> academic staff<br />

and the chance to chat with current students<br />

about our courses. This talk will include information<br />

about course structures, performance activities,<br />

and teaching methods. There will also be<br />

opportunities to ask questions and speak<br />

with staff on a one-to-one basis.<br />

Tour <strong>of</strong> Music and Creative Music<br />

Technology Facilities<br />

Throughout the Open Day staff and students<br />

will be available to show you the Department’s<br />

facilities, including the practice and teaching<br />

spaces, Recital Hall, Computer Music Studios,<br />

Music Library and the Mumford Theatre.<br />

An open session where you can hear examples<br />

<strong>of</strong> student compositions in our state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art<br />

Computer Music Studios. The session will also<br />

Forensic Science at <strong>Anglia</strong> <strong>Ruskin</strong> provides the<br />

opportunity for you to tour the entire Forensic<br />

Science complex, from examining the work<br />

undertaken in the Crime Scene through the<br />

different analytical laboratories, looking at<br />

machinery such as the GCMS (Gas Chromatography<br />

Mass Spectrometer) the ICP, FTIR and Raman<br />

and varying types <strong>of</strong> microscopes, including the<br />

electro scanning microscope. The tour concludes<br />

with a talk outlining the Forensic Science<br />

Degree and provides the opportunity for you<br />

The Human Energetics and Performance Centre<br />

Admissions<br />

A member <strong>of</strong> the Admissions Unit will be<br />

available to provide advice and guidance on<br />

all aspects <strong>of</strong> our full- and part-time admissions<br />

processes, including how to make an application<br />

for one <strong>of</strong> our courses and our entry requirements.<br />

Careers Advice<br />

Careers Advisers are available to help you<br />

make informed decisions on course choice;<br />

entry requirements; postgraduate study and<br />

graduate careers and other options. In particular,<br />

if you have been out <strong>of</strong> education for a while<br />

and want to discuss the implications <strong>of</strong> returning<br />

to study, come along and talk to our Careers<br />

staff about a pre-entry guidance appointment.<br />

International Student Advice<br />

Time: 11am to 2pm<br />

The International Office can provide information<br />

and advice to students who come from outside<br />

the UK on entry qualifications, tuition fees,<br />

social activities and application procedures.<br />

In addition we can advise on any visa requirements<br />

for those students who are not EEA nationals.<br />

Learning Support Advice<br />

The Learning Support and Disbaility Resources<br />

Team provides services, support and advice<br />

for students with a disability, specific learning<br />

difficulty (e.g. dyslexia) or medical condition,<br />

as well as study skills for all students.<br />

Advisers from our Team are available to discuss<br />

your circumstances and how we can support<br />

you both as an applicant and as a student. You<br />

can talk through any concerns you may have<br />

about overcoming barriers to study in Higher<br />

<strong>Education</strong> as well as find out about our learning<br />

support and disability resources.<br />

Financial Advice<br />

Members <strong>of</strong> our Financial Aid & Advice team<br />

are available to give advice and information<br />

on all aspects <strong>of</strong> student funding, including<br />

entitlement to loans and grants and funding<br />

for tuition fees for both UK and EU students.<br />

Banks<br />

Advisers from several local banks will be on<br />

hand to talk to you about opening a Student<br />

Bank Account.<br />

Car Parking<br />

Car parking is not available on Campus.<br />

Trains<br />

Trains to Cambridge leave from London<br />

Kings Cross or London Liverpool Street.<br />

Cambridge train station is about half a<br />

mile from the campus.<br />

City Centre<br />

The Grafton Centre and the City Centre are<br />

only a 10 minute walk away where you will<br />

find a variety <strong>of</strong> places to eat and drink.<br />

page 30 <strong>of</strong> this Guide.<br />

Fire Alarm<br />

If the fire alarm sounds please remain calm<br />

and head for the nearest exit. Assembly points<br />

are clearly signposted.<br />

Feedback<br />

During your day one <strong>of</strong> our Student Ambassadors<br />

will hand you an Open Day Questionnaire, we<br />

would be most grateful if you could spare five<br />

minutes to fill this in as it will help us to ensure<br />

that we make future Open Days as useful as<br />

possible. As an added incentive for you to share<br />

your views with us you could be in with the<br />

chance to win £50 <strong>of</strong> High Street vouchers.<br />

Simply drop your completed questionnaire into<br />

the feedback box and a winner will be selected<br />

at random the following Monday. If you are a<br />

winner we will notify you in writing.<br />

First Aid<br />

First aid is available from St John Ambulance,<br />

if you require assistance please ask one <strong>of</strong> our<br />

Student Ambassadors.<br />

Lost People/Property<br />

If you are unfortunate enough to lose a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> your party or an item <strong>of</strong> your property please<br />

go to the main reception area and request<br />

assistance from a Student Ambassador.<br />

Refreshments<br />

FREE tea and c<strong>of</strong>fee is available from the<br />

Refectory in the Helmore Building, as well<br />

as hot and cold food for you to purchase.<br />

The Students’ Union bar is open from 11am,<br />

serving a selection <strong>of</strong> beverages for you to<br />

purchase.<br />
