Returns from Iraq 

At the regular meeting of the 

Norwalk City Council on December 

19, the Council Members honored 

Joseph Wayne Thomas who recently 

returned from Iraq. 

Joseph was in Iraq for one year 

and served as a machine gunner on a 

Hum-V. He is an E-4 Specialist with 

the Screaming Eagles of the 101st 

Airborne Division assigned to Delta 

Company. 

Joseph was asked to attend the 

Council meeting so the community 

could personally thank him for the 

many personal sacrifices he has made 

to keep all of us safe.

Joseph and his family.

Visible Property Address Numbers 

Properly posted address numbers are important tools for emergency 

personnel when responding to fire and life safety emergencies. The Building 

Code, the Fire Code and the Norwalk Municipal Code also require them. 

Even though the City of Norwalk coordinates the painting of address 

numbers on the curb in front of each dwelling every two years, this is not a 

replacement for having the address properly posted on the building itself. 

According to the Norwalk Municipal Code, buildings must be provided 

with plainly visible and legible address numbers posted on the building 

so that the building may be identified by emergency services such as fire, 

sheriff, and medical staff. “Emergency services personnel need to identify 

the location they are attempting to find without going through a lengthy 

search procedure, as every second added to their response time puts life and property at risk,” said Norwalk’s Building & Safety 

Manager Tony Weimholt. 

As a helpful hint, residents can check that their address numbers are properly installed when taking down their Christmas 

lighting. Street numbers are required to be at least three-inch high letters and contrast with their background so that they are readily 

visible from the street. The numbers should also be located in the immediate area of the main door or entrance to the building.

The Quilt Makers of Norwalk Senior Center 

Every year, once a week for three hours, Helen Duornberger, 

Gloria Lorenzo, Lupe Gilez, Lee Nonettei, Marjorie James, and 

Betty Ledesman get together at the Norwalk Senior Center 

to make quilts that will be donated to nursing homes and 

convalescent homes throughout Norwalk. The quilts are all hand 

made, crocheted and sown to perfection. All materials used to 

make the quilts are donated to the Senior Center from the public 

through out the year. 

These ladies have been making quilts for ten years. Before 

them, Flora Guttman made the quilts for 17 years. Flora has 

passed away but her tradition will carry on. For nearly 3 decades, 

these quilts have provided a great deal of comfort and warmth 

for Norwalk residents in convalescent and nursing homes. 100-110 quilts will be donated this year alone. If you would like to 

participate in making these quilts or donating materials please contact the Norwalk Senior Center at (562) 929-5580. These ladies 

look forward to your help.

Don Schoendorfer Selected Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast Keynote and 

Former Baseball Star Darrell Jackson Named Testimonial Speaker 

Don Schoendorfer is a biomedical engineer and founder of the Free Wheelchair Mission. He has an 

undergraduate degree from Columbia University and holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. A 

leading pioneer in practical transdermal diagnostics and blood cell separation technologies, he holds over 50 

medical technology Patents. 

About five years ago Don focused his engineering talents to solving the problem of immobility in developing 

nations. There are over 100 million disabled adults and children in Third World Countries. The causes of disability 

range from diseases that have been eradicated in Western countries, to injuries from land mines and war. For 

many of these people, medical aid is not available, and adaptive equipment is even harder to come by. 

Don’s solution was to develop a $44.40 USD, mass-produced wheelchair, made of a resin lawn chair, metal 

tubing, and bicycle tires. 

His non-profit organization, The Free Wheelchair Mission, has been featured in the LA Times Magazine, 

People Magazine, Orange County Register and numerous Christian publications. In 2003, The Free Wheelchair 

Mission allocated approximately 91% of its revenues to the manufacture and distribution of wheelchairs. 

Testimonial Speaker for the 2007 Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is former Minnesota Twins pitcher Darrell Jackson. Jackson was also a member 

of an Arizona State University National Championship team. He was born and raised in Los Angeles and attended Locke High School. Two of his teammates included 

Baseball Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith and Eddie Murray. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1977, and pitched a no-hitter in his pro-debut. He was called up to the 

majors after only 10 weeks in the minor leagues. Unfortunately, his career ended in 1983 due to a shoulder injury. 

In 1987 he returned to school and attended Cal State Long Beach. Since 1988, he has been a strong supporter of Red Ribbon Week and a motivational speaker that 

has addressed thousands of students and adults about a drug-free lifestyle. He founded the 10-20 Club that assists youth with alcohol, drug, and anger management issues. 

Darrell is also the current president of Gangs out of Downey, (G.O.O.D.), and a lifetime member of the Major League Baseball Player Alumni Association. He has received 

the YMCA’s Martin Luther King Human Dignity award, the Sertoma’s Service to Mankind award and the California’s PTA Volunteer award. 

Darrell Jackson is married to Veronica Jackson and has a beautiful 18-month-old daughter named Yuko Jackson. They are all residents of La Habra. 

The 2007 Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, 2007, from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. The breakfast will be hosted in the main dining room of the

The last day to register to vote in the City’s general municipal election to be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 is Monday, February 19, 2007. Voter registration forms 

may be obtained in the City Clerk’s Office, Norwalk City Hall, 12700 Norwalk Boulevard 90650, by calling the City Clerk’s Office at (562) 929-5720, or at the Los 

Angeles Country Registrar-Recorder’s Office located at 12400 Imperial Highway, Norwalk. 

In recognition of President’s Day, Norwalk City Hall will be closed on February 19, 2007, so plan ahead to register before the deadline date.

90-Day Limit 

on Lights 

Annually residents 

celebrate the holiday 

season by decorating their 

homes with outdoor lights. 

Although they beautify 

homes for the holidays, 

these temporary lights 

pose a potential fire danger 

when left out all year. 

Residents should be 

aware these lights may 

only be displayed for a 

maximum of 90 days. The 

purpose being to eliminate 

the number of homes 

leaving their holiday 

lights up year-round or 

for extended period. 

Violations of the 

Electrical Code can result 

in fines of up to $1,000 

and/or six months in 

jail. The City’s property 

maintenance and building 

inspectors will enforce this 

code requirement. 

Home & Business Beautification Contest Information 

The City of Norwalk Community Promotion Commission is inviting all residents 

and businesses to participate in the 2007 Home and Business Beautification Contest. 

The city will be divided into four areas for judging purposes, which means more winners 

and more fun. Judging criteria for each of the categories is as follows: 

· Home Beautiful – Creativity and neighborhood impact, overall general appearance, maintenance, and use 

of landscaping. 

· Multi-Family Dwellings – The Multi-family awards will be for residential units that exhibit excellence in 

maintenance and upkeep. Multi-family unit winners will be selected citywide. Owners, tenants, or neighbors, 

may make contest nominations. 

· Home Improvement – Painting, landscaping, driveway repairs, garage doors, awnings, and additions. 

· Business Beautification Awards – General appearance, maintenance, use of landscaping, neighborhood 

impact, and creativity. 

The contest deadline is April 20. For an application, please contact the Community Information Office
